Why LAN is Excluded from Starcraft 2
Posted by Lasse "Get.Enron" Engen 2 years ago
It was recently announced that Blizzard will not include the LAN function for the upcoming sequel, Starcraft 2. Many fans are very upset, but Blizzard's community manager, Karune, explains their decision in the BlizzBlues forums.
[updated with more comments]
Many fans got upset when they heard the news on Monday - No LAN in Starcraft 2! The questions started pumping out, how can they remove such a great function? How will we be able to play multiplayer in Starcraft 2 if the internet would break down? Well Karune, Blizzard's own community manager, answered a batch of questions from the users over at the BlizzBlues forums in an attempt to clear things up.
"We would not remove the LAN function if we couldn't offer the players something better."
Karune further explains that the Battle.net 2.0 will improve our experiences online, and that it will solve a lot of problems. Exactly how is not known to this date, but it will be explained when it's time for Blizzard to update us on the new Battle.net 2.0.
Blizzard's view on piracy servers such as ICCUP is also mentioned, and is worth looking into. Karune also reminds the community to "support the causes you believe in (This is applicable to all things, not just gaming). Don’t be a leech to society, innovation, and further awesome creations."
Here are all of the questions and answers from the BlizzBlues forums so far:
User comment: I think the reasons starcraft has lasted so long as a game and community are because: 1) Well designed and fun to play game. 2) Free battle.net - Having a place where gamers can come together and play the game 24/7 helps to foster a bolster and lively community. 3) Continued support for the game even after 11 years, they still patch it when it needs a patch. 4) Pro-Starcraft gaming. This is a big deal to serious starcraft players or to anyone that enjoys competition. These games are fun to watch and makes casual players want to play the game. 5) Lan support. - Lan parties are fun. If you take away LAN support you will still have the 4 other pillars for a strong starcraft community. Plus if LAN support helps rid battle.net of hackers, cheaters and piracy because the network traffic is harder to decipher then all the better. That only strengthens the spirit of fair competition on battle.net. Karune's reply: The first 4 pillars are ALL being made better. 1) Development time for StarCraft II have far exceeded the original StarCraft in both the standard of quality and duration, to ensure the highest in quality RTS experience we can possibly create. 2) Not only is it free to play online for people who purchase the game, Battle.net 2.0 is designed with the new generation of online community and eSports in mind. 3) As long as there are people playing our games, we will continue to support them, and we have continued with this tradition with our legacy titles like the original StarCraft. 4) StarCraft II was created with eSports as a cornerstone in design philosophy. StarCraft evolved into an eSport. 5) Map Editor will be better than any we have ever released. and: 6) ??? - will have to wait and see :) For me personally- I loved LAN parties, but the direction in which Battle.net is headed, I would always choose to play on Battle.net > 99% of the time and even if for whatever reason I did decide to lug my computer to a friend's house in this day of age (<1%), I would still be playing with them on Battle.net against others at their place. User comment: That's his point. Even if you do lug your "beast" around, he is saying that battle.net will clearly have better abilities than regular LAN. I for one have full faith in Blizzard, and though I do disagree with taking LAN out as a whole, I do feel that in the end whatever they provide as an alternative will not only suffice, but make things all the better. Ye of little faith shall perish. Karune's reply: As mentioned by Rob Pardo in interviews, piracy is a serious problem and often times tie in closely with LAN. At the end of the day, we want the best for the community and fans that support our games, and having chunk of the community pirate the game actually hurts the community. 1) Pirated servers splinter the community instead of consolidating all players who love to play the game. Battle.net will bring players together in skirmishes, ladder play, custom games, and allow everyone the opportunity to share a common experience. 2) More people on Battle.net means more even more resources devoted to evolving this online platform to cater to further community building and new ways to enjoy the game online. World of Warcraft is a great example of a game that has evolved beyond anyone's imagination since their Day 1 and will continue to do so to better the player experience for as long as players support the title. The original StarCraft is an even better example of how 11 years later, players still love and play this title, and we will continue to support and evolve it with patches. We would not take out LAN if we did not feel we could offer players something better. If I were to buy StarCraft II or any other title, I know the money I spent would be going to supporting that title. Personally, I would be upset that others were freeloading while others are legitimately supporting a title that has great potential and goals of making this title have 'long legs.' If you like a song a lot, buy it, and that artist will only come out with more awesome songs for you. If you like a game, buy it, and we will promise to constantly work to make the player experience better at every corner we can. Support the causes you believe in (This is applicable to all things, not just gaming). Don't be a leech to society, innovation, and further awesome creations. User comment: A question I feel is really pressing, requiring Internet to play over LAN means one more thing for people to maintain at large gatherings. What happens if the Internet goes out at a SC2 LAN tournament? A Proleague game? Karune's reply: Dreamhack is often referenced as the largest LAN party in the world... but in today's age, that LAN is also connected to the internet. I definitely hear your concern about the internet going out, which would be a huge, huge bummer! But as equally as unlikely, the power could go out... User comment: Karune, what about latency issues involved in online play. ICCUP in Starcraft and LC games in Warcraft 3 are all attempts to reduce Battlenet lag. What is Blizzard doing to combat this lag if they are removing LAN play? Karune's reply: This is definitely a legitimate concern that would be best to be brought up again if needed when we talk about Battle.net 2.0. User comment: Oh, Karune, you know as well as I do that anti-piracy and LAN are not mutually exclusive. Step 1: Connect to Battle.Net Step 2: Authentication Step 3: Access LAN games thereafter There you go. Authenticated LAN play. Low latency. LAN parties. Happy customers. -Clive Karune's reply: I will be sure to forward ideas in regards to LAN as described. I too have many fond memories of LAN parties. Update - Karune answers to more comments: __________________________________________ User comment: Someone said on another forum that the queen can heal. Is this true? How does call-down supplies work currently? What buildings can be salvaged? Is the Banshee's portrait female? Why was the depleted gas mechanic removed? Karune's reply: 1) In the current build, for 100 energy, the Queen can heal a biological unit or building by 200 hit points. 2) For 50 energy, the Terran Orbital Command can increase a supply depot's supply provided by +8 permanently. 3) Terran Add-Ons, Bunkers, Sensor Towers, and Missile Turrets can be salvaged for 100% of its cost. Salvage currently takes 5 seconds to complete. 4) Yes, the Banshee portrait is of a female pilot. 5) Vespene gas can still become depleted from geysers. Most geysers have 2500 gas each. User comment: So what energy abilities does the overseer have now? Karune's reply: In addition to having detection and increased speed from the Overlord they can use these abilities: Spore Cloud (50 energy)- Release a cloud of fog, covering an area and blocks line of sight for a period of time (subject to balance). Units that are above the fog can see into and over the fog. This ability is great at blocking the line of sight of spotter units on cliffs, block line of sight of Marines while your Zerglings run up close to attack range, or even to hide your ranged units like Hydralisks from the enemy while having your own spotter for the Hydras. Changeling (100 energy)- Changes into an enemy unit (Zealot, Zergling, or Marine) depending on the enemy race. This unit acts as an excellent scout. User comment: Bunkers salvage for 100% of cost? Looks like I'll be building a lot more bunkers vs zerg Karune's reply: Dustin did also mention that he felt this could possibly be too strong, but we will probably wait until beta for evidence before making any changes. |
Despite a big demonstration petition made by the concerned fans, and with more that 5000 signatures towards Blizzard's new decision, Blizzard obviously does not want to change their minds. So we'll just have to wait and see what the new Battle.net will bring us, hopefully it'll bring us some good replacement functions now that LAN is not an option.
Thanks to our member Mr.Rey for posting the news on the petition in our forums. The sources to the original forum threads can be found in the links below.

|
This is essential, i hope that they will do something like that, much like how Steam works. |
blizzard has pioneered incredible games, so who's to say they can't create a technology that would make LAN's obsolete?
Blizzard knows their shit. I am sure they do in this case as well.
#4 you're always so poetic :)
OMG! LAN has to stay in the game! - why remove it? WHY?
dont think of it as them removing LAN... think of it as them upgrading LAN into a system that works better. LAN but not LAN.
I don't know why all people looks so surprised, I mean, angry may be, but surprised? When we saw the first videos, interviews, images, etc of SC2 a lot of people said "the game is bad, because, mbs, automining, AI, they are making a noob game because they want money, they are killing the game, etc, etc, etc" All you guys know that blizzard makes great games, but they are still a company, they want a profit for the game, because that is what a company do, generate profit. If blizzard guys feels that killing LAN functionality (killing LAN parties when internet is not available, forcing people to go bnet even when they are playing in the same house/event, etc), they will take more money for the game, well I don't like it, but is their right to do. Ofc, if they decide to put LAN again, it will be great. Just a note: Its an illusion to think that forcing the people to play in b.net will finish piracy, sooner or later someone will hack the game, and create a launcher or a patch or something to make possible LAN play and even private servers. People doesn't buy the game because they cant get a pirate version, people buy it because the game IS GOOD. Is an emotional thing if you will. I play sc since 2006, I had a pirate copy in the beginning, but, I loved the game so much that I just had to buy an original one. I hope blizzard think about this once more.
no LAN will really hurt the poorer SC-scene in like china and other places there must be better ways of fighting piracy then destroying a community
Well, ICCUP can provide a low latency server, so I'm sure that blizzard can come up with something better. Still it sucks for people without internet etc.etc. It should be an option, but only for people who are NOT connected VIA internet, aka connected Ethernet cords.
even if their way is better , having an alternative and working way ( proven SO MANY TIMES ALREADY ) is still the best way to go. So they should implement their new incredible stuff ( i doubt it can beat lan latency really, everyone's not living in sweden or south korea ) , but they should also keep the LAN set instead of whipping it out . Wait & See , so far SC2 looked really good to me , but the Lan part is just too big ...
damn my friend from south africa can only play with us over LAN with hamachi since he cannot access bnet... and when he can people often leave the game cause of the lag...
All that wants LAN in SC2!!! http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/thread/415863/start/20 b>
i rofled... no WAN no LAN.. xd
`What a load of load.
now i have to flame blizzard for being retarded too =/
SC > SC II
now let's see who can pirate sc2 first blizzard's given us the motivation!
Might not be a problem at all. I just hope they fix so you can connect with more then one account to bnet with have to changes ports and stuff like you have to in BW if you want to play 2on2 together and stuff.
'1) Pirated servers splinter the community instead of consolidating all players who love to play the game. Battle.net will bring players together in skirmishes, ladder play, custom games, and allow everyone the opportunity to share a common experience.' Well, if Blizzard had provided an actually functioning ladder, as they promised and we payed for, this would not be an issue. ICCup didn't splinter the community, it united it. Something Blizzard failed time and time again. The reason this game is still played is not because of Blizzard's patching and updates, rather in spite of it. It's still played because of private initiatives like ICCup. Blizzard has no right to take the credit for this.
yeah, its a fucking joke to say "we offer something better than LAN". dudes are you retarded? you offer that anyway, how can a half cake be better than a whole one? fucking failed logic from blizzard/karune. i hate this gay marketing talk, they just let things look how they want and hope noone gets that they are fucking arround with their customers. all they want is to force you to stay in contact with them. these are thousand year old marketing tricks and not just for the good of the customer, like they make it seem.
Sure i can buy the game, but i will never pay to play anything online. Thats where my line goes. So if blizzard is planing to release sc2 only online, they better not make it pay to play, or they have just lost another customer. Btw. NO LAN = SUCKS, now bring it back
No lan = One starcraft for each player = a lot of money Lan = One starcraft for numerous players = only 60 dollars. It's easy as that...
umm ye wow fails more and more with every passing day (wotlk was epic fail ;o) so dunno about what kind of evolution he talks about here and removing lan is RETARDED idea
Wow, thanks for the credits but really, I found it on the french SC2 fansite called JudgeHype. Concerning the topic, I trust blizzard; but really, that's a big promise they're doing here.
Karune's reply: Dreamhack is often referenced as the largest LAN party in the world... but in today's age, that LAN is also connected to the internet. I definitely hear your concern about the internet going out, which would be a huge, huge bummer! But as equally as unlikely, the power could go out... Soooo.... lets say a lan (yes a small lan) doesnt have internet.... does that mean you are not worthy of being able to play SC2 together with friends? ^^. And what does he mean every lan got internet... Dont know much about how good internet is around the world but in Denmark its expensive as shit to have internet and the connection are fucking slow compared to what we pay for it.. I guess its just sad panda face from blizzard |
#20 see the 1.16 era when bn SUCKED simple as that, and hell it still does, playing with any fixed latency minimum is retarded, ill rather find someone i can play w/o lag manually and another reason why i think automatch is retarded, it excludes these 2 things to be met at the same time.
Actually it`s all about financial earnings. If this game was to be created for the community 1st than it would have LAN as 1st option in game menu..as it isn`t,LAN got out of the bussiness..although this is one STUPID and RETARDED decision ... let`s say i`m fucking poor and i have a LAN setup with my top neighbour..we both BUY SCII and we want to play it together..what then?i`m forced to put money in some ISP`s pocket so i can play the game i PAYED?NO NO...i HONESTLY hope the game will be cracked soon,LAN option included and only after that i`ll download it FOR FREE..coz it ain`t worth the money..i have so many friends in LAN`s,most of them having poor internet connections but all eager to play the new SCII...they won`t change their provider just to be able to play a stupid retarded automated game like SCII..BLIZZARD go make more Diablo and W3 pls..leave starcraft as it is..a legend..until SCII appears and it turns into a graveyard.Peace
prolly u have to buy LAN as an extra feature o.o anyways, hope some1 makes hacks for LAN hehe
Stop saying it's stupid... It will improve the number and quality of hacks ! Oh wait... that is what it is supposed to prevent, nevermind. On a more serious note, i'm not one of those who will use LAN that much, but i've put so much hope in this game that I don't want to see it fails. And there's almost no exeption, when a game does not support LAN when it's expected to, the game fails; there are too many exemples that show that.
lol Karune: "....if for whatever reason I did decide to lug my computer to a friend's house in this day of age (<1%)..." is this guy actually some sociophobic freak. LAN is not about multiplayer, it's about drinking beer, and having fun together :D
#20 SO DAMN RIGHT^
i predict one thing NO LAN = SC2 failure as a esport, end of discussion.
holy shit... no lan? :,(
MEGA fail, wth, how many times did we spend the whole night with friends on lan playing and laughing camom... no lan = epic fail.
Great. Means living in the dorms and playing starcraft over LAN (I do have legit copy, 2 of them actually) is now impossible. Of course, starcraft is blocked by dorms firewall, so that would mean...well....no reason for me to buy starcraft 2...
"We would not remove the LAN function if we couldn't offer the players something better." LOL we all know there is no substitute for LAN. This statement is understandable, but obviously a lie. But still, you don't have to cut off a boy's arm to prevent him from masturbating. You get him laid instead, which is the opposite of what blizzard is doing. |
hax0rs! show me ure best @ sc2! GoGo LAN!
Hmmm okay. so when i want to have sc2 lan party, i have to connect to internet through southafrican CRAPPY lines and play my friend next to me with lag :(
#39: I don't think it will be that bad :P Whenever you play through battle.net with your friends on a LAN you'll have no lag at all. Ever noticed how fast you send iex. songs and such through MSN to a friend when you're on the same connection? It goes really fast because it's sent through the LAN connection instead of the internet or something... I think it works kinda like that, but I'm not an expert on those things, so I'm not promising anything :P
Imo this is good news... Online play is 50% of the game, i like that they will put alot of effort into that. With their experience from the battle.net games and WoW i beleive they can make battle.net 2.0 something very unique and high quality.
It sounds "B*l*s*i*" to me....
