SC2: Senior VP gives confirmation on the LAN ban
Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 2 years ago

StarCraft 2 will not have a LAN (local area network) game mode, thus multiplayer will be available only on Battle.net.
Senior vice president of Blizzard Entertainment, Rob Pardo has confirmed with an interview with IncGamers that there are no plans to support LAN. Reason for this, clarifies Blizzard after the mentioned interview, is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net - which is something Blizzard will reveal more at a later date.
Instead they hope for all gaming to be going through the Battle.net service.
- Our aim is to deliver far better than we have done in the past, and basically connect players because the social side is important, said Lead Producer Chris Sigaty in the interview.

this is a joke
It's downright retarded if they decide to go through with this one, regardless how good the new bnet will be. A lot of people will always have problems hosting, and in a lot of cases it's just not possible to get everyone on a LAN-party online. In addition you'd have to deal with the increased latency when playing on bnet.
pro teams will practice at bnet :) lol
i don't like the idea at all :\
Faith...I have my in blizzard. if their plans dont work out they will change it up. they have always worked that way. Battlenet2 will proberly have some feature where it can see if your on lan with somebody or if you dont have internet at the time. Maybe something really clever. like bnet was when it first came out.
Maybe Battle.net with ping0 as hamachi or like?
Retards? Have they watched the Korean BWscene at all?
Wow this sounds really stupid. Hopefully there will still be LAN Latency... But still, I hope they realize their mistake and change it.
°:___°
wtf no lan?
well, i feel that the problem they might have with availing LAN, is because of softwares that allows people to host internet games with friends without a legit cd-key. It's a money issue. However, if you do not like it, at least suggest some ways for them to prevent it. After all, look at wc3, d2, sc1... they all have such "lancraft" tools and most players i know used "pirated" software to join internet games. Besides, with a proper account, they can be more motivated to create value-added functions, like security, and improve the system. After all, how would you feel if you just created the Game of the Year and 2 months later, everyone is playing your game, except they all used pirated copies. For LAN latency, maybe the hardware/servers will be handled by LAN, however you just enter the game thru bnet account? I know some games already do that. Lastly, Hackers always >> Gaming companies. Of coz this is just my opinion. No flames required. =)
theyve got it all wrong ... SC2 needs LAN to be big in esports ... srsly
It does sound like a stupid decision to me. Eh, but Blizzard has been watching the Korean e-sports scene, so it does make me wonder what trick(s) they have up their sleeve(s)...
Fucked upp way to try to cut down the piracy of SC2. someone gonna program a lan network xP
This is more than motherfucking dumbfuck retarded bullshit idea
ROFL NO MORE RIPPED GAMES OFF OF LIMEWIRE AND PLAYING FOR 1 HOUR ONLINE, ROFL PWNED NOOBS.
esports with no lan? interesting...
that sucks hard
i will not buy SC2 without LAN MODE can you hear me BLIZZARD ??????
hm games needs lan latency to be called e-sport if u ask me especially such a fast phased game like starcraft i hope they fix lan latency feautre on the battle net server else theres gonna be some issues and piracy and secret servers going on o,o personally i dont think any competetive gamer is gonna "follow the laws of blizzard" and play without lan latency. ppl will do whatever it takes to play with lan latency thats just how it is....
@11 you got it right there... Blizzard's an amazing company, but everything they've done for the last 5 years has shown they put more importance on making money than making a good game.
omg.. dont they see.. no LAN = no esport? and second of all.. they will instead be hunting hundreds of cracked battle net servers instead lol
Yeah they're doing this to combat piracy (which will never work), because I don't see any other reason why they wouldn't include LAN as a feature.
#12 exactly
WTF?
so all their battlereport games and such were played at LAN? So why not just keep it? Or SC2 testversions on big events.. ? srsly..
i rofled.. if they do this in diablo 3 also i will of course not play any of em.. SC2 is excluded from playing list now :] GG~
really joke brainless blizzard sometimes -.-
Seriously, the allready have LAN in the game (the Alpha they've brought with them etc...). Why remove it? Because they can't force Warden on people? Incredibly silly.
I dont think this will turn out to be problematic. Keep in mind Blizzard is developing this title for e-sports. They know that low latencys are required for competetive play and they had enough time to study technologies of low latency clients. They will implement a similar technology in SC2 and there will be the possibilty to play it over LAN like there is the possibilty for Steam games like CS1.6 and CSS for sure. Its just that you need to have an Inet connection to log on over Bnet2.0 Im optimistic. :)
WOW doesn't have lan and they play lan events as ESL for example. Don't worry people... probably he want to say that we must put our original login or Battle.net account to enter in Single Player.
blizzard is not the same team that created sc1 , they all want to win money, sc2 it would be the first game that i will buy , since no lan , i will stick the finger in their face....stupid choise to not go with lan after they will release sc in 3 parts....wtf, moare and more more and more money they want...wtf , i give u "teh" F. word...
hä??? dont get this... well some1 needs to hack the lan mode option i guess...
I'm pretty sure this means this option will be within battle.net after signing in, they just dont want people loling around and having a good time with a cracked copy. Just buy the game and i'm sure you'll be fine :]
See that post to sign the petition against that terrible, terrible idea: http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/thread/415863-no-lan -in-sc2-petition
BOOOO
I think this is a really poor idea, removing a great feature to try to hamper piracy is not the right way to do business. This is like all that DRM stuff with online music it will just get people angry and get the public opinion rallied against you. Also the lans me and my friends usually do we do not even get some kind of Internet connection, this because we don't want people downloading stuff, being on MSN or playing around with facebook. If we do a lan it is to play games and we don't want the distraction of The Internet. I can understand that if there is some kind of battle.net login and your local games show up there that will "fix" it for most people but I will still consider it a downgrade. I wont be to worried though with all the game clients out over the years for SC and WC3 I don't think it will be a problem but it is still something that just simply should be included.
if this is no lie , starcraft will never become a real rps // no REAVERS :O i hate them blizzard = new valve (steam)
#11, I wasn't aware that there could be the opportunity to play through the bnet account without internet access. Hm... If they implement that I suppose it would be fine.
this april fool's day joke is 3 months too late
Are they serious?
they will say it's for fighting piracy but it's really about control (see: money)
dumb they are pfffff how will that happen to korea?
lol @ competative esports for SC2 if this will be the case
Basicly all the things they said were B*** SH**. The main idea is to stop piracy. Battle.net will require original CD-KEYs and even if someone had a copy and a friend gave him his CD-KEY they would not be able to play together. "..the social side is important..." A couple of friends and I got together and made this huge LAN party - 10 computers linked in a LAN network. We bought food and drinks and had a blast playing StarCraft. I belive that was far more social than being miles away playing over Battle.net. I wish they would stop coming up with stupid explanations.
