Broodwar AI Project

Posted by Ragnar "Entropy" Birko 6 years ago
This is another exclusive for GosuGamers.net. Racine_ and BSW_rama, from the Broodwar AI Project, enhanced AI for 1.11 has achieved a whalloping 126,000 world wide downloads. Then of course Blizzard came out with a new patch rendering all our efforts to dust. Although the AI code worked perfectly if inserted manually the installer was rendered useless by the latest 1.11b patch.

Russia BSW_rama, the programmer of the installer has updated the installer and now it works fine both in 1.11 patch and 1.11b. So now our enhanced AI is easily installed with one click, followed by another click to play it. Remember if you play online with more than one human player you will both will need the enhaced AI. If you do not have the enhaced AI and some one joins your game, and they have it, they will be dropped as soon as you launch the game.

The installer also lets you uninstall in seconds with one click to go back to the original AI if you should choose so. If Blizzard makes a new patch Rama informed me that he can have a new installer within a few days.

This enhanced AI is considered a "MOD" by Blizzard. Blizzard does not sanction the use of MODs for personal use and non commercial purposes. In the links below you can read a little information about Blizzard policy on MODs.

Of course, as always, download at you own risk.

Download it at » Our download section

jcr2001 and u-man ~ grrr I can install it no problems and everyone wo beta tried it... send me ur comp specifications //

Its around 290k ~ all it does is grap the new AI file and patches them to the file that has the old AI files of starcraft. To make the installation last less than one second it patches the files were broodwar puts the AI files by default ~ it will not search for them if you change the default location of these files ~ in which case you will get an error ~

I believe that you can't actually edit the Micro Abilities of computer owned units, nor manipulate it without use of triggers within the games. If you can, they are no functional programs to do it with, so you would need to create your own. I know that IceCC has some similar functions, but it requires a MOD to really work, and it would effect the game online even more, stopping the possibility of any other sort of play, without all involved having the same MOD.

Most Ai Scipt Writers use the giv_money command, because its the best policy, since that Ai doesn't look after its economy that well. Keep up the good work, and see if you can come up with different strategies, and also try to widen the efforts of the computer Ai to include a good spread of units, all to the best advantage.

Towards the idea of the Computer Ai deciding what to do based on the choices of the human players, or be it the other computer players, that seems a little difficult to me. Ai Scripts are written before maps, and implemented into the game as it goes on, its not created while the game is going, with variables and pointers enabling different commands lines and scripts to be followed.

Maybe if it could use the If, Else commands you could achieve what you wanted, but i don't think that is possible, is it?

Good work you guys, this is really helping the community continue! New Blood!

#12 hum.. ur 100% right on everything u said.. :( Our AI has multiple different strategies for each race match up and divided too into specific island and non island strategies too ~ in the tree of decision nas many ramdon jumps initially to chose a specific strategy but once chosen it will carry out its paln ~ you will have to scout frecuently though to see what strategy it has chosen.

This is nice, but i wanna know something: when u say "this will not work with no-cd versions" you also mean that it will not work with a loader? Cause the full cd content is in my hard disk... is that so?

i like this alot, unfortunatelly one problem I have been having ever since the very first release of the AI project is that when I play against several comps at the same time the game will crash after about 30-40 minutes.. dont know why. I can play perfectly enough against one or two comps. more than that and the game will crash. =(

well, last time, it was working fine, it could install and uninstall in a flash. But after patch 1.11b, it couldnt be installed. I cant remember if i uninstalled it before applying patch 1.11b but maybe thats the problem...

It seems to be a current problem, maybe its something to do with your operating system and that of the creator? That is the most common problem. However it may be because of previous versions, thats the most common problem, as they can try to load from the same data file, edit and cause disruptions, right from the opening of Starcraft, if not able to run itself.

I would remove the old version as best you can and then put in the new one, if it is without faults that is.

Ok, I've played some 1:1's against these comps now in the last couple of days, and here's some comments / suggestions:

1. TvP worked well, at least on land maps (on LT the P is rather challenging!), though its strat was really really stupid sometimes... 3 gate mass zeal vs terran? eh. ok, maybe blizzard's fault since its AI usually did ALWAYS zeal rushes... On island maps (ok, I only tried once on charity) the P was rather freaky, camping in his main for about 20min massing 2893561 units and about 10 carriers... what's the point in that strat? Really boring.

2. TvZ I tried on Korhal Ceres. Ling rush was kinda nicely timed (though I managed to kill the lings rather easily by abusing buildings+scvs+marines :( ), and quite soon came also quite unexpectedly _many_ lurkers! The strat was really strong / odd, but it wasn't too hard to out-micro the lurkers, but the lurker micro sure was better than in the old blizzard AI.

3. PvZ on Dahlia Jungle wasn't too fun either. I did fast expo and was (again) fast ling rushed (even before my forge was done), which was rather effective. Later on I (again) was encountered by a quick _mass_ lurk encounter. Ok... the comp got pretty hard beaten after that, but I have to admit that the comp could've killed me if it'd used its lurkers more effectively ;).

4. ZvT on LT was also rather boring. Man, the terran was lurking in his base for probably 12min or so by leaving his main with about 5 tanks and probably two groups of marines and medics. That strat was _really_ stupid, since zerg can so damn easilty out-power the terran in that time. Attacking with 2-3 tank + m&m could've been effective though.

5. ZvP was rather boring too (tried it twice). Both times the P did the same 3 gate mass zeal to fast leg upgrade, and attacked with probably 2 groups of zeals. I see no point in the strat whatsoever. A couple of sunkens, lings, hydras, lurks, anything can handle a awfully straightforwars strat like that :/.

Summery:

The comp exps FAR too late (P comp on charity never even exped eh?), it's strats are rather straightforward (though they're quite challenging sometimes, especially PvT strats were good I guess).

Ok, I'm done =).... GJ otherwize! It's fun to play against comps sometimes, at least they don't whine about maps! (which is the main reason I'd want a challenging computer opponent).

the comp will chose randomly one of these strats..

TvT/2
gol/vult rush
tank/gol attacks

TvZ/3
fast 5 marines rush
regular M&M rush
no rush, big tank+M&M rush later

TvP/4
gol/vult rush
tank/gol attacks
fast tank/vult rush
big tank/vult attack

ZvT/5
6 pool ling rush/fast lurk attack
2 hatchery ling rush
fast expand/hydra/lurk
fast expand/muta/ling
2 hatchery/muta/ling

ZvZ/4
ling rush
3 hatch hydra/+1 carapace rush
2 hatch/muta rush
2 hatch/scourge rush

ZvP/7
hydra/ling attack
30 ling rush
6 pool ling rush/fast lurk attack later
2 hatch ling rush
fast expo/hydra/lurk
fast expo/muta/ling
2 hatch/muta/ling

PvT/4
12 zeal rush
dark templar rush
quick zeal/goon attack
regular zealot/goon attack

PvZ/2
tech goon/zeal
slow zeal/archon/temp/goon attack

PvP/5
goon/reaver attack
12 zealot rush
dt rush
fast zealot/goon attack
zealot/goon attack

These are the programed possibilities ~ as for the "boring" and "I beat it pretty easy" ~ it really really gets tiring to hear that. What you expect to us to say? "WOW your great?" .. its a comp ~ it will NOT beat a decent player ~ at least not until we can change the micro. I do appreciated ur feedback, just that a lot of the critisism is unfair.. u are comparing the comp to a human..

hm sorry #28 for the harshness, but I think I read somewhere (can't remember where or who wrote it, but I think it was one of the developers) that you should play against it like in a normal 1:1 :) (using no trix, like wall-in...). Yea I know it's a comp and it must be hell of a job making it act properly in different situations and making it adapt must be even harder! I just got a bit confused by a "non exping mass camp" comp on charity f.eg =)... ok it maybe tried to exp, dunno, I guess it might've bugged or something.

Wow, now that you tell the strats they really seem to have some great variety of good strats, either I was unlucky to get the same strats most games or then it bugged or something (the poor exping of the comp was the main issue I guess).

And no, I don't need anyone to tell me my skill level, I can quite easily figure out it myself. I guess the thing I actually wanted to emphasis on was that I _really_ appreciate your work =). If I'd still be a modem user (which I was ~4 years ago) I'd appreciate it even more, since I did most of my practice against comps in my early days.

Keep up with the good work!

The new teachs, are better, I can't beat the protoss on LT, she takes all the map, and when I try to kill one of the expas, I saw the AI, on my natural expa, and Killing my SCV's. Very nice, I can't beat one P con LT, the Terran and the Zerg, are easy, sometimes que Zerg get Insane, but still is a nice practice for micro, when the zerg goes Lurks and a lot of Zerglings.

I don't have the problem now, when I got to battle.net, I just un-install the AI, and I can play normally, I think that you (the AI Crew), Should make a compatible version with B.net, I don't want to keep that, to Install and Un-Install all the time, Anyway this new version is stronger a nicer, Thanks a Lot.
