![]() The first day is always a matter of orientation. I'm not the most social person around; a lot of people tend to know more about what's going on than I do. My brother, Artanis, takes off at the end of the tournament day to go hang out with some friends of his. I go home, and contemplate the fact that while he loves the social aspect, the reason I keep coming back is the sheer excitement of watching these games played live with the crowd around. It's a different kind of experience. It really drags you in: people cheering as soon as something magnificent has been pulled off, everyone going nuts when 'gg' shows up on screen, and the fact that the players are right there on stage. That's why I go, at the end of the day. On the other hand, day two is always a nice reminder I'm not a complete social shut-in: people you've seen the past two years pop up again. You run into Tasteless at the doors, take a moment to talk to one of the players for a minute or two, and you slip into the gaming area to make a few pictures after saying hi to the ref. So that's nice. Now let's hope I've gotten a little better at doing interviews this year. (You should have seen me at WCG06, on the first day, with Raist constantly sending me out for interviews and me flailing like a moron because I had no clue what to say. To this day, I really, really hope Draco doesn't remember me at all. Ahem)

This is my third World Cyber Games. That's kind of an odd thing to think about, especially where I am right now, lying on a hotel bed in a town just outside Cologne with my laptop and its too-expensive internet connection. The cars are insanely loud outside, and I have a fantastic view of the local parking garage. Last year, it was the States, the view contained a crappy sex shop, but the cars were much the same. This is my third World Cyber Games. It's the time of the year I find myself most excited for anything eSporty: usually preceded by a month of growing curiosity. As soon as you walk through those doors, the whole thing sucks you right back in. You stop eating as much as you used to. You're too busy working. You go home tired at night because you've been running around trying to get interviews, pictures, results, or just a look at what's going on all day. But it's all worth it. You don't forget a WCG that quickly. So. Three times for me. I look forward to finding out what the venue looks like when I walk through those doors this time.

The third day is, in my experience (of last year, mostly) by far the most fun and interesting to cover: with all the major players now decided, the most intense test of strength begins. Located in the press center for most of my time here, I couldn't help but poke a head out to follow Stork vs Mondragon on the big screen - leaving a neat note reading OCCUPIED on my computer screen. Few things have been as exciting at the WCG thusfar as getting in the details about PJ vs Savior. We all sat up when we got the 1-1; reports started streaming in over mIRC about how PJ was flying strong and it looked like he might win. I knew the result the moment I saw Artanis rushing enthusiastically down the stairs from the tournament area, nearly bumping into people on his way here. "PJ beat Savior!" he yelled as soon as he came in - some other members of the press sitting beside me immediately perked up, demanding more information. We briefed and confirmed it immediately - the excitement was tangible. Two foreigners in the top 3 - now there's a coup. Afterwards, I predicted PJ would face Stork in the finals (as much as I'd hoped for Mondi) and as it turns out, I'm right. SC final starts early tomorrow, on our last day reporting. Let's make it a good one.

Last year was my first World Cyber Games, and also my first real assignment with the GosuGamers crew - this year, I return knowing just a little bit more and... well, doing roughly the same amount of work. The first day is always the craziest: no matter how well you've studied those brackets, you're going to have trouble keeping up with who's where playing what. Lucky for us we've got some good people out in the field getting results left and right to help y'all at home get a little grip on the situation. Qwest Field's a big place, but a little hard to navigate: you've got the stadium upstairs, the event center at the back. Once inside, however... ...we found ourselves lining up for the press registration for roughly an hour. Fun times chatting with the other folks, but a little weird after stressing out so much to get here in time. The dulcet tones of Tasteless guided us in during the first stage match - and then it was all work from there as we ran around trying to get the interviews and results we needed. Manning the press center is me, keeping an eye on things and making things fully functional (just call me Cerebrate); Artanis and Trev are Out There, doing their thing. It's gonna be fun, kids. ... My brain might explode before the end.

There must be a way out of here, said the joker to the thief. A warning up front: I'm a TV geek. I keep up with the latest pilots, I keep up a schedule, I read websites. I study TV sciences. One day, I wanna work in TV. So bearing that in mind... (spoilers up to and including the BSG finale) I've been a devoted fan of the new Battlestar Galactica series pretty much since the moment it first aired. I've praised it for its confrontational and nuanced handling of politics and social problems - for a long time, it was pretty much the only show that could be relied on not to be left-wing or right-wing, instead focusing mainly on the fact that some problems just don't have black and white solutions. I was disappointed to see it going downhill, as a lot of the episodes in the third season were Big Issue episodes, with black-and-white suddenly very obviously in the picture. I quit watching the show when my favourite character - Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace (some of my RL friends actually call me 'Starbuck' because I'm such a big fan and I resemble her somewhat) - was killed off in an intensely bizarre way, though that was just the last straw. A few days ago, I went back and watched the season finale anyway - breaking up with a show is a lot like breaking up in general, really, sometimes you just have to check back to make sure things aren't different - and, yeah, the not-so-black-and-white was back in some way, but it still wasn't as good as it'd been before. And then came the ending. BSG hasn't used Earth pop music like a lot of TV shows tend to do - I can't remember an occasion on which BSG background music even had lyrics. So to have this song kick in now, with rumours of the next season being the last and the first real steps towards 'finding Earth' (the goal of the characters in the show; they aren't from Earth, which is why there's no pop music on the soundtrack usually) are being made, is very, very powerful. Especially this song, which is a lot like BSG, lyrically - metaphor and metaphysics that are really all about the world we live in. It was an awesome way to push home the point of them finally *getting to go to Earth*, combined with the last images of the Fleet's location vs. Earth's location and the fact that the song was covered by the same guy who usually does BSG - giving it that BSG edge which makes it not quite an Earth song after all... yeah, I was impressed. Again. Like I used to be. For just three minutes I got my BSG (and my Starbuck) back - the smart show that got its talons into me from the moment two of its hero characters shot down a ship that may or may not have been full of innocent civilians, just on the off-chance that there could be Bad Guys there, and that totally kicked my arse when a battle scene shifted suddenly into a 'soldier down behind the lines watching on' character piece in Resurrection Ship pt. 2. I miss that BSG. I hope next season will let me see her again like I haven't for many episodes now. Serious bizniz done. Have some Starbuck.

Good to hear your always charming self scared them away.Well, not that it should help in any way but if they are hitting on you and not your mother, that means you are at leat hotter than her, so a point for your self esteem?? Either that, or they hit on both of you because they are truly desperate....
