Open SC2 Q&A
Created 12th March 2008 16:12 (Updated: 15th March 2008 17:01)

Raistlin, our Editor-in-Chief, is in the USA and had the chance to participate Blizzard's Zerg announcement aswell as playing StarCraft 2 for about 12 hours.

We are currently running an open Q&A with Raistlin in our forums. You ask, he answeres - an easy but interesting thing. If you want to ask questions about StarCraft II aswell, you can find the Q&A here!
To have a better overview I will copy all ansered questions into this blog.

1. Is the Medic in the game?
- Well, she exists in the Medical Dropship, which is a flying unit that can heal and pick up units. it was mainly made this way in this build so it would work together with Reapoer who otherwise wouldn't have any healing. Though Dustin Browder and the others didn't seem to sure about having this in the game. They have done a lot of experimenting with the medic, giving it different shapes - and it sounded on them like they would just settle for the original field medic in the end.

2. Have u found any imbalanced units while playing?
- When playing Terran versus Protoss, the Archons felt very overpowered, but it was mostly because I really needed the Ghosts to EMP them, and is no really something you think of right away. Other than the Archons, the Mothership still feels a bit too much with its black hole. Three seconds, and then your units are gone.

The Zerg Roach was pretty tough to beat as well, with its high regeneration and fast speed. However, surrounding it and getting to get enough hits on it fast makes it easier to take it out. But the Roach makes a great choke defender since it regenerates so quickly. It felt a bit too strong.

3. To me it seems like the zerg have alot of updated attacks and units as well as alot of spells that seem really new and the protoss and terran get much less of these. Did it seem that way to you?
- Well, looking at the Zerg Queen she has a lot of new spells that are very new, while the Infestor for example has many of the same type of spells like the Defiler has/had. However I could agree a bit, but the Terran did actually feel quite new as well. Apart from the Siege Tank, Marine, Battlecruiser and the Ghost much of it felt pretty new too. The Protoss however felt pretty much the same if you don't count in all the new "warp" stuff which I didn't use too much actually.

4. How is the micro "feeling" in 3D, compared to 2D SC1? For example can you still micro marine vs lurker in the same fashion and feeling? And, Whats your point of view at micro in general for SC2?
- The micromanagement definitely feels like it is the most important thing at the moment, micro/macro is a bit 65/35 at the moment. So yeah, you can micro the marine versus lurkers somewhat like it was in SC1. Dustin explained that the units actually react a lot faster now, in SC1 it was programmed that the units "checked" for new commands each half second, while in SC2 it checks a lot more often. This makes it tougher to "dance" when it comes to mutalisks, but with dancing marines versus lurkers makes it actually a bit easier.

5. I guess you were able to play all three races. do you feel any of them has a significant advantage over the others at the moment?
- Not really, they actually felt pretty balanced in this build. Maybe the Zerg were a bit stronger, since they are the ones who are the newest and had the least development back and forth.

6. How much does the units' new mobility (reaper, colossus, warping, viking, nydus worm etc.) affect base layout and play style? much multitasking defending your bases?
- From what I've seen others play and myself, the base layout was pretty much alike the ones in SC1. It was hard to think totally new and not do like you were used to.

7. Regarding graphics - were you able to understand what's going on during large battles, or are there too many special effects?
- I was afraid of that, since I have that problem in WarCraft 3, but in SC2 it's much more clean. So yeah, I was able to understand almost anything. Only trouble I had was that I couldn't recognize all the units as well as I would have should I have played the game more.

8. Now that you've seen the product, how long do you think they will take to release it?
- considering they have been working on this since the releaseb of WarCraft 3, I'd say it could be everything from half a year to one year. It is still pre-alpha, they continue to say, but for a pre-alpha it looks very good.

9. Did you have fun playing SC2?
- I haven't had this fun playing a computer game for years. It has everything StarCraft 1 had and a lot more. Pure joy.

10. Is it a noob-friendly game ? ( easy to master )
- I would say it is up to par with StarCraft 1. Easy to learn, but a lifetime to master.

11. Did you test the game at the fastest speed? Is it fast enough like SC1?
- I played in two speed modes: normal and faster. I saw some Blizzard developers playing on Fastest as well. The speed feels just as fast as in SC1, and when playing Fastest it actually felt even more fast.

12. I believe that , so far, we haven't a chance to see a psi storm in battle - eiher on some videos nor at screenshots. Have u seen this might of templars in action?
- Yes, I have. The High Templar's Psi Storm was a bit disappointing, as it looked more like you simply placed an electronic field over some units. I think they could work a lot on the animation and design for the Psi Storm. But on the other hand, having it as clean and easy as possible removes all the whine on it being "cartoony, splashy and too colorful".

13. Zerg seem really vulnerable to zealot attack now that there are no sunken colonies. How can Zerg stop the zealots?
- Well, the Zerg still have the Queen who might not be much of an attacker in the beginning, but her Swarm Clutches work as a static base defense, plus you can tech up quite fast to Roaches which can handle Zealots quite well. I would say that Zerg is actually harder to rush than before.

14. Do the zerglings still have wings in the build you play?
- Yes.

15. Are we gonna see some copies from warcraft 3 with the ALT button to revele the units hp in combat, or still the same as the original starcraft?
- Yes, you are able to view the unit hit points in combat using the ALT button.

16. Can you rotate the buildings ? ... like when you select where to build them, can you also decide which direction should the door of it be ?
- No.

17. What about infest ability did you try it out ?
- Yes, I tried it out and it feels a lot fresher than in StarCraft 1.

18. Which buildings did you infest and which ones (if any) didn't work ?
- I only tried on the Terran Barracks.

19. Also the new infested terran shoots like a marine and somewhere it was written that it is slow ... doesn't that cripple the swarming aggressive feel of the zerg ?
- A little bit. Although, it's pretty natural that a former Marine all Zerged up might be a bit slow.

20. Dont the marines have bayonets? and if they do how did those function during game play? are they worth it? or is it safer to do the traditional hit and run style?
No, they did not have bayonettes. Although you can upgrade to give the Marines shields.

21. Do u think SC2 will be more noob friendly than orginal sc?
No, not really.

22. Starcraft 2 is now 3D. Did you feel any lag whatsoever? Do you think if this game was to play on a slow computer, do you think it will handle SC2?
- As I said before, they did not say anything about the system requirements, so I can't really answer to this. But I did not feel any lag at all on the computers we played on.

23. I noticed zerg starts with six drones is this for all races? or does only zerg start with 6 peons coz they need it for buildings? whats the maximum supply u begin with for the races?
- Each race start with the same amount of workers. I don't remember the supply amount in the beginning.

24. Does one have to pay upfront for every unit he/she queues like in SC or is it like in WC3, where you only pay for the unit that's currently being trained?
- No, you pay for each unit you build, however queing to build buildings only costs when it is currently being built.

25. If you would rate the game in 1 to 10- 1 having no feeling like sc1 at all, and 10 as if it is "3d expansion" :) what would you say? and elaborate it a bit please. thx
- It most definitely have the same feel as in StarCraft 1. 10/10.

26. How much did the early game change. (now that there are 6 workers )
Did not change that much, since you usually just wait for the workers to finish training in StarCraft 1 anyway.

27. Raistlin, I just wanted to ask... when you played Zerg, did the lack of detection ability of the Overlord feel it could cause problems for your early game (yes, I am thinking of fast Dark Templar Attacks) or was there a reason for you to feel "safe" from being attacked by early stealth (eg. Protoss Tech Tree doesn't allow quick DT build, or there is some ability that helps you detect)?

I tended to forget to get detection, for all races except for Protoss. But you can easily tech up to Overseer before the Protoss attacks with Dark Tempalrs.

28. Well i know that u don't know the requierments, but do you know PC's specification you played on?
- No, I don't know.

29. Did you get raped by any progamers?
- No, no progamers were present at the game session. I got defeated in a 2on2 tournament with a guy from IncGamers.com. We ended third place, while TeamLiquid with LastRomantic and semiold guy ended up in first place. Second place went to SC2Forums and GameReplays, if I remember correct.

30. Was the corruptor attack such powerfull as it was shown on the zerg movie ? (when terran lost 2 BC and few vikings)
The Corruptor is a great anti-air unit, but I'm not sure how buffed the unit was in the zerg movie. They are strong, and in many numbers they can of course take out battlecruisers and vikings.

Are we all nerds?
Created 5th November 2007 11:19

Who doesn't know this? You are visiting an eSports page, clicking through some pictures of a tournament or LAN. Suddenly there is a photo of a girl, a REAL female! The pictures before had an average of 1-3 comments, but this one has got atleast 10-15 comments, and I bet atleast half of them are either "woooah <3 her!!!!!" or "bah, she's ugly / fat / dumb / <insert any insult here>".

Are we really that poor? Gaming is dominated by males, and if you take any conclusion out of those comments one easily can think that all gamers are really nerds. I mean, do you guys also comment like an idiot to a woman you meet in real life? If you now would answer "yes" you should seriously think about your social life.
If you answer "no" you seem to be kinda okay in real life atleast, but why do we have to do such comments? I just don't get why girls in gaming are hyped that much, people behave as if they've never seen one before and act like crazy in the comments, others (which are worse than the first I mentioned imo) act like they are Mr. Playboy himself and start insulting, saying their GF is like 100 times hotter and the girl on the photo is ugly as hell. This kind of commentators wants to be seen as the Mr. Universe, the guy who gets every woman with only looking at her, but most in real life would not even be able to open their mouth in front of any female.

But does it really help to act either of those two ways? The reason seems to be that it gives one some kind of self-confidence, but this is an illusion, it's virtual. Even if some gamers would be impressed by such comments, you will most likely never meet some of them in real life and therefore it's worthless.

ESWC '08 - wheres my visa
Created 5th November 2007 10:43 (Updated: 5th November 2007 10:44)

The ESWC left their homecountry where the event took place for five years, France, in order to host their sixth event in San Francisco, USA. The first thing that came into my mind was, that SF has been the first city outside Korea that the WCG hosted their event in.

The second but way more important thought has been: "Damn, it's in the USA again!"
Don't get me wrong, it's not because it's the USA itself, I'm not an "anti USA" freak or something. It's was just because of the little thing called "visa" and the big problems that appeared for Asian (Chinese) and people from eastern Europe (Urkaine, Russia, Bulgaria, ...) because of it. Events in the USA unfortunately have always had such issues, not giving out visa to qualified players. There have been so many players missing events in the USA because of this and I have been really happy that the next WCG do not take place in the US (and even more happy that they are in Germany for some obvious reason).

Now the ESWC are going to the USA and visa problems will come up for sure. Okay, there are visa problems coming up in other countries aswell and the WCG in Germany may also have them, but I think that those issues are happening at US events more often than anywhere else.

Why do the ESWC go to San Francisco and not choose a country where it's not that hard to get a visa for players? The reason might be easy: The US marked is hudge and the ESWC might earn a lot of money there, who cares if 3-10 people can't go to the event although they are qualified? The sport isn't the most important thing, the money is!

It's not that important to have every qualified player participating, it's not important if there might be some favourites missing due to visa problems. The money solves, and there will be enough other favourites who still make the event interesting. It's sad in my opinion, but to me it's obvious.

Hopefully there won't be too much players missing ESWC, and hopefully the tournament organisations will finally learn their lessons if there will again several players be missing the event due to not getting a visa.

SC2 will be like WC3!
Created 4th October 2007 11:57 (Updated: 4th October 2007 12:01)

StarCraft 2 is in the news almost every day and most of the RTS players worldwide are looking forward to it or atleast think about how it will be and if they should switch. Since there are two very successful RTS games on the eSports market since ages (SC:BW, WC3:TFT) we already have got structures for casual gamers, professional gamers and communities, but how will SC2 look like? There are quite some differences between the BroodWar and WarCraft 3 communities, but SC2 most likely will unite most of the players from both games, so wich influences will form SC2?

Let's first have a look at the communities and structures of BW and WC3. The BroodWar community is strongly divided into Korea and the rest of the world, structure- and skillwise. While in Korea there are several events, TV shows and high prizes, in Europe and the other continents there aren't many big events, especially nearly no big offline competitions. The WCG is the biggest but also only big offline event for BroodWar, other important events are mostly played online and only have got small or no prizes at all.
There is not much media coverage on events such as live streams or shoutcasts outside Korea and ladders like ICCup are the leagues that are played mostly.

On the other hand we have got WarCraft 3. The WC3 community is much more professional structured in Europe, it can almost compete with the Korean BroodWar scene, although Korea is still ahead. There are several top clanleagues like the WC3L and NGL-One that have got high prizes and offline finals, there are solo events both on- and offline like the ESL Extreme masters (played online, finals offline), ESWC, WCG and some more. The players outside Korea are getting salaries that allow the players to have a living from it and totally focus on playing WC3 as a job.
Shoutcasts, WTV, livestreams and even TV coverage (by GIGA ie.) are available for several events and matches.

So what will SC2 be looking like? I think it will mostly adapt to the WarCraft 3 scene, although it's not WC4. The WC3 scene is, as it was said before, much more professional world-wide and so the big events and leagues will pretty fast add SC2 as a game title. I think big organizers like the ESL will create leagues compareable to the WC3L, ESWC, WCG and other (mainly Asian) tournaments will add SC2 aswell.
Next to this, the top teams such as SK, MYM, 4K might pretty fast contract the SC2 top players and give them salaries that will be equal to the WC3 salaries after some time - the SC2 community will become quite professional organized and therefore look like the WC3 scene.

Since Blizzard will have an own ladder that for sure will be successful (take the WC3 ladder as example, it's the most played one in WC3) there will be almost no space for ladders like WGT, ICCup etc. Teams like in BroodWar, that can't offer salaries, will pretty fast become 2nd or 3rd class when the world's top eSport teams contract SC2 players.

So if we count things together, SC2 will most likely get compareable events and leagues to WC3 and the teams that are playing WC3 professionally at the moment will get SC2 teams next to them (and later on instead?!) -> the SC2 structures will be compareable to WC3, although it's StarCraft we are talking about!

Is this good or bad? Personally I think this is great. The WC3 scene has got much more possibilities to follow matches live with WaaaghTV and other coverage, and therefore the community will have an advantage in following the top players' matches. The top players will be able to earn a lot of money with their favourite game and finally the time spent for playing StarCraft pays off for others than only Koreans and a very few foreigners.
It has been like BroodWar built up a base for the WC3 scene, wich took that base and improved it. Now SC2 will do the same and take the base of WC3 and even improve it, I think and hope.

WSVG closed
Created 13th September 2007 12:10 (Updated: 14th September 2007 12:27)

The WSVG closed it's doors after digging the own grave with announcing Guitar Hero 2, Fight Night 3 and World of WarCraft as their new official titles for the World Tour 2007.
Early 2006 the WSVG started their very successful World Tour with CS 1.6 and WarCraft 3. They were founded after Intel left the CPL as main sponsor and therefore the WSVG could be seen as the "new" CPL, atleast for 2006.

When the WSVG announced their new titles for 2007 almost everybody in the eSports community might have laughed about it, since none of the usual eSport games would be played.
I don't know the exact reson for this choice of games, but in my opinion the WSVG destroyed themselves with not having WC3 and CS 1.6 in their main tournaments.

Next to the bad game titles the organisation should have been bad at several tournaments, lack of admins and other things went not good. This has been a reason for the fall of the WSVG aswell.

The fall of WSVG has shown again, that tournament organizers can't change the opinion of the eSports community with lots of prizes that much. WSVG tried to make the people playing other games but they failed. So did CPL before and so it will be with any tournament organizer who tries to.
If there is a great game that is widely accepted by the community, the chances for being successful with a tournament series such as the World Tour are high.

If you try to get the players and interest of the community only by high amounts of money, but with bad and unaccepted game titles, you will fail.
This is what the death of WSVG showed once again, and hopefully other organizations will finally learn how it goes.

Another thing in the same direction is the CGS. It has been very successful in USA but will it be in Europe and Asia aswell? The only game that is some kind of "main eSports title" is CounterStrike, but it's played in Source, which is not that accepted yet in Europe and Asia. On the other hand it has been the same in the US, but teams like 3D and coL quickly changed in order to compete in CGS.

Personally I doubt that something like this will happen in Europe and the CGS will therefore become quite an American league with not that much interest in the rest of the world, but who knows?
If they had added games like StarCraft, WarCraft 3 - maybe it would have been more successful that any other tournament series.
