Hello again
Created 13th September 2009 22:54

Hi to both of my readers :)

I haven't been playing at all the last 3 days because of a cold that is messing up my laddering plans, sucks, so I thought I would write about what ive learned from my games so far.

First of all, iccup is full of protoses, and to my suprise this season, quite a decent number of terrans, but I have encountered very little zergs, so when I manage to find one, right off the bat first game I ask them for a bo3 so I can practice my tvz, now this is what pisses me off, very few of them say yes, and those who do say yes lie and after the game is done (if they haven't totaly crushed me) they just leave and wont re. But the majority of people I ask for a bo3 just say " maybe " or " we will see ". Now I can understand where these people are coming from because I was exactly like them, careful of whom I played, fearing for my points, because you never know who you might run into and how bad you might get smashed and lose points and rank.
But that shouldn't be a issue, I know its hard to let it go and im working hard on it, but just play whoever wants to play you on iccup, if they are much stronger than you, even better you will learn more, dont be afraid to lose, learn.

Now all of this might come off as a bit preachy but I am guilty of all of these things myself, and this season im working hard on rectifying it because its the only way you can improve.

As far as the actual games, they have been influenced by the current motws.
I don't play hearbreak ridge at all because tvp there confuses me, I don't really know how to take a base after my 3rd and it just feels like i have to kill the toss off of 3 bases or I am dead, tvz is ok except for the fact that just like on tau cross, my base is in a " hole " meaning that mutas can fly in from anywhere and cause trouble because you are surrounded by cliffs.

So for now I am sticking to othello being the map im most familiar in the motw pack, I've played some good zergs that just take a second main after their mutas and get 4 gass pretty fast, after that im just lost as to what to do and most of the time die to ultras.
Tvp has been going ok because most protosses i played just took their 3rd and went mass gates and arbiters, trying to break me fast and hard, and versus that i just camp at my 3rd making sure to have plenty of turrets and mines in my base, I am also trying to include ghosts in my play, i feel they are vastly underpowered at the average foreigner level, you have the tech set up, and they don't cost that much gas, just keep one in your base for recalls and take 2 with you on pushes, they can make a world of difference especially if you tend to miss with your emps.

So thats all for now.

Cheers

The new season.
Created 11th September 2009 00:12

Much to our joy, the new season of ICCUP is here, and everyone has his goals to accomplish. Every season before this one I would play on 6-7 accounts getting C+ B- accounts and stopping there except one season when i got B.

I would do this because I would get nervous playing at B- and higher ranks, nervous that i would lose my rank, get smashed by much better players and in general deflate my SC ego even more, but after playing this game for 4-5 years now I should probably be better at it than I am now, so this season I will play on just one account and try to reach B+. It will probably take me a obscene amount of games, probably 500-600 or more but I have some spare time before college starts so every day I will be trying to play 20 games, or until I rank up.

For now its going ok, first day of the new season I woke up real early ( thank you hangover) and went to play at Korean times, and i got more or less smashed going 12-10, as you would expect Korean hours are a bit more difficult than foreigner times (understatement :))
Ive seen people wondering at how some strong players like lzgamer or nyoken
have " bad " stats, but some people don't realize exactly how insane the start of a new season is, especially if you play mostly Koreans. As hard as it is its the best practice you can get on iccup and I wish I could play more games at Korean hours.

Now since I am trying to improve, 90% of the time I play standard builds, fast expand tvz and tvp, I to FE in tvt too but im horrible at that matchup so sometimes in frustration I go 2 port wraith, in either case I usually get smashed hard. As usual cheesing is rampant on iccup, but I don't get annoyed at it like I did before because I realize that those people are just hindering them self ( or are just waaay better players than me and are cheesing to higher ranks) and that they will gain nothing by practicing like that.

If you have ever tried to mass ladder games you will know that a very important part is not going on a tilt, that is when you drop a game, not getting pissed off, now Ive gotten plenty mad at loosing ladder games, not mad at my opponent or at his build, but at my own sloppy play. I don't know if it has ever happened to you but sometimes i'm just watching myself play like a idiot, I see everything that i'm doing wrong, but I just cant pull anything off right, and that makes me mad. Being relaxed and analyzing your loss instead of just madly jumping into the next game is maybe the most important step of improving.

When I first started to play SC, I could lose in the most horrific ways to just about anybody and not get mad, that was because I was learning how to play and assumed everyone was better than me, now after playing for a few years, I have developed a useless ego, a little voice that's telling me " you should be better than him " that is horribly detrimental to practice, and i'm working on loosing that crappy attitude as well as a part of my improvement process.

So I am sitting at C rank atm with 63% (due to playing non korean hours, otherwise it would be much worse) I will try to get to 4500 tomorrow but will probably just get shot back down to C-, but its all part of the process :)

I have plenty more to write and will continue this blog if anyone is interested. cheers
