StarCraft already a sport
Created 3rd February 2007 23:27

It's true. I've never made the connection before, but trying to recollect a past experience of me watching an actual sports game I finally made the best argument I could think of. Baseball.

What the f*** is up with that game and it's fan base? Sit in a stadium under the blazing sun for several hours watching athletes (some drugged up) hit a ball really really far from people who throw the ball really really fast at different angles and curves. Going by this fact, how could StarCraft NOT be a spectator sport? I mean how many variations in the technique to baseball is there? It's team strategy could be no less complicated then that of professional games played in korea. Baseball players no doubt have only SO many strategies and techniques they can use, which is just the same as StarCraft players in Korea.

I'm not a baseball hater, but I mean...I'd take a StarCraft match over baseball anyday. Just my rant...oh btw hockey > baseball, k thx.

You are not PREPARED!
Created 22nd December 2006 05:43

Indeed.

No one is prepared, not for the addiction that is about to take hold of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands people in the drug called World of WarCraft.

As an aged Illidan soared into the darkened sky with the bright moon behind him, a large voice shouts out, "You are not prepared!" For many people, this is true. How many out there can truly say they are prepared for what is to come from the "Burning Crusade"? The release of the new WoW trailer a few weeks ago had no doubt made millions of rabid fans drooling in their seats with credit cards in hand, ready to pre-order their own copy of the Burning Crusade. And there is not doubt that Blizzard's new game will quench their burning thirsts.

In the light of their new trailer and my WoW marathon, I decided to do a bit more reading into what others thought, which lead me to many articles. Here are a few:

-Ha! Addiction indeed...oh poor souls...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4273125.stm
-Enlightening

I'm sure this is all nothing new to all of us...just a reminder to make sure that you ARE all prepared. Oh and do check out that kid that was diagnosed with DVT from sitting 10 hours straight and not moving. All very interesting stuff.

For me, i'm too poor to afford the time and money that needs to be put into the crusade to have fun. Think of me as Canada, and the crusade as a really huge war, we can do peace keeping, but yah...you know...time and money.

WoW...the drug.
Created 9th December 2006 00:49 (Updated: 9th December 2006 00:51)

A few weeks ago Blizzard released a TV ad about World of WarCraft where they use a scene from Office Space. Peter Gibbons the main character just...doesn't feel like filing his TPS reports. He'd rather play World of WarCraft. That wasn't what caught my attention, it was the last few seconds of a blurb about a 10 day free trial of World of WarCraft. I said to myself, WoW will suck your soul + money, since this demo is free, it will only suck my soul. Ergo...well bottom line is, it's FREE, and who can say no to an offer like that? With exams coming up and loads of work to do, I REALLY wanted to try this thing out, so I figured, what's 2 days wasted on a game like this? And so begun my 20 hour marathon of WoW.

Am I a geek? Yah pretty much, do I know geeky things? Not that much, do I have no life? After playing WoW, I experienced what no life meant. I'm not afraid to admit it, for a few hours there, I really had no life. It was like a near-death experience where my heart stopped and it took the skill and experience of a paramedic to save my life, you know like on TV where they give me mouth to mouth. But rather then a hot sexy paramedic, that saved my life...it was...well it was just my shear will that stopped me from continuing WoW. Anyways, back to my experience.

I installed at around 15:00 hours, and I finished around 19:00 hours, so it begins. I started off as a Night Elf Druid, got bored at level 5 and started making random characters to get the feel of different classes and races. I finally settled on a Human Mage (haha yah, original eh?). I complete a few quests here and there, finish all my Northshire and Goldshire ones (I think it was Goldshire...well the ones in the Elvyeen Forest or w/e). It was around 6:00 the next day that me and my roommate, along with some other friends decided to go get some McDonalds. This was after playing WoW straight from 19:00 the previous night to 6:00 the next day. During this time I only had water and maybe a light dinner after downloading the game. After coming back, I decided to play some more, and I finally finished playing at level 13. At which point I decided, the game wasn't that fun. I tried exploring as many territories as I could before I got killed, met a few level 60's, got slaughtered by them and finally ended up in the middle of The Great Sea. Dying of fatigue, I ran my ghost only once to where my dead body was, but could not make it off my map into another section of the Great Sea, it was worth a try though.

So now what have I learned? WoW = evil. It's fun, but time consuming. While I was playing, I never felt hungry or tired. It wasn't only until the end did I remember the stories of those Korean fellows who died playing 40-50 hours straight of an MMO. It was kind of interesting to experience such a thing myself, first hand. I don't recommend this to others at all, and I'm sure some people have survived worst, but really what have they gotten out of it? Now my neck is sore, I wasted an extra day to catch up on sleep instead of studying for exams. There is no benefit to playing WoW in large amounts of time. And there is no point in not spending a lot of time on WoW...or else you're just clicking and killing things for no reason, other than the fact that it amuses you. How sad is that?

Although I admit, the folks at Blizzard did put a bit of depth into the quests and stuff, which made it very enjoyable while my soul was being sucked out of me. The game wasn' that bad, just I would never pay for it. A WoW character is only important because you made it important. I mean really, it accomplishes nothing in your life! Not at all, it's so sad and scary. I know many people who have wasted their lives on WoW...and know of people who haven't but have gotten level 60's. Those people with level 60's and are quite happy, well they still admit to wasting money and can quit at anytime, but still...MONEY GONE, for what? Anyways i'm just ranting now...

In conclusion, I think Blizzard's commercial should've ended something like this...

Peter Gibbons: ...it's not that I'm lazy, it's just that I don't care.
Boss: Oh...okay. You're fired.

*Later that day at PG's house.*
Girl Friend: Hey hun, how was work today?
PG: I got fired. [Starts playing WoW]
G/F: What? Why?
PG: Well, it's not that I was lazy, I just didn't care anymore.
*Girlfriend leaves Peter Gibbons.* =(

Roy: Oh hey, I've never watched the movie Office Space before, but I saw a clip of it in that new WoW commercial.
Blizzard: Oh?
Roy: Why didn't they just make a new clip instead of taking one?
Blizzard: It's not that we're lazy...it's just...
*Roy shoves a copy of WoW up Blizzards !@#*
