I. Foreword: Hey other GosuGamers.net users. I wanted to contribute something to this site, this in the form of a blog. I have been using this site almost every day for the last two years. I have never contributed anything worth mentioning besides some DotA replays, some skilled and some not. I have written a bunch of hero guides in my little DotA “career” and I feel like posting them on GosuGamers.net. This guide will be about Anti Mage and is the follow up wall-of-text guide to the Lanaya 101 done by WagamamaM and myself. The main reason why this guide will follow up the Lanaya guide is because I have seen several replays, even pro ones, where Magina is picked and just played/build so horribly wrong. I would just like to point out this guide is how Magina should be played in clan wars or fun wars. If you are looking for a guide with images on how Magina looks and what the lore on the hero is you have come to the wrong place. This guide also does not take pub games into the equation, simply because Magina is very high tier hero in terms of late game power and what not, this should mean public games are relatively easily won by him. This guide is written for the DotA versions 6.72b to 6.72f. II. Introduction: *When to pick him: You have to be certain that you can pull through early, mid and late game with your line-up. Magina is not very strong against other tri lanes considering he is a melee hero with low hit points. So if you pick Magina you have to be certain you can farm with him. This can be easily achieved by getting an Enigma or Lich on the side lane in your team, or focusing on dual lanes. Enigma or Lich solo on the long lane will force off at least a dual lane on the short lane of the enemy. This creates some freedom during the laningstage for farming. They force of a dual lane by denying the ranged creep and pulling the lane back to their tower by disrupting the creep equilibrium that way. Unfortunately when I first wrote this guide at least four to five months back Anti Mage was not picked at all. These days however he is a top pick. I like to quote from my guide which I wrote in 72b. “These picks are very popular now a days, however Anti Mage is not. You can easily last pick this hero. I would pick him when the majority of damage from the opponents is magic damage or if the enemy heroes are very mana reliant. Good examples of carries that really need their mana are: Bristleback, Skeleton King, Enchantress and Leshrac.” Of course picking has changed drastically. Furion has become a top pick. The remade Broodmother is now a top pick. Magina has become a regular top tier pick. Lycan has shifted in and out of favour. So I will try to stay as neutral as possible on when to pick him. He is a late game carry. He scales up exponentially as time passes. The EHP gain from his passives the damage done and whatnot just increases drastically with every item he obtains. Basically you have to play Magina very flexible, in skill build and in terms of mid game item choices. His role may really only be as a solid hard carry that does not mean he cannot be used in more ways than one. A quick introduction to the hero and his stats. Magina’s stats on level 1: • Base attack time: 1.35 (< 1.5 which makes it very fast for DotA standards) • Strength: 20 + 1.2. • Agility: 22 + 2.8. • Intellect: 15 + 1.8. • Attack damage: 49 – 53 • Average damage = 51. • Armor: 3 (16% damage reduction) • Attack range of: 128 (melee) • Movement speed of: 320 (>300 and >310 so very high) • Health: 530, 0.73 hp regeneration. • Mana: 195, 0.61 mp regeneration. • Attacks per second = (1 + IAS)/BAT • Attacks per second = (1 + .22/1.35 this is level 1 agility. • Attacks per second = 0.90 • DPS = 51*0.90 = 46.1. Magina has two passive’s. The first being Feedback, this passive adds 60% of the mana burned as physical damage. This effect is blocked by magic immunity. This is an orb effect, it does not stack with buff placers. Note that life steal aura’s do stack since they place a friendly buff on the hero and have no interaction with the Feedback effect. Since the Feedback effect adds 60% of the mana burned as physical damage you can life steal off this damage. The second is Spell Shield, which works like a hood. It reduces spell and magic damage on the target. It reduces spell and magic damage by an extra 50% on level 4, this on top of the hero’s natural magic resistance of 25% (note that this does not add up but stacks diminishing). Two active skills, Blink and Mana void. Blink works like the normal Warcraft 3 Blink. . . it teleports your hero forward instantly. Some interesting notes on Blink, if you click further then the max range of the skill it will only blink you 4/5th of the way. Blink has .33 seconds teleportation delay. Secondly Blink while projectiles like vengeful stun are thrown at you, will cause these abilities to miss. Always wait with your blink, this is more important than initially seems the case however Magina’s mana regeneration and his mana pool are very low, so even a 60 mana costing spell is a lot. Next to not wanting to waste mana the repositioning should only be used when trying to create vision or dodging enemy abilities, you do not want to get caught out chasing a hero and being stuck into a couple of heroes for 6 seconds. Blinking is the whole perceptive thing about Magina. The second active skill is Mana Void. It is a very hard nuke, it costs a lot of mana (125/200/275) so save mana for it. This nuke deals damage for every mana point (.6/.85/1.1) in the enemy pool that is missing, the damage dealt is magical. It stuns for 0.1/0.2/0.3 per level. Note that the damage and mini stun dealt to the primary target splashes, the last note is that this ability is blocked by Linken Sphere only if you click on the target. It will go through Linken’s when clicking a target next to him (useful for stunning during a teleportation). The stun goes through magic immunity so you can disable a channelling spell from a Black King Bar’d target. Because Magina is such a great flexible carry his skill build also becomes very flexible. I would like to underline that any skill build is possible with him but since you guys like pre-planned skill builds, my most used is: • Level 1: Blink • Level 2: Mana Break • Level 3: Spell Shield • Level 4: Mana Break • Level 5: Mana Break • Level 6: Mana Void • Level 7: Mana Break • Level 8, 9, 10: Blink • Level 11: Mana Void • Level 12, 13, 14: Spell Shield • Level 15: Attribute Bonus • [Level 16: Mana Void • Level 17 – 25: Attribute Bonus. I mostly skill Blink on level 1. This to ensure I can escape if ganged or gang if needed. Using Magina’s Hero Model to block on level 1 is of greater effect then trying to auto attack. A good other option to skill on level 1 is the spell shield, this gives you far more lane endurance versus heroes such as KotL or whatever other spell damage based hero there is. After the crucial level 1 skill you will need Blink if you haven’t skilled it already, if you have you need at least 1 level in Mana Break. This is the skill that defines your hero. After that if you have not skilled Spell Shield you will need at least 1 level in it, it will block large amounts of damage and this is very much needed on such a low hp hero. The rest of this build speaks for itself, however you can choose to skill the ultimate of Magina later or choose to max Blink earlier. Magina is a very flexible hero who can easily afford to waste a few skills on survival so he may farm more gold and items. Some notes I would like to point out, having the Feedback skill can prevent a lot of harass on your hero. Attacking for instance a Windrunner whilst having the orb effect can effectively burn down her mana so she cannot harass you with Power shot. This in term means more lane survival than for instance an extra level in Spell Shield. I guess I kind of stole the philosophical side of Thai Boxing (Muay Thai ) the greatest defence is offence, which holds true in many cases of DotA. III. Item choice: * Start items: In official games Magina will be played as a hard carry. This means he will be on a solo, dual or trilane since he is suited for all three. This is one of the many reasons why he became a top pick so fast. If you start out in an offensive tri lane versus another tri lane his start items should always have a stout shield. You will not really need last hit damage since his base damage is high. He also has a very easy to use animation which is quick enough to be faster than range attacks but slow enough to be able to be easily cancelled. The stout shield on early levels can add as much as five to six armour on level 1. Do not underestimate the advantage of having so much physical damage block. AM can also be played as a solo hero, like I mentioned in the opening paragraph. Again in this case he will need the early game survival so stout shield is a must in most cases (versus ranged solo’s). If he is versus melee solo’s it really depends on how hard the melee heroes harass, if it is for instance a Beastmaster I would suggest a Wraith Band plus some basic regeneration plus abusing the crow to send more regeneration if needed. On dual lanes he also needs survival yet it depends if he is on the middle lane versus a solo survival can come out of aggression. Having a quelling blade so you can get a lot more last hits can be a safe way of guaranteeing that fast Ring of Health. All in all your start items should be: Stout shield/Quelling blade, 1x tango, 1x salve, 3 branches. Or the alternative 1x Wraith Band, 2x branches/1x tango/1x salve. * Build: Phase boots, Vanguard. These two items are core to the hero. You will need some quick health and physical damage block, both these are given to you by the Vanguard. Before or after this item you need a form of upgraded boots, I almost always go Phase boots. Why go Phase boots on Magina over Treads you ask? The Phase boots increase movement speed, give the –noclip ability and allows you to get good last hit damage. Overall the lane possibilities increase a lot with Phase boots. You can easily keep an enemy on level 1 with them if you already have a level advantage from your support. Magina is just a very movement speed intensive hero. With this I mean he needs every bit of MS he can get. Chasing someone is what he does for 99% of the game if you do not count the farming, so movement speed adds more than attack speed or damage does since it purely adds extra hits on the target. Just imagine being on the short lane with for instance a Maiden as support being a dual lane (with maybe even a jungle) versus a solo Windrunner. This may mean that Windrunner will stay level 1 until Maiden roams. Because of the constant threat of Windrunner beating Magina in a 1on1 Maiden will have to stay. However once you get Phase boots you can just –noclip through the creeps and force Windrunner back and maybe even forcing her to use Windrun time and time again. This allows you to keep her level 1 without missing creeps and without having to go out of mana yourself because you need to blink spam. The pro’s of having Treads is that you kill creeps faster, your DPS on heroes is actually not much higher. The +8 strength can give you a big chunk of EHP against gangs yet the lower movement speed can allow enemies to catch up easier or trap you easier, especially in early levels when your blink has a long cooldown. Anyway after the Phase boots, Vanguard get a Yasha this is yet another item he really needs for the movement speed and for the DPS. You can also create a magic wand, if you feel like you need the survival. This item can be great towards the early and mid game, late game however you should sell that magic wand for one of the other late game items. Now you’ve come at a point where a lot of items become viable for Anti Mage. He can now go a Radiance, Heart, MKB, Butter, BKB, Ethereal Blade or finish the Manta. Radiance if you’re against targets with high movement speed or a blink dagger, Radiance especially offers a lot if you’re playing versus heroes such as Puck, Earth Shaker. Heart if you need more health and are doing fine in the DPS department, the enemy carry is a Furion plus PotM. MKB if you’re against a WR or a Panda any hero that has evasion or gives you miss %. BKB if you’re against a Lion or a group of chain stunners, or just a very team fight intense line-up. Ethereal Blade if you are going for the Shotgun Mana Void strategy, this is especially good against heroes such as Leshrac and THD. Manta if you need a dispel or an extra dodge on spells, Manta is especially useful since melee illusions also burn mana. Butter if you just need more damage and survival from melee hits, heroes such as Obsidian Destroyer counter items such as Manta getting a Butter plus a BKB is a lot better versus these types of heroes. Note to always go Manta over S&Y because the illusions from the Manta will also burn mana from their targets and you do not need a slow on the enemy. After you have full inventory swap your Phase for a Boots of Travel. Never get a Vladimir, let one of your allies get it for you. The most common item build transition to see in my perspective would be Phase Boots into Vanguard into Manta. After this you’ll commonly see a Butterfly followed by a Heart. After which the Phase Boots will be sold for a Boots of Travel. The item build will be finished by getting a MKB/BKB. So all in all your endgame build should be something like: Phase Boots (Boots of Travel), Vanguard (sold later on for a BKB), Manta, Heart, Butter, Radiance/MKB/Ethereal. IV. Hero list: Heroes that counter Magina are heroes that can make sure Magina will not be able to farm safely or heroes that can out carry or out push a Magina. Heroes that counter Magina via abilities that force Magina to be more defensive are: Batrider, Doom and heroes amongst those lines. Heroes like Bloodseeker and Night Stalker also fulfil this role as long as Magina does not have a Manta or a BKB. Heroes that counter Magina by out carrying him are: Lycan, Spectre. Lycan out carries Magina’s damage by A LOT in mid game time. Spectre of course tears down teams faster in late. Versus Lycan I would suggest trying to be solo as much as possible so you keep up with his level. Versus Spectre I would suggest farming faster and trying to be on lane versus her if possible, you will be able to outlast hit her and every harass hit is a big chunk of her mana pool. Heroes that counter Magina by pushing him before he carries: Furion, Broodmother. Furion can be quite countered by getting that quelling blade and not upgrading boots. Getting that BoT once you have Vanguard plus a Manta really helps a lot versus him. Quelling blade allows you to reposition in fights even if you already casted blink (talking about sprout). Broodmother, I haven’t found a way to counter her yet. I suggest getting allies such as WR or ES. Most other heroes are not direct counters to AM and AM is not a direct counter to any heroes. However he is, as mentioned before, very good versus mana intensive heroes with low mana pools (Skeleton King/Bristle Back etc.) and very good versus spell damage based casters (Leshrac, Zeus etc.). V. Additional tips I could not place anywhere else: So far none, however if I think of anything I will add yet another wall of text here. Considering the time I have left and the patience I have left I think I will stop with the 101’s for now. I hope this guide helped you guys though in understanding the hero and understanding some key points in item builds, skill builds and when to pick him. VI. Replays: I cannot really bother looking up the best replays of other players, so I will just link my own. So if you read this far and you feel like: “Muga you should really add this replay”. Please reply and I will look into it. http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/replays/48916 not the most skilled replay, but a good replay of mine. This is a decent replay for seeing a tri lane versus tri lane Anti Mage. The Anti Mage being on the short lane. http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/replays/49277 another replay of myself. Me versus a solo Doom. Also a nice replay to see how Anti Mage is played versus Veno Mancer, Doom, Obsidian Destroyer and a Weaver. VII. Credits: Credits to Deadmage for being one of the first Europeans to learn how to use Anti Mage to his full efficiency. Credits to Wagamama for debating with me over this hero. Credits to you if you actually read all of this. If you have any pointers, please give them I am open to feedback and constructive criticism. | |||||||||||||||||||
