Stay and fight!
Created 8th December 2011 20:26 (Updated: 8th December 2011 20:29)

Over the past few weeks the beta has opened up its doors to a massive amount of players, and with that a lot of different gaming-backgrounds. A lot of these players obviously played DotA, some HoN and a lot of others League of Legends.

With the huge influx of people playing, there's also a lot of different thoughts on how to develope the game and input on how to improve it. Various forums has been flooded with opinions on what is wrong and what should change. One of these hot topics has been the ability to forfeit games. For those not in the beta, it's currently not possible to forfeit (concede) thus people needs to wait for the throne or world tree to be destroyed.

From what I understand, it's generally HoN and LoL-players alike who seems to gather under the banner of having the option to give up ahead of time while those against being able to throw in the towel are mostly DotA-players or people who's fed up with the pessimistic attitude it brings with it to be able to forfeit a match.

I personally hope that they, Valve, will completely disregard these 'realists', as they seem to consider themselves, and simply not support this defeatist approach to the game. There's nothing pragmatic about not wanting to fight until the fat lady sings (in this case, the tree or throne falling). If all five players in a team keeps on believing there's just the slightest chance of winning, however minuscule the odds might be, then the chance will automatically increase simply because people are trying to win.

I've played a bit above a 100 matchmaking games in the beta thus far, and let me tell you, none of those games where my allies had given up was over. But the games did get a lot harder once they did. Especially the games where they simply went AFK.

If Valve does decide to maintain the inability to forfeit, and people gets used to it, I foresee and pray that the quality of the games and players will automatically increase simply because the people who usually tends to give up fast and just forfeits the game now have to finish the game in its entirety.

By knowing from the start that you'll have to play the whole match it brings with it several positive aspects:

Most players will try harder from the get-go and are less inclined to flame and piss off their allies. They will strive to win, because losing sucks, and try to get the teamwork up and running.

Players will want to improve: Suddenly being faced with the consequence of having to endure every painful minute of a loss, most will want to make sure it doesn't happen again. For them to prevent this, they'll need to be the best that they can be and in future games do what's best for their team for this to happen.

Hopefully it will help people lay aside their ego and instead use their head. No more lineups of 5 melee heroes, no more people automatically assuming that they can pick Dwarven Sniper or Drow Ranger and not get ganked. Someone will take upon themselves the task of at least buying a chicken and maybe even playing the support role. And when they do, find out it isn't all that bad to play to begin with.

If Valve is serious about punishing leavers, keeps a functioning report-system and figures out how to deal with people going AFK, then this will definitely improve the quality of games on all levels. From the lowest skilled public games, to midlevel inhouse-games all the way to the very top of matchmaking.

Naturally there's negative aspects to this as well, if people really wants to find them, but all in all I think this can help forge a much better community and a stronger playerbase.

If giving up, it should only hurt yourself, not your allies nor your opponents for that matter. It was never meant to work as a timesaver. It's a cowards way out and should be treated as such.

Time to fess up!
Created 28th November 2011 15:38

As some of you may know, I just recently started playing DotA 2 again (Tuesday the 22nd to be exact). Which means I've had exactly 3 months of absence from the game. The reason behind this was the fact that I needed to take some time off to start up a new job and more importantly wanting to devote all my time to my girlfriend until she left for a three month journey to Fiji, Australia and Vietnam. Not surprisingly she left last Tuesday.

Now that she's out exploring the world, I'm left at home with nothing but our dog to comfort me. And of course a huge desire and motivation to play DotA 2 - To actually get good at the game. Believe it or not, the latter has actually been a big concern of mine for the past three months. I was worried I wouldn't enjoy the game the same way I did with DotA 2 or that I wouldn't be able to pick it up on the same level I did in its predecessor.

So, the confession lies in me not actually enjoying DotA 2 prior to The International, nor during the tournament for that matter, and that I was troubled by the fact that the one thing I ultimately see as DotA's salvation was a game that I didn't actually want to play or devote myself to. The game simply didn't leave me with the same feeling and I couldn't understand the hype that a lot of my co-players and community profiles seemed to share together. I kept this to myself though, hoping that it would change.

... and it did!

Despite being competitively inactive, I've still played an occasional regular DotA-game every now and then, both wanting to nuture my skill but obviously also soothening my DotA-addiction. We all know that feeling. So this Tuesday, this decisive Tuesday, where I'm finally able to dedicate my time to DotA 2, I finally come to realize how good the game actually is. Game after game, the more I play it, the more I come to terms with how much I'm starting to love it.

And then yesterday, the ultimate form for redemption for a DotA-player who is hesitant towards making the change happens. The servers are down. I can't play DotA 2. No matter how bad I want to. I can play all my other games available, be it Skyrim, Assassins Creed, Battlefield 3 or even regular DotA. But I don't want to. All I want to do is play DotA 2. And that is when it struck me: I'm hooked. I'm left with the same feeling that regular DotA has left me with for so many years.

I can't put my finger on one decisive thing that has changed throughout my time in the beta, a thing that made me go from being sceptical to downright loving the game, but I can tell you this: Something has changed. Better yet, something has improved. And it will keep improving. Update by update, the "DotA feeling" gets closer and you can start to simply enjoy all the features and improvements all the while feasting your eyes on the so massively enhanced graphics.

I used to love DotA. Now I love and worship DotA 2.

A slap in the face...
Created 22nd October 2011 13:12 (Updated: 22nd October 2011 13:16)

So I got up this morning and saw all the fuss about Blizzard DOTA. People debating whether it would be better than DotA 2, who has the rights to the title, which heromodels are better and so forth.

I'm not going into which game will supposedly be better, it's too early for anyone to tell, although I do suspect that a full-fledged stand-alone title will win against (yet another) map/MOD.

My concern, however, is that this is not actually an attempt to compete with the other titles in this genre, be it DotA 2, HoN or LoL, but rather a slap in the face to the genre and all of its players, by Blizzard not fully acknowledging the game as worthy of its own stand-alone title.

Am I really the only one to get the feeling, when watching the trailer, that the sarcasm it uses in its presentation ("coming soon-ish - seriously") and the lack of a professional, serious approach to the game itself ("Two terrible gods, one red, one blue, to amuse themselves..."), is really just Blizzards way of once and for all saying: "This game is without interest to us, lets make fun of it".

I mean, come on. Even their title wreaks of selfrighteousness. "BLIZZARD DOTA". I don't think they could put it more bluntly: This genre would never have existed without us. As true as that might be, it would never have existed without the dedication and devotion from not only its developers, but more importantly the community as a whole. We have shown our support to the genre for years on end, gone through the hardships of not having a gamedeveloper to support the game officially (which Blizzard never opted to) and endured an old engine for god knows how long. And now, as one of the cornerstones in the creation of the genre, instead they decide to continue to ridicule it by yet again simply making it a MOD to an already existing title? Personally I think that it's downright disrespectful.

To me, this just goes to show that they still don't give a rats ass about neither DotA, the genre nor its community. This is just them, trying to salvage some of the players they'll be losing from when WC3 finally goes extinct due to DotA 1 no longer being played. It might be a fun game to play, once it's released, but I honestly doubt it'll receive the support and nurturing it needs to balance itself. It needs a devoted community and a guy like Icefrog. And I think they've gone elsewhere by then.

SMM's change into DotA2
Created 10th October 2011 14:02

I was asked to post this as a blog since a lot of people would otherwise miss it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To begin with, I would like to urge all of the people who are against the change from DotA1 to DotA2 to calm down and rethink the situtation and motivation behind it.

Let me start out by saying that to me this looks like a decision that is in no way influenced by Valve, but simply accepted by them for obvious reasons. So if there's any monetary reasons behind this decision, it is most likely from SMM's side, not Valve.

Having been at the International and being in close contact with Valve, you come to realize that this company, and the people behind it, isn't in it for the money. They are the most dedicated people working every hour of their day trying to make DotA2 the best game it can be and to promote it as an actual sport/game. They do everything in their power to please the teams and players, they go out of their way to insure that the game has the highest game-quality possible and that the feeling will match, if not surpass, the one we all know and love from DotA1.

I agree with everyone saying the limited pool of heroes is a severe handicap, but once I was shown the numbers of the difference in strategies and hero-selections in The International and compared it to that of an equal tournament in DotA1, I realized that the diversity in picks was almost identical. Heroes such as Faceless Void, Shadow Priest and Leshrac even saw a lot of gametime in DotA2, more than making up for the usual heroes such as Broodmother and Syllabear not being available.

That some Malaysian teams will be handicapped by having less exposure to the game is a problem, I think everyone can agree to that, but I hope SMM reacts fast and hands out keys for them as soon as possible so that their practice can match that of the rest of the world. With that being said, and SMM being an predominantly Asian tournament, it's really only a very few select teams attending the tournament that will have an edge in terms of experience, the main contenders probably being MuFC and MYM.SG, both of who's been actively playing DotA1 ever since The International, making it sort of equal. But I do agree, that too is a handicap.

In terms of viewership, exposure of the game and its community and the attention this tournament can get from rest of the world, it just rose massively by changing to DotA2. Something the professional scene will only benefit from. So while the DotA1-loyal fans, myself being one of them, might suffer by being thrown into having to follow a 'new' game much sooner than expected, it's really for the better of the pro-scene we all love to follow, and as such we should look ahead and appreciate how this can benefit us all in the long run. With players getting more exposure and the game rising in popularity, the teams will be able to participate in tournaments worldwide, regardless of where they're from, more tournaments will include DotA2 or new ones will spawn because of it, and we will all have a much wider array of tournaments to follow as well as a much more active pro-scene with will play increasingly often.

I pray WDC will take the same step to have a mutual agreement and to not burden the players by having to practice two games at once (ESWC, SMM

I hope everyone will support the transition of the game, no matter how rough in the beginning, and realize that this isn't a marketing-scheme or simply designed to make money, but a global attempt to popularize the game we all cherish so much and make superstars out of your favourite teams and players.

+1 for DotA2.

TBH you are quite the pretentious prick. Maybe if you backed any of your forum posts with results i could take you serious, but you sir have always been a tier 2 player in europe. And always will be. EG is fail. You are fail. Sorry i have the ut most respect in your dota ability but your posts in GG.net and against the dota community have diminished any respect i have for you to zero. Perhaps if you could even win one game against top teams such as Na'Vi or Chinese your pretentious behavior on forums could be overlooked but you have never done anything great. Artstyle is obviously a better captain and your diminishing hold (you're getting worse and worse) of a captain is truely a disgrace to EU Dota.
