Had a couple of hours to kill today so i decided to try out Dota. Nice map, very time consuming, a bit frustrating, probably because i suck at it, went like 5-15. But, more importantly it got me thinking: 1. WarCraft I: food supply 100, two races, few units with abilities, two income sources. 2. WarCraft II: food supply 200, two races, more units with abilities, two income sources. 3. WarCraft II E1: food supply 200, two races, even more units with abilities, three income sources. 4. StarCraft: Food supply 200, three races, again more units with abilities, two income sources. 5. StarCraft BW: Food supply 200 even more abilities, two income sources. 6. WarCraft III RoC: Food supply 100, four races, less units overall, two income sources. 7. WarCraft III TFT: Same, more choice. 8. WarCraft III Dota: One unit, one income source. We have a nice pattern. Clearly the difficulty of games were increasing from War I to SCBW, excluding the disappearance of oil, but then it suddenly degraded with WAR III and now again with Dota. So, my question is, what happened between №5 and №6? What made them rethink the pattern? WarCraft III should have had 4 races, 200 supply and about the same amount of units/abilities as StarCraft, only giving players more freedom and choice by adding additional race, advanced map editor capabilities and refined Battle.net 1.5 service. For some reason they backed down from logical evolutionary pattern in favor of much simpler version.

StarCraft II vs. Command and Conquer 4: So, StarCraft II is going to come out eventually, probably in the spring of 2010, maybe later. At the time the new CnC will be out as well. StarCraft community excluding Korea and China has about 200k souls, so i assume everyone will buy a copy, but Blizzard are aiming at nothing less than a million copies during the first couple of months, possibly several million copies, meaning that they need to attract a huge new audience. Look at those two pictures and reply to: which of the two games, a kid, who never heard of StarCraft because it's 1998 game is going to buy? CnC ![]() StarCraft II ![]() Exactly. Command and Conquer 4. It will have just as good of a storyline, probably better. Professional actors, girls with big boobs and non-cartoonish gfx that actually look like it's 2010, AA and all the corresponding effects that aren't even in SC2 cause of performance issues. ...and you know what, CnC sells well over 2 million copies for every addition. It has LAN, EA's own Battle.net, battle reports, ladder, regular patches and it's easier for someone who might be starting out in RTS stuff. Here is a monologue of Blizzard development director whoever he is: 1. WoW. Jacobson, what the hell are you doing here? What the fuck is StarCraft II?! Go to WoW section and help there. You see, there are over 10 million fat people who will buy it and pay $15/month each, so go help with that. 2. SC2. Jacobson, what the hell am I gonna do with your ass? Why are you still in WoW while you should be working on StarCraft II? Engine?! Take the WarCraft III thing and hire that guy from CnC, he knows how to stamp those one game a year. 3. Balance. Forget that perfectly balanced piece of crap with it's huge audience and over 11 million sold copies, revamp, revamp and then revamp some more. 4. Macro. That macro thing is a lot of pain, can you kinda ease on that? Maybe make workers auto-mine, let them select everything they want. ' 5. Minerals. Yes, be quiet, don't tell anybody. I've been playing CnC3 the other day and there were like blue purple kind of purpleblue tiberium things that are 150% worth, so i though, can we copy, but not to draw suspicion, can we paint them golden sort of yellow? We can?! Great! 6. Gas. What's the deal with getting expansions to get extra gas? Just double up on the thing, who cares if LT now has like 48 geysers. 7. Units. No, make up a bunch of new units we'll have to spend 2 years balancing, add a bunch of CnC features so it doesn't look so dry. 8. LAN. What's this button here? What's LAN?! So you mean like people can play in internet cafe's and stuff? Party game, are you mad?! Remove it immediately. No, i don't care it's been in all our RTS games since 1996! Yes, i know everyone else still has it, i don't care! 9. Mothership. You know, Jacobson, my mother in law is coming to visit this weekend and i tell you, i hate that woman. She is so fat she's gonna collapse into herself like a black whole. She doesn't fit anywhere, very slow, sucks out all my free time. Boy, if i could just find a ship and sent her to Zimbabwe or something like that wait...Mother...Ship...YES!....MOTHERSHIP! 10. Expansions. Yeah, and before i forget, don't bother really balancing, we'll release 2 expansions in the next two years, new units and stuff, then balance, and don't release more than 1 patch in 2 months. 11. B.net 2.0. Also, have you seen that iPhone? I WANT the same apple store app thing on battle.net so ppl can sell stuff. Could i buy an analogue of apple store Gay Cruising App from B.net 2.0? No?! Okay, maps it is. 12. Achievements. Let people unlock a bunch of pictures by playing a game, you know, because everybody is 12 years old and likes shiny pictures. 13. KeSPA. You see those Korean losers? Sue them! No, i don't care for what, something about a Lizard, who gives a damn. I want to get a piece of what they did with 0 help from us over 10 years.
