WoW PvP from experience
Created 18th August 2009 16:57 (Updated: 18th August 2009 17:20)

I've been playing World of Warcraft on a daily basis for the last 5 years, and specifically competing in the Arenas for the last 3 years.

I think there is a lot of misconception here at gg.net about what the game is really like. In large part this is due to the entry barrier of the game. You have to start at lvl 1, which any serious RTS player is just not used to. Today I thought I would give everyone some insight about what the complete picture is from a PvP perspective.

Level 1 - 59
Through these levels you will experience WoW in it's oldest form. You will spend your time just grinding through quests; basic kill or collect quests for the most part. There are instances to run but it will be very difficult to find a group and largely be a waste of time anyway.

The best way through this stage is to get a mod called Quest Helper. It will automatically point you to the location of every quest, greatly speeding up the process. You will start in one area and complete all the quests, the last quest in each area leads you to the next area. Follow the pattern until you are leveled. It will take about two weeks of average play to get through here.

Level 60-69
From 60 - 70 you will enter Outlands which is the first expansion area "The Burning Crusade". But don't get to excited your still questing, the instances are still largely a waste of time. However in the expansion they did improve on the type of quests and the areas you visit. Quests are more varied, the areas are much more detailed and interesting to travel in. You also gain a flying mount at this stage which further speeds up the process. Expect to spend a week or so in this area.

Level 70-79
Your in the home stretch now. You will find yourself heading to Northrend, where the quests have been improved on again, and the areas are just beautiful compared to anything you have seen so far in the game. Your still in the quest grind, but now you will find running instances a real possibility and worth your time. At the end of each zone you will get a few quests that lead you into the areas dungeon. Finding a group at this stage wont be to much trouble and the gear you get will generally last you to level 80. Plan to spend another week to week and a half in this area.

Level 80 - The real game begins
So you just spent the last month or so going through what every WoW player has termed "The Grind". We don't like it much either, i've personally ran through it 7 times now. But the end game is more than worth it, at least to me (and about 12 million other people ;).

If your interested in PvP it begins here. The first thing you will need to do is gear up. So you will head to the Battlegrounds to earn honor and purchase the PvP set items. To start you will not be able to unlock any of the top pvp gear. However you will be able to get decent gear that is 2 Seasons behind the current season (each new seasons gear is about 10% better than the previous season).

At the same time you will want to find an arena team to play on. 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5. 3v3 is the current main bracket. Don't expect to do well at first, arenas are highly competitive and with your lack of gear you can only expect so much.

But If you find some good team mates, and are pretty talented yourself, you will only need to get half of the 2 season old battleground gear before you start unlocking the current season items.

"let me step out for a second and explain how this works. The Arenas are a ladder system, your new team starts at rank 0. Winning matches increases your rank. Once you reach about rank 1500 you start unlocking current season gear (gear requires you to be a certain rank before you can purchase it). You will also earn arena points to purchase current season set items, the higher your rank the more points you earn each week."

You will spend the next two months or so working your way up the ladder and unlocking gear. If your good you've gained a 1930 rank or better and have unlocked all the gear. Another two month after that, you will have purchased all of the current seasons gear and be what we call "Gear Maxed".

Once your Gear Maxed
This is when the real pvp competition begins. Pretty much everyone who is 1930 or higher has maxed out there PvP gear, and thus are all playing on a fairly even playing field. Every team past this point is separated by skill and group composition.

A season will last about 6 months, with each new season a new higher set of gear is released along with it. But at this point everyone is earning gear at the same rate, and at the beginning of each new season you spend the next two months gearing up. Which simply means you keep playing arenas and are able to start purchasing the newest seasons gear as you earn the points.

The competition
The competition is fierce, in the US you will play in one of 13 Battlegroups. Each Battlegroup has on average 30,000 teams to play against. Getting over a 2000 rating is very tuff and will put you in the top 1000 teams. Competing past that requires a significant amount of skill.

If you thought getting into the higher ranks of SC or WC3 was tuff try WoW. Not only are there significantly more teams to compete against, but all the players have committed the better part of 6-8 months just to be able to compete, making the entire player base very dedicated.

Conclusion
So there you have it. Hopefully anyone who reads this far will take away a better picture of what WoW PvP is really like. Also, keep in mind I did leave out some detail about the PvP environment. The goal was to give you a general picture of what it's like. Maybe I'll write another blog that covers in detail the on-goings of endgame PvP.
