How SC and WoW relate
Created 29th October 2010 03:40

Hello to anyone reading this blog post. This is my first blog post EVER actually so for those who do know me quick intro(not sure how the formality of blog posts go but what the hay), I go as Bobo, been playing Starcraft since Vanilla and have been playing WoW for a little over a year.

So now, why do I make this blog post you may ask? Too many times either in WoW or Starcraft, there seems to be so much hatred towards the other game. The purpose of this blog is to see how both games relate, both in the gameplay and the e-Sports scene.

As we all know Starcraft is the most popular game in the world. No doubt about it. It IS the most popular game in the world. I don't care what anyone says, but when you have TV channels dedicated to 1 game(talking about South Korea people), what other proof do you want? I mean come on.

WoW is the biggest MMORPG game in the world. No doubt about either. Just recently Blizzard announced that there are over 12 million subscribers. Huge. If this is not the biggest MMORPG and Guild Wars, Knight Online, or Runescape is bigger than WoW, then I can't help but say WoW is far more entertaining, a lot more in-game content, and overall just well rounded as a game(yes I've played all 3 of the other games).

So now, why do so many players of each game hate the other game so much? I know from personal experience I get hate love from my WoW guildies and SCII buddies that I've been playing with since BW. In all honesty I see TONS of similarities between both games.

For one, Starcraft requires very fast decision making. It requires planning. It requires dedication. It requires practice, practice, and more practice. And among other things, it requires decent amount of APM. Now of course, WoW doesn't require NaDa apm but it does require fast decision making. If your an undergeared tank or an undergeared healer, you need to be really swift in your decision about what spell to use, what rotation best fits your play style, and really important boss decision making regardless of your role in a raid or a PvP arena. Granted in WotLK the tanks gemmed stamina after reaching the expertise cap and defense cap, but with the new tactics presented in patch 4.0.1 and the new abilities classes will have in Cataclysm, it seems to me that there is going to be a lot more decision making and planning before a boss encounter -> just like in Starcraft.

Before you enter a game in Starcraft(now these are people playing ladder, no matter what your rank, wanting to get better) what do you do? You do practice games either with friends or on ladders themselves. You watch replays of yourself and of other people studying their strategy. You study your own mechanics; what could you do, what could you have done better, what things do you need to do polish up your build. You watch the Day[9] dailies(WoW players read guides, visit forums on PvP, or watch TankSpot videos on youtube to study Boss encounters, or they duel other players->anyone catch the similarities?). The thing is, EVERY player in WoW prepares for a fight, whether in PvP or PvE, and practice our plan. If it doesn't work, we look back, and polish it up, and try again.

If you play Starcraft and WoW, you will see how playing both games pay off. My APM in Starcraft makes me relatively comfortable when it comes to raiding or PvPing, I am really comfortable using 5 actions bars and using shift+___ to switch between the bars because im already used to it from Starcraft.

As far as the e-Sports scene goes, Starcraft IMO is a lot more popular than WoW but that doesn't mean the game is better. Both games have their games and weaknesses and depending on what type of gamer you are, you will be more inclined to watch another game online as opposed to others. I suppose if you could save replays of you doing arena matches and watching them later that would be pretty cool and allow for the PvP scene of WoW to be more popular, but thats going on a tangent.

In all honesty, I just wrote this blog to hopefully share the light with the WoW players hating Starcraft and vice-versa. Remember, Starcraft and WoW and Diablo are all branches of the big daddy; Blizzard. Being able to become such a successful company off of 3 franchises is pretty impressive in my eyes and should be in yours too. We should all hold hands, sit around a campfire, and sing wonderful hippy songs with a ukelele about Blizzard but sadly we can't. Instead, we should cherish the games Blizzard gave us, give our fellow Warcrafters a hug and a high five because we are all part of a family->the Blizzard family.
