Tritton AX Pro Review

One of the first things that you notice when you open up the box is that there are a lot of chords. This is not an exaggeration, there are cables for nearly every input, along with two power plugs. The headset is divided into a couple separate segments. You have the headset itself with inline controls, the Dolby decoder box and a removable microphone. The inline controls are one of the best features of the headset as there are four separate channels with front, rear, center and sub along with total volume control, microphone volume and microphone on/off switch.

The initial setup can be a little confusing depending on your computers set up, but as long as you have an optical output on your sound card, you will have the best set-up for this headset. Just plug in the optical cable, and the USB cable (for the microphone) change your settings on your computer and you are set. If you do not have a optical setup there is a cable to plug the headset directly into your soundcard with the G9 PC Cable. On one of the computers I tested the headset on I ended up having to upgrade the soundcard drivers to get it to work after some troubleshooting.

Once set up and plugged in the headset is easily one of the best headsets I have ever used for gaming. The surround sound absolutely shines in this headset and the sound is crystal clear at every volume level and doesn't blow out at maximum volume which is really impressive. StarCraft sounds beautiful in this headset and the surround sound is a nice addition to other traditional stereo headsets. You can hear when units are calling for help, if they're in the bottom left corner of your view, that is where you will hear them from! While not essential for gameplay, this is a great addition and gives it a level of depth. The same experience was felt in WarCraft III and DotA.

The microphone is clear and communicates your voice very well and is adjustable left to right so you can have it as close to your mouth as you would like, only complaint that could be had with the microphone is that is is only on the right side. Another issue that I had with the headset is that the sound doesn't really stay in the headset, there is a a lot of sound that seeps out so if you're using this to be completely quiet these may not be the headset for you. On the other hand though, it really tunes out the outside world and during testing I didn't notice people talking to me with them on until they tapped me on the shoulder.

The set up can be an annoyance if you're not familiar with your set-up and the requirement for two BIG spots on a powerstrip, this may be a big negative for some. The headset is also a bit on the heavy side and can hurt a little after extended gaming session, but you can also swap out the ear coverings for a faux leather covering or cloth covering based on your preference, so your mileage may vary.

Besides the minor inconveniences though, the headset is an extremely well built, great sounding headset. It is a versatile headset that can be also used with an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3 if you play games on those consoles in addition to the PC. Is it worth the price though? If you are serious about your gaming and want the best sound you can get, then this is a headset to take a very long look at. The price is completely worth it for what you get especially with a game like StarCraft II coming up that will take advantage of a surround setup.

The best place to track one down would be Tritton's own website, as each region seems to have a different distributor, so be sure to check that out on their site to get yourself one!
