WCG Brazil Update

[s]event_wcg[/s]The Brazilian community WCG organizers, VSEN have acted rather swiftly and shown an enviable firmness. They have shown little tolerance to the recent unfortunate events involving an already very polemic player, aka Brazil VikteR and have promptly disqualified him and sanctioned him after an extensive investigation of the events.

I spoke to their representatives to get their side of the story. They did insist on a few clarifications to my previous post, stating that the time schedule of the WCG starcraft players was chosen by the players themselves who apparently were given a choice between playing in the morning or at night. They also gave me a rather impressing list of misfortunes that they managed to overcome one by one that most of the community is unaware.

Apparently their systems were sabotaged with probable malicious intent by a series of virus that forced them to reformat each computer on a daily basis half way through the tournament, without much inconvenience to the players aside from losing Demos and Replays. They managed to save some replays which they will hopefully release soon. They also had a sponsor bail out at the last moment with an equipment commitment which they also resolved. I will not bore you but the list goes on and on and I am surprised these guys managed to pull off the event with only a few replays lost.

They insist that the VikteR issue was beyond their control, and they bare no responsibilities for his actions but having received the complaints they had to investigate it fully before coming to quick conclusions. They apologize for the delay.

I have talked individually to many starcraft participants in the event to find exactly how they felt the organizers had handled the event and there was an overall approval of the event and the organization. In review of the organization's misfortunes and retrospectively, most participants were generally satisfied, especially now that they know that the organization had no intentions of ignoring their complaints and have addressed the issue of VikteR.

I can not help but feel for VikteR, but I suspect that he was not in it for the wins considering his actions but for the fame, something which I think he has now achieved beyond his expectations. The Brazilian Starcraft community's national pride was hurt by his actions and I do not believe they will forgive him anytime soon, but in general they feel vindicated with VSEN's actions.

Here is a quote from Brazil satyricon, VSEN administrator (kindly translated by
Brazil kvs[SOA]) of the official decision taken by VSEN as posted at Hangar.net.

gavel1.gifI come here to this community and to leave my explicit note of repudiation at what occurred during our last WCG in the Starcraft tournament. For who do not know me, I am satyricon, responsible for all VSEN tournaments and consequently Brazil’s WCG 2004 organization.

Concerning the complaints, commentaries and even jokes about the attempt of buying victories by the player VikteR (TiTaN), I want to make it public that these kind attitude and activities will not be tolerated in any way by the organization of the event and will be severely penalized.

In agreement with the depositions of SCBW Judges Brazil Claw, Brazil Pomba and Brazil G.Virus (among many others of the community that collaborated directly or indirectly with this cause), the player VikteR is disqualified from WCG Brazil 2004 due lack of sportmanship and unsporting behaviour. The player will henceforth not be able to participate in any tournament organized by VSEN. Unfortunately this decision has been taken too late (due to lack of concrete facts when at the time when the problem occured), so we are not able to rescue the prize and the bronze medal, but the third place (and the possibility to go to San Francisco) does not belong anymore to this player.
Starcraftgamers is no stranger to tournament organizations and this year we were resposinble for Nordic WCG for three nations so we know exactly what these events involve in time and effort. All in all we can fully understand VSEN's commitment to their event and their community. We wish them better luck next year.
