Blogs \ The 1.16 issue
Lord_of_Chaos @ 22nd December 2008 14:57 (Read 8443 times).
"Finally" I said when Blizzard released their new patch. 1.16! Wohoo! Apart from the necessary bug fixes, it included stuff we had been waiting for for a very long time from Blizzard. Personally I believed more was coming too in a next patch. I mean, why only include some stuff? We got the CPU saver, we got replays with text and we got a /r function. All saving us hassle and improving our gaming experience. Finally Blizzard was following up on what third party programmers had done for years!

There was a small "but", though. It seemed Blizzard had made a small mistake that had passed by unnoticed in their own testing. Games on the new patch were lagging. Most of us just figured that Blizzard would fix it in a week or so. In the meanwhile we could stick to ICCup which was still supporting 1.15, which was not strange considering that they probably don't want to change patch and all mid-season, given the inevitable hassle with a new launcher and all. They also announced officially that they would not change. Given that the next season was around the corner we all believed that Blizzard would have fixed the patch by then and ICCup would transition to 1.16.

"Does anyone get a bit of lag in bnet? Or is that just me.."
- ostojiy, GG.net member

Some time went. Kespa announced that they would continue on 1.15 since 1.16 was too buggy. That makes sense, when playing on that level and that much money involved you don't want bugs. Surely, this would put pressure on Blizzard to put things right. The biggest non-Blizzard body concerning StarCraft would probably get some alarm bells ringing.

And we believed the patch fix would come soon.

Now it's about a month since the patch was released, and here we are. It's become harder to find games on b.net because players don't want to play games with issues and bugs. Kespa still has their back turned to Blizzard's latest patch and ICCup is going strong as ever. And people are getting annoyed, then irritated, then angry, and now pissed.

"random interns doing the patches now huh"
- Carnac, TL.net admin

And our community has been split in two, one part on ICCup and one part on b.net. Our clans are split in two. Our clan leages are split in two. We are split in two.

And still, almost a month after initial release, no patch fix. In this day, with less players than ever, the BW community does not need this. This is a danger to us! I think I speak for everyone when I say "Blizzard wake up!"

If you are interested in the technicalities of why this is happening, read this:

this was quite obviously... why blizzard should help bw community while SC2 is going to be out?
Blizzard is not interested to us.

they are obviously interested in us (otherwise they would not have made this patch), and they are in no way fucking up sc2.

i suggested iccup switch to 1.16 but they freaken close my thread. Since the new 1.16 fixer came out for chaos i dont know why they cant just put that into their launcher. so dumb. close it like 10 minutes after i suggested it. anyways yeah. iccup should just switch to 1.16 to solve this problem

perhaps a bumming is in order?
fucking blizzard. get OFF it.

#5 loc u think that this patch is a proof that blizzard care about bw community?
it seems wrong. they didn't help us.. as u wrote in your article they spitted this community in 2 parts and after a month we are in the same shitty situation, and blizzard seems not apologize about this.

This is just a propaganda ;p - they want to destroy SC so that everyone will be forced to switch to SC2 immediately as it comes out ;D

a starcraft-addict just has to play, as we all know ;)

But seriously, personally I don't find 1.16 laggy during a normal game or sth. The only thing that annoys me are replay problems. Sometimes, when u pause during the game, the rep won't work... And if u try to watch reps with someone on b.net it's damn laggy then ;[

As for the fact that b.net and icc have different patches, I somehow got used to it. It takes a couple of seconds to change the patch.

All in all, they should fix it asap.... but as for now, there's nothing suggesting that they actually will.

Ensuring that the SC1 is obsolete by the time SC2 reaches the market? I don't know, lol. Weird thing is, that the issue could easily be fixed by 2 minutes of coding. Why haven't they done it?

#7 yes i already thought about this and posted on iccup forum, but admins still disappointing to use 1.16.0.

Maybe it's done for puropse ? SC community is decreasing - yes, but still, it's quite big. Soon we will have SC2, and it will surely sell better if SC would have die.
For 10 years it's been fun and competitive game, and this state can last yet very long, and SC2 developers don't want that for sure...

I just dont understand where this lag is? i havent experienced it yet. Unless you guys are talking about the screens before u are in game such as sitting in channel and clicking create or join, it glitches a bit but adjusts after a second. IS that that problem everybody is complaining about? I havent felt any lag during gameplay.

#10,#13 I think that all postcommunistic countries have citizens that tends to believe and create CONSIRACY theories... We surely have this aspect in our social life. Yes, world is complicated, so for no-so-smart people it is convenient and somehow easy to have something like this.
NO, Blizzard is not destroying its own game, that is been an ICON. It just misses some testing, which somebody who understands software development could understand. Especially if you maintain 8 years old code. So put your guns back to pockets. There is nobody to shoot.

Anyway. I agree with LoC. They are slow. Too slow, but I guess they are including some gifts for angry community.

#13, we are decreasing, but obviously still the strongest community out there:)

even tho I haven't experienced ANY problems with 1.16.0 yet, I heard alot of ppl do have problems with it, and I think they should just fix it, shouldn't take that long?
or they putting like 100 extra functions into it to at least fix and make it even better.

Only problem I had with 1.16.0 so far is:
if you are in a channel and start a sentences with 'OR', it will msg a person in a channel or on your fl, maybe from who you got a msg the last, or something, idk, but somewhat this happens ..

They are not interested in the hardcore SC community as it seems. You don't offer moldy bread to your kids if you like them.
And what did Blizzard do with the latest patch?

(that's a rhetorical question just in case you don't get it)

Blizzard fucks SC1 up and then starts selling SC2.

But without me... if SC1 remains like this I'm _for sure_ not gonna buy SC2.

Someone should really start some petition with this.

just play ICCUP and some day new patch will come.
with all those banned CD keys and etc problems for the last few months is just annoying to play b.net even on 1.15.3 if u want Lan LAtency and etc which are mandatory @ ICCUP

it's not a grand conspiracy to make people stop playing bw obviously.. they just messed up. The issue is that they are simply too slow to fix their mess up, something that is unacceptable.

#22 your not going to play a brand new completely different game, simply because they messed up 1.16 patch? You do know that all you are doing is looking childish for stating something that even you know is not true. You will try the game just like everyone else, regardless of the threats you try to give.

#25 how can a game be just as good as broodwar the first day it comes out? Did you even play starcraft when it first came out? You realize they had to go through 9 patches of solid balancing before the game was even half of what it is now. You also know that starcraft without broodwar was a really imbalanced game, yet was played massively as well. No game is going to be a damn blockbuster hit the first week on shelves. They are going to have to go through tons of balancing and changes, JUST LIKE BROODWAR had to go through. Nothing is perfect overnight, and it pains me to constantly read these stupid replies.

Blizzard is probably working on the NEW wow expansion (even newer then WotLK), and OMG starcraft doesn't really give them any money cause everybody has it loooooong time ago, and 11 mil wow players pay every month. Imagine you're a businessman. Which one would you choose to work on?

I like starcraft better. Shit, I like starcraft BEST, but I'm just being realistic. Besides, Lord_Of_Chaos, you should send them an e-mail message with this post or something.

And OMG I laughed to hard, on

they probably copying iccup. theyre gonna shut down bnet for a week and be like "why so serious?" then they just have a new interface for bnet. no more rusty metal.

The slash R (/r) function doesnt work as it should either. If you start a sentence with a two letter word starting with any character followed by an r, its works as /r instead of the word, for example, "or" "ur" or whatever will msg to the the last person msg you. Really anoying.

i think its not even easy to program these bugs so good work blizz :S
But seriosly its a shame, that an official patch has way more bugs than any 3rd person programm made by a "nooby programer"(sry but in relation to them you should be) ever had...

#44 Lord_of_Chaos 3 years ago
I don't see why the heck ppl are complaining about sc2 here? sc2 is a great game and completely unrelated to this thread..

#45 Caladan 3 years ago
#29: Blizzard doesn't care about their fan base... okay, they release a patch for a 10 year old game, that's great. But the patch just makes everything worse. They just should do nothing if they can't do it properly.

And if Blizzard continues treating their buyers that way, I will of course not buy SC2. I don't like the game too.
And that's not childish, that's consistent and that's free market.

#34: Then they should stop releasing fucking patches, shouldn't they?
The BW community has done everything for itself since ages (launchers, map editors, anti-hack, fixes like cpu savior, competitive servers ...) and that worked best!
