eSports sucks now. (Updated: 12th June 2008 16:08)
Lately I have been rather upset with the current state of eSports. I follow many games, from wc3 to quake 3/4 to CS.

In all of these games, other than a select few players it seems like noone even cares about eSports.

And its not just the players to be honest.
When I look at the many organizations I work with/for I see a lot of staff members whether it be CEO's or just a forum moderator. That don't give a damn about eSports, where its headed and why it sucks.

It seems now that there is an abundance of money floating around in eSports (sure not everyone can make a living off of it, but a surprising amount of people do; myself included) that the people involved (or starting to get involved) just want money and don't really care about eSports.

I understand this to a certain extent. I mean, when I went through highschool the teachers would ask the kids

"what do you want to do when you grow up?"

To which most kids replied something along the lines of

"who cares; as long as it makes me a lot of money"

I never understood that, and still don't. Why bother work at something if you don't like it? It makes no sense to me. I pursued a career in eSports for one reason; my passion for it. Sure I have other hobbies, for instance I do aggressive inline and bouldering. But I don't have the same passion for them as I do eSports.

They are 'for fun'. But with eSports its something different. I just love doing it, whether its playing professionally or just other projects.

I understand this sounds like I am pushing my 'beliefs' system on everyone when it comes to eSports and that I am trying to force everyone to feel the same way about it. However I would like to steer clear of that.

I understand that a lot of people play games competitively for the same reason I boulder or skate, its FUN. And so it should be.

These people that play in leagues and go to events simply because its fun and don't necessarily want a career are the people I love in eSports. They make it worth while.

Its the people I meet online or at events that only play to get 'easy money' and just make a quick paycheck doing something they deem as 'not a real job'.

These people, sadly enough, are the people that are now guiding eSports. And in the wrong direction I may add.

My point in all of this is, why are the people that don't even care about eSports the ones leading it? And why are the casual 'fun' players and the 'passion' players left in the dust to deal with it?

Casual players are far to casual to organize eSports , that should answer most of your questions!

It's about organization, performance, records, stats, popularity, EGO, higher, bigger, faster, professionalism, "cash" and ...more!

Anyone that can provide such a platform, will almost always succeed in feeding this demand. ...... it's not casual or really fun to organize such a demand, it's hard work and you've got to meet all "cliché" expectations to succeed.

eSports has many levels and your talking about your personal view and experience of a transition from one level to another!

The naive Vacuum of eSports is being filled rapidly by the more cash being involved!

Think about it like this: If SC pro-gaming "cash" would not have existed in Korea, sites like GG.net or TL.net would have no demand in it's present form.

your seeing the transition right now at TL.net with the TSL..... well it's like 5-8 years too late for SC/BW but you will see that it's only a kinda test run for SC2, there will be no vacuum this time. If SC2 is proven to be a competitive game, everything will be even more extreme involving all things around "cash" & "eSports"

So hop on the wave like everyone, and wait for your 2nd chance "for what ever" in SC2 ....lol

If all that pisses you off, just casually join B.net and play a few games and don't support the hype on websites & cash Tournaments/ladders!

the definition of "eSports" is fully clarified in categories like:

casual = no mention, gamers based, clans, teams
armature = little to no cash, fan sites , seedings invites (Semi-Pro-organized)
pro = cash, sponsors, all media (Pro-organized)

If you think about it "gamers" are the "losers" in the newly formatting organized future "eSports" Media. Millions play & dream, 100 make a true living, the rest wasted most of their time. The only winner's are the leeching organizers!

Thats why there is no such thing as "casual fun eSports"! eSports lives and feeds from hype acceptance given by fans & gamers. The cash only acts as a catalyst!

The shift in the way of presenting eSports is also changing rapidly! It has shifted from "made by gamers for gamers" to "made by professional technicians & organizers for Sponsors". This is the transition SC out side of Korea was lacking for so long!

That has nothing to do with what I said.

I am not angry at organizers. Not in the least. Sure some are bad apples like the CPL and GGL not paying prizes and running less than poor quality events.

No I am upset that most people involved in eSports are in it for money and not the love of the game. This means the players, managers, owners, investors, organizers, media etc.

Its everyone. I am not talking about SC or wc3 here. I am talking eSports as a whole.

I never missed out on your so called "first wave" I am quite sucessful in eSports.

And this isn't about changing teirs so to speak either. eSports grows and grows with every passing day. It never stops. Which way it grows is what is concerning me. Noone seems to do anything for the sake of happiness. Its all about money and it sickens me. I started this because of my love for the game. Whether my views are similar than the next persons, there should always be the common love for eSports/the game; if not then they should get out and stop wasting peoples time and making things difficult for the rest of us when we have to clean up their mess.

Personally I fell into working in the esports world by accident and eventhough I've been photographing esporting events for about 5 months now (with a decent camera) I still do mainly volunteer work. I make sure to share my shots with Korean fancafes (My assistant is an STX fan so she has introduced my work into the Korean communities.) and also I've done volunteer photography for Nexon (Kart Rider events) so for me it's never been about the money - but the chance to experience a side of esports and photography that not alot of people get to. It'll never be about the money for me because I already have a job - esports is my passion, not my employment (although I've been known to bitch about how tiring it is to shoot MSL sometimes ^^;;;)

I do it because I love it; true I do do this for a living. But thats just a bonus. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't love it.
