The Heartland Poker Tour is breaking records at nearly every stop. Last October, its Black Hawk, Colorado stop made headlines for delivering a million-dollar prize pool, and just six months later they were back at the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour breaking that record. In total, 820 players registered for the $1650 buy-in event, making it the largest field in HPT history and the largest ever in the state of Colorado.
Sixty-seven-year-old retiree Steen Ronlov of Westminster, Colorado won his seat to the Main Event in a $360 qualifier. Ronlov parlayed that satellite win into $270,905 when he was the last man standing, or sitting as it were, at the end of the tournament.
As he prepared to take his seat at the final table, Ronlov discussed his strategy with the HPT staff, “I’m going to have fun, I’m going to do what I do, I’m going to be me. You have to learn to enjoy it; otherwise it’s a miserable game.”
Other notable players in the massive field included Joe Sebok, Gavin Smith, Darvin Moon, and Allen “Chainsaw” Kessler, all of which were eliminated on Day 1. Several past HPT champions were also on hand including Kyle Simpson, Dash Dudley, Jeremy Dresch, Craig Casino, Andreas Ramadanis, William Givens and Matt Mason. Dresch, a three-time HPT champion, had the deepest run of the group, finishing 41st.
