The challenger team is in red hot form on its way to a potential APEX championship.

Going all the way back to October 2016 when they were called simply The Meta, Meta Athena are yet to lose a best-of-five, playing in South Korea’s premier Overwatch league. Led by outstanding Ana player Jong-Seok “Nus” Kim and featuring star Zarya main Jae-Hoon “Hoon” Choi, Meta Athena are on the verge of completing their royal road and winning the league on their first attempt, provided they can keep their win-streak going.

Meta Athena exited the group stage as the top seed ahead of reigning champions EnVyUs and pocketed another victory in the round of eight today against nV’s runner-up from Season 1: Afreeca Blue. The silver medalists and their frontrunner Genji expert Weon-Hyeop “Arhan” Jeong took only one map thanks to a sneaky backdoor capture on Ilios before losing the next three games in a row.

Meta Athena once again showcased their defining innovative playstyle, using Mei to attack through the narrow house paths for a blistering capture on Eichenwalde A which equalized the score. Dedicated hitscan DPS Jeong-Woo “Sayaplayer” Ha dived into sniper antics on Anubis and Dorado to enable the zoning playstyle Meta Athena have grown to love, and teamed up with Hye-Sung “Libero” Kim’s Hanzo for a double-sniper composition to close the series at 3-1 on the streets of Mexico for that outstanding 20-match win-streak.

Meta Athena’s biggest challenge might be ahead of them, however, as  they are slated to play KongDoo Panthera, who defeated IEM Gyeonggi champions LW Blue in the second match of the day. Panthera entered the series with an even more impressive record of a 21-game win-streak over six consecutive clean sweeps between APEX and Nexus Cups.

Panthera struggled in the opening two games against LW Blue but recovered remarkably from game three and on, winning first Hanamura and then Dorado and Eichenwalde to complete a reverse-sweep against LW. As Panthera readies to play Meta Athena for the semi-finals berth, LW Blue are down to the losers bracket, their tournament life clinging on a win against Afreeca Blue.

Friday, March 17, is when Group B of the quarter finals will resume.
