Recap of the World Cup Group Stage and a look ahead at the Playoffs

The final 8 countries prepare to give everything they got to claim the title of the first Overwatch World Cup!

With the end of the Group Stage of the Overwatch World Cup, we get to know our final 8 nations that will compete for the ultimate prize: champions of the 1st global Overwatch World Cup. On the 4th of November the playoffs will kick off at BlizzCon. Both Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be played on that day. On November 5th, we will be witness of the Grand Finals.

A quick recap of the final day of the Group Stage.

Staring with the series SwedenSpain in Group A. Sweden promised themselves they would take the pole position in Group A without any problems. They clearly forgot about Spain’s quality as a team. After Sweden won the first map quite easily, Spain made a huge comeback and blew Sweden away on at the Temple of Anubis. The third map was even more disastrous for Sweden. Their lack of control and teamplay was one of too many mistakes, which Spain happily took as an opportunity to take the series and the pole position. MVP of the match: bromas on McCree. We all know IDDQD is a god on McCree, but this time the roles changed and bromas was able to tip, even to outplay every single player on the Swedish team.

Next up in Group A was Brazil versus Canada. Both of them wouldn’t make it to the playoffs, but they showed games of high skill. Canada took the series without dropping a game, which made Brazil win no games at all in the Group Stage.

In Group B we had the clash of the big nations: USA versus Russia. Both teams showed plays of extreme high skill, but only one is ought to be victorious. That was Russia. After a draw on Hanamura, both teams seemed to be equally matches against each other. Route 66 was on its way to another draw, when on overtime USA forgot to pay attention to the payload and so Russia took the win. Third map goes to USA after highly contested games. But on the final map, Nepal, we saw Russia at its best. Shadowburn aka “Shadowcarry” sliced through USA and managed to get his team to win the series as well as Group B.

Also in Group B Germany and Chile battled for their nation’s honour. Germany was able to take down Chile quite easily, which leaves Chile at the bottom of Group B without winning a single game.

Then we head to Group C, where Finland was unable to take a game against the superior South Korea. South Korea made few mistakes, while Finland was just unable to stop them and lost their consistency of a team.

In that same group, we saw the Australian Overwatch team take the series versus Taiwan. A bit unexpected, but they were able to show what they are worth.

In Group D, a lot happened. France was able to do the unexpected, defeat the undefeated China. Closing the series with a 1 to 2 for France, China could not tip their European adversaries. But in the same group, Thailand managed to take down Singapore with a clean brush. Which eventually resulted in China, France and Thailand all having 6 points. Tiebreaker Time it is. There only China was able to defeat both France and Thailand, but France won their best-of-one versus Thailand. Thailand out, China and France remain in the cup.

The Group Stage is over and our final 8 teams are known: Spain, Sweden, Russia, USA, South Korea, Finland, China and France. We are heading into the final stage of the Overwatch World Cup, ending at BlizzCon. All teams have given the best of themselves, but have to give even more to reach the Grand Finals. Expect mind-blowing plays, astonishing eliminations and maybe even Sombra!
