Alienware Monthly Melee - Recap

Alienware Monthly Melee returned this week with a pretty stacked group of teams. Missed what happened? Don’t worry, we've got you covered.

After the first day of the Alienware Monthly Melee, the bottom four teams were placed in the lower bracket. The top teams, WEUNITED, Fnatic, EnvyUs and Cloud9 were placed in the upper bracket. Both Envy and C9 beat their opponents 3-1, and therefore faced each other in the next round. And, to be honest, who doesn’t love this set up? They have met a few times by now, and are still the number one and number two ranked in the world. In that match up, Envy was of course favored, and did own up to that. They took a quick win on Numbani, as well as a solid 3-0 in rounds on Lijiang Tower. They finished the series off with an (almost) equally fast win on Hollywood and advanced to the finals.

In the meantime, Selfless (who advanced after Luminosity withdrew) faced Fnatic, but did not manage to upset and lost 2-0. WEUNITED, a team that seems to be playing better and better by the day, took a 2-0 victory against the pretty unknown team ohno and went on to face Fnatic. But that’s where the fun ends for Europe based WEUNITED. Fnatic, which recently acquired nubris, showed why they are a strong name in the Overwatch scene and beat WEUNITED 3-0. WEUNITED did however, play decently on Lijiang Tower.

Then it was time for the second to last game for the night, Cloud9 faced off Fnatic for the last spot in the finals. For the first game, they went to Hollywood where Fnatic almost manage to hold the last point. C9 then capped, but with a very slow time, allowing Fnatic to take that map. After that they went for three pretty close rounds on Lijiang Tower where eventually C9 managed to tip the scale and come out victorious. Then C9 showed why they are ranked second in the world, and came back strong on the last map, winning the series with 3-1 in total.

So, then it was time for EnvyUs and Cloud9 to face off again, this time in the grand finals. At this point, Envy was up to 48 on their win streak, pretty intimidating. Add to that the fact that C9 earlier in the evening lost to the same team and got pushed down to the loser’s bracket. But C9 fought back well. Winners’ bracket advantage gave EnvyUs one game up even before the games started. But C9 made a really strong showing on Ilios, and had a pretty close game on Numbani. Other than that, Envy looked as strong as always, not letting C9 touch the point on the first round on Nepal for example. So with that 3-1 victory, we congratulate EnvyUs once again, and hope for even closer games in the future!

One of the reasons Cloud9 did well on Ilios.
