Beyond the Summit heads into Overwatch

Time for the next big name to get into Overwatch! This time in the form of a tournament, thanks to Beyond the Summit.

If you are familiar to the esports scene, you might’ve heard about Beyond the Summit. The American company has had their hand in some of the most epic events in Dota 2 history, if not even Esports history. Now they have decided to take the plunge into Overwatch, and have invited the best teams from North America to compete. There will be a series of three cups, where the two first ones are eight teams fighting in a double elimination bracket. After that, the top two teams from each will go on to the final cup. And the prize? $9999, as well as the usual bragging rights.

The rules are pretty straight forward. All maps are allowed, the games are best of 3 (except for the winners/losers bracket finals, which will be best of 5) and there will be a 1 hero limit. The invited teams for BTS’s first Overwatch cup are not unknown names if you are somewhat familiar with Overwatch esports. How about EnvyUs (world ranked 1), Cloud9 (world ranked 2) and fan favorite Luminosity? Sure, let’s hit you with some more names: Splyce (who are still waiting to show the world what they can do), Team Liquid, Code7, 1Shot and last but absolutely not least; Northern Gaming Red.

Here's what the bracket looks like after day one:

The first cup started July 9th and featured some really entertaining Overwatch. Favorites EnvyUs took pretty solid wins against 1Shot and NG Red, and are now on a 32 games win streak. Cloud 9’s first game of the day was against Code7, where they took a 2-1 victory and moved on in the upper bracket. Later on C9 continued to look strong on the King of the Hill maps, even knocking down Luminosity, which will now continue on in the loser’s bracket.

So what to look forward to on day two? For starters, we’re looking at a battle between the two best ranked teams in the world. Can EnvyUs continue on their win streak or will Cloud 9 be the ones that stops it? Then there’s also some pretty solid games in the losers bracket. Code7 that barely lost to C9 is taking on NG Red, and Luminosity is probably hungry to show everyone what they are capable of, and will try to do so against Team Liquid. Later on there will of course be finals in both the losers bracket and the winners bracket, so lots of high quality (hopefully) competitive Overwatch to look forward to.
