Flash Wolves Upsets SKT Again

MSI's group stage is finally coming to a close.  SKT secured first place but also gave up their first defeat of the tournament.

G2 needed a successful evening if they wanted to carry on at MSI and it started well enough with Trick getting first blood in a bot lane gank.  But Condi answered back immediately in the mid lane and the game was even until WE dove the bot turret and picked up three kills plus the turret itself.  Now the Chinese were properly in the lead and continued to snowball.  They grabbed themselves a baron off the back of Perkz’ death and the game was over just minutes later.

Gigabyte Marines continued to trade wins with TSM, despite taking a brief early lead thanks to a successful late jungle invade.  TSM were hammering their opponents bot lane, however, and after grabbing a couple of kills they took down the first turret and grew their team a 1500 gold lead.  Gigabyte Marines rallied and grabbed some kills in an extended skirmish but were unable to convert the kills into objectives.  Then, when Hauntzer managed to extend a 1v2 long enough for his team to arrive, TSM grabbed a baron and the win.

Flash Wolves have been underwhelming so far this tournament but if anybody was going to stop SKT’s unbeaten run it was bound to be them.  They grabbed first blood early on but it was equalised almost immediately by SKT’s bot lane.  Wolf and Bang crushed their lane but the Wolves played around the rest of the map to get a kill on Faker and first tower gold.  SKT maintained a lead for some time but after FW grabbed three kills in the the bottom lane they got two more turrets and finally turned the tables.  Flash wolves got two kills around the baron and then secured the buff itself.  They maintained a lead and picked up the next baron almost on-spawn.  From there it was a simple task to push mid lane and end the game  Tellingly, SKT had only two kills in the entire game and their superstar jungler, Peanut, was involved in neither of them.

G2 continued to struggle and this time it was the Gigabyte Marines who were able to capitalise.  The European team started well in lane and even grabbed first blood on their way to a 2,000 gold lead.  But Gigabyte won the first real skirmish and got the first turret, followed soon by another.  The snowball continued and and a couple of pick-kills gave them room to pick up a baron.  G2 fought back, however, even taking the gold lead briefly, but they overstayed in their opponent's’ base and paid the ultimate price, ending the day on a 3-5 record.

Before the final game, people were discussing the potential backlash from SKT’s earlier defeat.  In fact, the game started slowly with TSM narrowly ahead thanks to better last-hitting.  Huni finally got the ball rolling with a solo kill onto Hauntzer and then Wildturtle got caught out around the dragon pit.  SKT took the lead and ran with it.  Peanut, in particular, was back on form: after securing the baron, he ended the game 8/0/7.

World Elite finally managed to put some space between themselves and the rest of the pack in the final game of the night.  An impressive win over Flash Wolves put them in second place with five wins and three losses.  SKT secured first place but everything else is still to play for.  The team outside the top two all go into the final day of group games on a 3-5 record.
