G2 Esports Can't Break the Curse Despite a Much Better Showing

As most League of Legends fans know G2 Esports has gotten a lot of criticism for their showings at international events. Last year’s World Championship saw them go 1-5 in group play and be the first team eliminated. At last season’s Mid Season Invitational they had another poor showing going 2-8. Not a great track record and it seemed that we were in for more of the same after their first game on stage. Here is ex League of Legends caster MonteCristo’s thoughts on G2’s statements about that MSI in case anyone isn’t familiar with that particular event.

After losing to the Flash Wolves and heading to an elimination series G2 finally showed  why they are the best team in Europe. They were determined to not be sent home early in another international competition. Their match was a best of three against Kongdoo Monster in which they won 2-1 keeping their tournament hopes alive. This was their first win against a Korean team at an international event. To be fair, Kongdoo Monster is currently the 9th place team in the LCK standings.

Their next opponent was fellow European LCS team Unicorns of Love. G2 looked even more impressive in this series winning it 2-0. They had finally stepped up and performed like the European powerhouse they were supposed to be.

This had officially become their best finish no matter what at an international tournament. Now they moved on to play another Korean team in the ROX Tigers. The ROX Tigers have a completely new lineup and are not the same team they were in the past. G2 did manage to win this series 2-1. They had now their wins from zero to two against Korean teams.

They had now made a final of an international event. A huge step up from last season. However, this is where the run stopped. They ran into a hot Flash Wolves team and were quickly defeated 2-0. Despite how strong they looked at this event they couldn’t quite get over the hump and take home the trophy. Despite the loss G2 looked much better at this event than in tournaments past and this finish is hopefully a look at what the future could hold for the team.
