IEM Katowice 2017: Day 2 recap

Unicorns of Love vs. Flash Wolves

Professional LoL matches usually have low kill counts, but I guess nobody told the Flash Wolves or Unicorns of Love that. Every game they played had more than 30 kills, as neither team was prepared to back down from objectives. However, in the end it was the Flash Wolves' superior macro play that allowed them to grab early leads and pressure down the Unicorns of Love in two entertaining games.

Karsa has long been known as one of the best junglers in the world, and boy did he show it in this series with a 10/2/4 Graves performance in game 2. Meanwhile, Exileh played the role of hero for the Unicorns of Love in game 2 on Katarina, but ultimately couldn't do enough for his team once the Nexus turrets fell.

M19 vs. Hong Kong Esports

M19 put up an excellent fight, all things considered, but ultimately weren't a match for Hong Kong Esports' superior teamfighting and decision-making. HKE gave M19chances to come back in game 1, but game 2 quickly snowballed out of control and left them unable to find an opening.

If there's anything to be taken away from this series, it's that Gear can't be allowed to play Syndra. An 18/5/7 KDA and an insane backline flank in game 2 demonstrates just how deadly he can be on the Dark Sovereign, and his play was crucial to HKE's success. M19 meanwhile needed to rely on PVPStejos's early pressure, but he looked surprisingly out of sorts, posting a 3/7/4 KDA on Lee Sin in game 2 and somehow missing a Baron steal. There's always next year.

G2 Esports vs. Kongdoo Monster

Fans of G2 Esports, take heart - your team has finally acquired their first major international tournament win. Against the Kongdoo Monster, G2 finally demonstrated their ability to play a slow and controlling game, leveraging small advantages into larger gains. Though they fell to Kongdoo in game 2 thanks to some amazing LeBlanc play by Edge, G2 were able to close out the series in game 3 thanks to a key Baron call.

It seems like Perkz is always the one to rise to the challenge for G2, and today was no exception. His Corki and Jayce were lights-out in the midlane, and he grabbed a miracle kill onto Guger in the midlane during game 3 to give G2 the confidence they needed to end the game. Of course, he had plenty of help from Trick - G2's jungler had a pair of mean Graves games in the series, ending with an impressive final KDA of 9/1/9 on the Outlaw
