OPL Spring Split 2016: Week One Recap

?A quick rundown of all the action that happened in OPL Week One.

We’ve seen some interesting action throughout three days of OPL where top teams of Oceania met, some with somewhat fresh rosters and some with their former. If you want to know more about a few picked games, read on.

Following trends doesn’t work for everyone

Hellions eSports Club was the first team in OPL to bring South Korean players to their rosters. In fact, they decided to take on three foreign players. We all know how respected South Korea and LCK is and how skilled those players are. What decided on the loss of Hellions in their games against Avant Garde?

Some might say that it is language barrier and, perhaps, playstyle barrier that made Hellions lose their game in an ugly style. While the first game lasted 50 minutes and looked somewhat balanced for a bit, Avant Garde gained a clear advantage after a while, especially with Mitchell “Destiny” Shaw completely dominating enemy team as Lucian. There was no stopping him and he ended the first game with just two deaths.

The second game was a distaster for Hellions. It ended in under 30 minutes with completely no kills for them. In all honesty, they got demolished and weren’t able to do a single thing. Avant Garde had great map and objective control, constantly stopping their opponents from advancing any further.

They want all of it for themselves

Many couldn’t wait for The Chiefs eSports Club to play. They were the best team in Oceania last year and finished 2015 Oceanic Pro League Split 1 with an almost perfect score of 13:1, but decided to go even further, thus going 14:0 in 2015 Oceanic Pro League Split 2. Sadly, they weren’t able to qualify for Worlds, but it is certain that’s what they aim for this year and will surely give their best.

This time was no different. Chiefs finished both games against Trident eSports in a quick manner. Complete domination that Chiefs shown was intimidating enough to stop Trident from making any reasonable plays whatsoever. There was no stopping for Chiefs, who decided to play like a wrecking train of pain, going forward at all cost. Turns out it was well worth for them.

Chiefs Jungler, Samuel “Spookz” Broadley, was probably having a time of his life. He played exceptionally good and secured both victories with his great map control and overall assistance.

Perfect addition to the roster

Before this Split, former Dire Wolves’ AD Carry, Calvin “K1ng” Truong left his team. He later joined Legacy eSports and entertained us with his incredible performance this week. With Ezreal pick in both games, K1ng has shown some great plays and mechanical skills with good scores and led his team to victory in both games against Sin Gaming.

“K1ng” was performing very well last Split in Dire Wolves, but not that good as he did last week. Was his former team holding him back or is it just himself that changed the way he plays?

Conclusion

There’s still a lot to come, but the most interesting question is probably as follows - will The Chiefs eSports Club again be able to rise to the top and dominate the whole scene, or will we see someone stopping them on their way to glory? We still have many weeks ahead of us to know that!
Make sure to follow OPL and its amazing plays, starting with Week Two on Monday, 6PM AEDT!
