Edward Gaming ride Deft's pentakill, win LPL Spring 2015

After a commanding regular season and strong playoffs performance, Edward Gaming were crowned champions of the LPL last night, taking a 3-2 win over LGD.

Close to $130,000 will be banked by the EDG roster following their triumph in the LPL finals last night. And what a final that was.

Edward Gaming were matched against LGD, the team that absolutely destroyed the quarter and semi final opposition. Channeling the power of South Korean imports Acorn and Imp, LGD were undefeated in the playoffs so far, eliminating 2014 WC bronze medalists OMG and regular season runner-ups Snake with 3-0 both. It was an unlikely scenario for LGD, who finished the group stage as sixth after having unconvincing regular season.

At the same time, EDG’s start to the playoffs almost ended in round one elimination, as IEM Katowice runner-ups World Elite – and statistically the weakest team in the top 8 – brought their series to five games before EDG could squeeze out a victory. Revitalized by the return of their midlaner PawN, EDG then completely stomped iG in the semis, heading for their third LPL grand finals in a row.

The concluding showdown was nothing short of epic, as the teams went game for game, pushing the series to full five sets. By the 35th minute of the final game, EDG were already 8K gold and three towers in the lead but nothing was decided yet, until the two rosters met for a brawl at the baron pit.  Then, Deft happened.

The penta kill of the Korean secured the match and the championship for Edward Gaming. This is team’s third gold medal since they’re part of the LPL. This is also their first grand final that doesn’t end at the third game after the clear sweeps of iG in Spring 2014 and OMG in Summer of 2014.
