MYM fire their LoL manager following #BigSorry incident, get fined €5,000

Following the incident between their midlaner Marcin "Kori" Wolski and manager Sebastian "Falli" Rotterdam, Meet Your Makers moved on to fire the latter for his behavior but also got fined €5,000 for "failing to protect players from [Rotterdam's actions]".

Broken by TheDailyDot earlier this week, the latest scandal in professional League of Legends takes place in the MYM house. It started with the departure of MYM's midlaner Kori days before LCS' start and his later return to the roster. In their official statement on the case, MYM's management spoke about fining Kori for his behavior and breach of contract and for a few days that was it.

On February 8th, however, a recorded phone call was made public by esports journalist Richard A. Lewis. Caught on tape was Sebastian "Falli" Rotterdam, the LoL team manager of MYM, threatening Kori that should he refuse to return and play as his contract stipulated, his mother could lose her house, her being the person who signed the contract for her son.

With the community in uproar, MYM and Rotterdam in particular were in the worst of lights. Rotterdam's attempt to issue an apology also failed miserably as it ended with the simple "Big Sorry", a phrase which quickly became the namesake of the entire fiasco.

Three days later, MYM's management came with a statement that Rotterdam has been ousted from the organization, apologizing and saying how "sometimes, [they] trust in the wrong people and [they're] guilty of doing that ore than [they'd] like. Further promises about one on one sessions between MYM, their players and a neutral third party were also made, the objective being identifying potential issues and understanding how to improve upon the situation in the team.

Meet Your Makers won't be getting away with just an apology and a fired manager, however, as last night Riot Games' investigation sentenced the team to pay a €5,000 fine. In defense of what many would consider a light punishment, Riot's Jason "jasonoliver" Yeh said:

We know this fine may not satisfy those hoping for a harsher punishment for MYM, but there’s some important context as to how we reached this amount. In deciding the severity of the fine we took several factors into account. Primarily, we considered the fact that Rotterdam’s actions - and MYM’s failure to protect players from them - created an unprofessional work environment for the team. We also took into account the fact that MYM acted decisively to remove Rotterdam from the organization once the full facts of his behavior had come to light. Lastly, although it in no way justifies threats or intimidation, we also considered when deciding on a punishment the fact that Wolski appeared to break a commitment to a team, which put not only his career but those of his teammates in jeopardy.

Meet Your Makers' troubles do not end with management, however, as the team is struggling to survive in the LCS Spring Split. MYM are currently in the last place with 1-6 after their loss to Fnatic last night and are playing #3 team Unicorns of Love tonight. If the team doesn't engineer some sort of comeback in the standings and stay in last place, they will be relegated down to Challenger League at the end of the split.
