Riot introduces the Team Builder

Answering a lot of the community's requests to incorporate a role-selection tool into League of Legends, Riot announced today a new feature;  the Team Builder. Combining elements of WoW's instance matchmaking system and DotA's Captain Mode, the Team Builder lets the players choose their role or champion before the champion select pops.

It is common knowledge that when two or more players want to play the same role in a game, be it ranked or normal, all sorts of miscommunication occur. It is a phenomenon that often results in players flaming each other, going AFK, or even intentionally feeding the other team out of spite. Thus, this new feature is likely a step in the right path. Additionally, players who want to experiment on different strategies, e.g. double jungler, will be able to customize their setup according to their preferences, having the Team Builder search for teammates who share the same plan. It is a way of avoiding the demands of the current (one top, one mid, two bottom and a jungler) meta.

Furthermore, a new matchmaking dynamic will be implemented as the player's current MMR will not be the only criteria taken into account. The Team Builder will also check how much experience a player has with the selected role or champion and assign him to a fitting team.

The new feature is coming shortly to the PBE server, but will not be integrated right away into normal or ranked queues. Instead, the Team Builder will, for now, be an entirely new queue on its own.
