Star Series VIII top 4 decided; Fnatic barely made it through

After a full month and half of five to six games a day, StarLadder Star Series VIII finally has its final four who will be competing in the offline playoffs on January 17-19. Alliance, Natus Vincere, Sigma International and Fnatic will be flying to Kiev, Ukraine on the appointed date for the LAN event.

Of the eighteen competing teams to begin the season, two teams namely aSpera and 4 Friends + Chrillee disbanded and dropped out of the tournament. Super Strong Dinosaurs, while disbanded, continued to play in Star Series VIII with a wide array of stand-in players which raised the question of many professionals and members of the community whether this should be allowed. The matter got apparently worse when SSD, together with their stand-ins from Romania or Speed Gaming nearly made it into the top four after defeating RoX.KIS and a very dissatisfied Artur 'Goblak' Kostenko.

While Alliance, Na`Vi and Sigma International have booked their tickets to Kiev long before the end of the season, a fierce battle was waged between Fnatic, RoX.KIS and Super Strong Dinosaurs to determine the final slot in the tournament. The battle finally boiled down to a few crucial matches, Fnatic versus RoX.KIS and SSD versus RoX.KIS. Prior to the start of the last playday, RoX.KIS had 36 points and will comfortably fly to Kiev assuming Fnatic loses against The Retry. The European boyband did not disappoint their fans as they took a convincing win over the Russians and tied RoX.KIS at 36 points. Despite having the same points, Fnatic qualified for the offline playoffs because they previously defeated RoX.KIS in the round robin stage.
