Though the Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre is a relative baby when compared to more established eSports genres, it's already given the world hundreds of the most memorable professional players in competitive gaming history.

How many of them, though, have managed to reach the upper echelon of competition in not one, but two games?

Among this select group of players is Joakim “Akke” Akterhall, a well-rounded player who was considered to be one of the best DotA support players in the world before making the jump to Heroes of Newerth, where he enjoys a similar top billing as a member of ONLINE-KINGDOM.

This week, It's Gosu had a chance to pick the brain of the MOBA legends, discussing his career in both DotA and HoN, getting his thoughts on DotA 2, and more.

Following your break for eSports, you rolled back in fierce as ever a year and a half later, cracking into Heroes of Newerth and returning to the top of you game in short order. Why was S2's MOBA offering the game of choice for your return, as opposed to going back to your roots in DotA?

I started to play the HoN-beta with some IRL-friends and liked it more and more. I actually tried to play some DotA after that because Loda asked me if I wanted to play in the national team, though I couldn’t go back to DotA after playing HoN since I was too used to the new HoN-engine. I could only only play one game of DotA before I wanted to go back to HoN again! [Laughs]

As with any genre, there is a constant debate raging between the relative strengths and weaknesses of the current crop of MOBA offerings (DotA, DotA 2, League of Legends, and HoN). Having played both DotA and HoN at the professional level, can you take us through and compare and contrast the games you've played professionally, their strengths and weaknesses, and how they all stack up against each other?

I don’t think S2 failed to do anything – they have a great game with a lot of features that DotA never had. The only thing I think S2 could have done different is to do HoN free to play from the beginning. I think they lost a huge amount of players to LoL just because that game was for free and HoN wasn’t.

S2 Games is largely in direct competition with Riot’s masterpiece, League of Legends. The game has not received very much positive feedback from the DotA and hardcore MOBA community, but, over time, has nonetheless gained in popularity and user base, due in large part to their innovation. They managed to set themselves apart from DotA, something that Heroes of Newerth has struggled to accomplish. Do you think this is the reason behind HoN falling into a pretty consistent third place in the minds of many MOBA gamers?

Most of the people playing HoN have played DotA before, and there is always this debate about DotA vs HoN going on. I actually don’t really know why everyone is bashing S2, I think they have done a great job, but I believe it could be because people set the standard early that “S2 sucks” and people would follow their standard. I mean, sure, HoN has a lot of elements that are exactely the same as DotA, but that is something they said from the beginning that they wanted to do.
