GosuGamers and SteelSeries present HoN World Cup with $40,000 prize

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 2 years ago

In celebration of the launch of Heroes of Newerth and the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup, SteelSeries and GosuGamers are proud to present the SteelSeries HoN World Cup.

As players of national football teams around the world prepare for the premier competition in their sport, you can prepare for and take part in the premier competition of our very own eSport. The SteelSeries HoN World Cup boasts a whopping $40,000 prize pool, and offers chances to win cold hard cash for top competitive players, casual gamers, replay enthusiasts, and soccer fanatics alike.

No World Cup would be complete without spectacular coverage and commentary. So, in addition to the exciting launch of our HoN section on GosuGamers, we can announce that the one and only Toby "TobiWanKenobi" Dawson will be partnering up with Honcast.com as a guest on the live shoutcasts of the tournament’s most anticipated matches!

Each week Honcast will be taking votes from the GosuGamers community on the most popular match to shoutcast from a selection of that week’s most anticipated matches. Now without further ado, here are the details of the SteelSeries HoN World Cup.

HoN World Cup Format
Qualification
GosuGamers will be holding qualifiers for each of the 5 main regions:

- Southeast Asia Qualifier *
- Eastern European Qualifier
- Western Europe & Africa Qualifier
- North & South America Qualifier
- Asia, Oceania & Mixed Qualifier

* = Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines through Garena

Tournament registration will begin on May 19th and close on June 1st so don’t be late in registering!

Registration for the Southeast Asia Qualifier will be on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 128 teams composed of 5 members each. We will be receiving and distributing Closed Beta keys from Garena to those 128 teams so they can compete in the tournament once registration closes.

A select number of top teams from each qualifier tournament will be admitted to the Group Stage of 64. Each region’s number of qualification slots will depend on the proportion of registered teams that belong to that region and will be determined once registration ends, so help make sure that your region is well-represented to get the maximum amount of qualification slots!

Group stage
The 64 qualified teams will battle it out “World Cup-style” in 16 groups of 4 teams with a Bo1 format, and the top 2 teams of each group will advance to the next phase, the playoffs!

Playoffs
A bracket featuring the remaining 32 teams will give us the thrills, excitement and drama that only elimination playoffs can provide, and through the chaos we will crown the HoN World Cup Champions! The playoffs will be played in a double-elimination tournament bracket. Best of three (Bo3) for all rounds in the Winner Bracket, while the first two rounds of the Loser Bracket will be best of one (Bo1). All the rounds thereafter are best of tree (Bo3). The Grand Final is played best of five (Bo5) with the winning team starts up 1-0.

* = (Choice of Headset, Keyboard, Mouse and Mousepad)

5 SteelSeries Siberia v2 Headsets for each regional qualifiers winners will be handed out.

Some of you will realize that the total prizes outlined above fall just short of $40,000. Don’t worry, you will not be short-changed! In addition to the run-of-the-mill prizes awarded to the tournament’s standout performers, we will be awarding cash prizes to the winners of three fun side competitions!

SteelSeries Mousepad Design Contest
In addition to the upcoming announcement of their HoN-themed product line, SteelSeries will be offering GosuGamers members the chance to immortalize themselves on one of their custom HoN QCK mousepads. Registered members of the GosuGamers community will be able to submit their HoN concept artwork to SteelSeries and one lucky person’s fan art will be chosen! Full contest details will be announced soon on http://www.facebook.com/SteelSeries so become a fan and don’t miss out on this one time rare opportunity!

World Cup Pick'em
We know a lot of you are excited about the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, and there’s nothing more fun than supporting your nation or favorite team by picking it to win it all. Each participating team in the HoN World Cup will be asked to pick the nation that they think will win the 2010 FIFA World Cup this summer upon registration. The teams which correctly pick the World Cup Champions will automatically be entered into a random lottery in which one lucky team will win $1000!

2 additional community contests with prizes will be announced in the next few weeks, so stay tuned to GosuGamers.net for more information on upcoming events!

Tournament rules
A detailed list of the tournament rules and complete registration instructions will be announced in the next few days!

With 64 paying placements and ways for even the spectators and football hooligans to net some prizes, the SteelSeries HoN World Cup is certain to be a fun, memorable, and profitable celebration of the launch of Heroes of Newerth and this summer’s World Cup. So team up with your friends, prepare for the imminent Pandamonium, and follow the event on our new Heroes of Newerth section to find out which teams can bend it like Ophelia!

I don't hate the fact that HoN is 'rising in the competitive scene'...

The truth is that this tournament is pre-rigged anyways.

The winners have already been chosen.

There are sponsored teams like KDE, 5, and LOAD already signed up. They are guaranteed to take first, second, and third. They are paid to play by S2 games.

I hate the fact that the HoN community is a bunch of 15 year olds whose lives revolve around meaningless trash talk.

Drayich was also paid to convert over.

#48 Originally it aint Icefrogs map, originally dota is based on other aos maps, originally its blizzard who owns everything regarding wc3, this is a map cant really patent it.

And then you really dont have a clue, you have NO fucking idea if icefrog didnt gave permission, if he was pissed he would probably say something. He havnt and S2 said that they got his permission, so unless you give me decent proof or a statement from IceFrog that he didnt give it, you can go stick all your conspiracy crap up a certain place.

#51 More conspiracy, no proff, not even the slighest amount of hint this is true. You might as well state that S2 sacrifices babies and uses them as batteries to power their servers.

Its seriously amazing that people cant see this as a development for the gaming community.

Wow, there sure are a lot of emotional and irrational comments in here.

I guess that shows how passionate you guys are (and thats cool). But if you are an eSports advocate (like myself), then you will be as excited as I am that money is being invested into the foreign community.

Also to those who have missed, GG teamed up with SteelSeries to host the tournament and whats wrong with tying GG closer to one of the companies that invest in eSports?

Now lets hope this spill over to SC/SC2 or even DotA. Competition is just healthy in the long run, who wants Monopoly? Let DotA work aggressively to source other sponsors and open their eye to competitive gaming and protect their position.

By the way, if you dont like this game or could care less, then hang out in your favorite section(s), just like I do - Starcraft/Sc2 :)

(For the record, never tried neither DotA or HoN so I guess I consider myself objective and a bit more rational).

S2 stole the entire concept of dota and now they are charging money for something that IS and should always remain FREE OF CHARGE.
#55 HoNSucks 2 years ago
Money is only good if there's a legitimate opportunity to win, which there is not in this tournament.

The tournament is fixed so that S2's paid, sponsored players and their teams will win. That money won't go to legit players, it will go to sponsored players. It's a trick.

90% of all contests nowadays are fixed. The winners are chosen in advance.

There was an email posted on a German DotA forum in which IceFrog answered a question and he said exactly what I wrote. But I won't bother to search for it again now.

At#53, the main difference is that the money for DotA tournaments really comes from Sponsors/other sources. All the price money in HoN comes from S2 itself.

But ye I agree, competition is a good thing.

Paranoid, whiny, angry, racist fanboys? Yup, it's DotA fans alright.

Both games can coexist, just take a chill pill.

@ everyone who cares where the money comes from if it is copied or not. If u like esports it doesnt matter at all.

@ HoNsucks who cares if they have bought the player u speak off which atleat in any sport dont transfer for money i would transfer to any fing game there is if they payed me for it. The competetive scene follows the money as does the world cry more about it. U are even american u should understand this more then anyone.

And seriously if u had 10 new players that have never played HoN and that have never played Dota what do u think they would choose.

Who would choose to play diablo when diablo 2 is out.

Its progress or evolution or whatever u like to call it. Pls everyone thats flames at any game it is just pathetic. Have u not anything better to do.

I dont thats why i flame but this isnt a flame on dota this is a flame on whiners and flamers thats got no life.

Ok if u dont like HoN dont play it. If u dont like dota dont play it. Its as easy as that. If u need to whine about it u are just a loser.

#59, the HoN community still is a part of the DotA community after all. And the last 2 sentences are simply stupid crap.

But I am interested in where you got the info of freeware WC3/TFT, I doubt that:)

@ everyone who cares where the money comes from if it is copied or not. If u like esports it doesnt matter at all.

Basically I agree, but I disagree if we consider sustainability. I have seen too many local clubs (sports) that went for the quick money but lost their basis once that big paycheck wasn't around anymore some time later. And esports is suffering from such "trends" much more than real-life sports already.

@ HoNsucks no wonder more and more people hate USA when people are like u.
#65 HoNSucks 2 years ago
I wasn't aware that the USA was a race...

There's no paranoia since we already know that:

1. Chu` was paid to convert over to HoN by S2
2. Drayich was paid to convert over to HoN by S2
3. Tobi is being paid to convert over to HoN by S2
4. Honcast.com is an official affiliate and is sponsored and paid by S2

And also that [LOAD], [5], and [KDE] are officially sponsored by Honcast and HoN and paid by S2.

What paranoia? These are facts.

@65 and 66 I never said that it was paranoia. I said that it dint matter since people follow the money everywhere.

I never said USA was a race i said that people comes to hate USA becouse of people behaving like u.

And even if my english isnt the best u understand enough to answer me. That comment just means u arnt civiliced enough to have a conversation with without bringing up unnecessary facts that none with some kind of degree would care anything about.

Even it is that wc3/tft going freeware it is not freeware now and since it isnt that comment doesnt matter at all in a discussion about costs of the game.
#77 hideinlight 2 years ago
The so called Dota pros are just afraid. How can you not beat some "noobs" like LOAD in such an easy no skilled game? Should be a walk in the park.

Thought you guys said they failed at a the pro dota scene? PROVE it, join the so called "rigged" tournament and beat them with your 1337 skills. Make sure S2 doesn't "get their prize money back" from their so called "rigged tourny".

Use HoN's total "lack of balance" and win...

I dare you!

or is HoN a bit toooo competitive for you?

@ #65 [DotA] [United States] HoNSucks
You are completely ignorant and your slanderous lies must stop.

I'm the Owner/Founder of Honcast.com (a division of eSport Media) and I started it because I believed in HoN and what it delivers for eSports. It's everything I wished DotA had.

I'm also the Marketing Director for Loaded, and the Manager of the LOAD HoN team. I recruited Chu's team (Formerly Team "We Heart Pigs [WHP] to Check-Six Gaming in which I was a co-owner, we recently became partners with Loaded and merged our Check-Six teams to the organization. Chu, Pig, Yoda, Bkid, Dodo etc were all part of the DXD League crowd that came over to HoN and they have worked very hard and practice over 40 hours a week to play HoN to the level they play. I'm sorry you're misinformed about this team's formation, because it had nothing to do with S2 Games. It was about their passion for HoN, and getting in early on what they believe as well as myself to be the next big title in eSports, and it' already proven to be true.

Tobi is a guest caster for honcast.com and has shoutcasted HoN over 5 months ago for GameStah

HONCAST is partners with S2 for helping them run aspects of their Official Heroes of Newerth Launch Party with iGames, Alienware, and other partners.

Lastly, you're obviously out to prove a vendetta against HoN, and it's truly sad that you don't see the value this has for eSports. It's been a passion of most of us for a long time, and it's great to see it develop into something so great.

That is all.

#80 how can he be incorrect wc3/tft does indeed still cost money if it is to be legit. atleast in europe does the asia community get this for free or are u just using garena with ilegimate copies??
#83 s0v4 2 years ago
Ignorance among the Dota players commenting here is unbelievable. Flaming everything about Hon everywhere, not only here but on almost every gaming site, calling people traitors and noobs when they go to play Hon. Just play your game guys, why are you wasting your time here. I cant just look at the stupidity so here you go as objective as possible

To clear some common misconceptions among the Hon haters up:

Dota isnt free, actually costs more Warcraft battlechest costs 40$

Starcraft 2 Dota will cost 60$ if its ever made,

There is no guarantees that Starcraft 2 Dota will have same mechanics like warcraft 3 dota( the way the armor works, the fog etc),

Ice frog is making an RPG for all we know, and his game will be released in like 2 years,

Even if ice frog is making the new dota game, it could easily end up being an demigod or LOL type of game, since creating the same game for the 3rd time is retarded. Why would he bother creating the same Dota game when there are players making the full Dota port to Hon,

Regarding the Hon graphics; If Icefrog is making the new Dota for the third time what type of graphics will it have? same old Warcraft 3 graphics?

And most important one S2 is not EVIL, S2 is not plotting on how to cheat their players and scam them more.

This is the state of things objectively as possible, not blinded by hate like the most of Dota players commenting here are.

steelseries = counterpart of razer

you must be an idiot to not see what S2 Games is doing here. It's fucking obvious that S2 games provides at least 99,9% of the prizepool, they only took steelseries for the name. (against razer)

I'm not a hon hater I got many friends playing this game, but this is ridiculous, stop acting so clueless - S2 Games is playing dirty here, they want to ruin all efforts of DotA to promote their game as much as possible, this is hipocrisy to the max by them. If they really love DotA, they would be more careful with what they are doing.

DotA is probably the most popular game in the world at the moment, they know exactly how much profit they can do with HoN in the long run, that's why they asians can play the game without paying - otherwise no chance against DotA.
For me, it's totally ok that HoN exists besides DotA, but they should respect the DotA community more, right now they try everything to make DotA look bad!

That's like saying IceFrog is behind the Razer 30k tournament, come on now.

Come on, Razer hasn't paid more than a thousand bucks for DotA even when it was much bigger than it is now.

Steel Series and Gosugamers are making an investment in the future, Razer made an investment in the past. :)

Any site to deny the 3 million and growing HoN players a community tab on their RTS site is shooting themselves in the foot, you can't be upset for MYM and Gosugamers for trying to tap the HoN resources.

#86 EG.GenoZ 2 years ago
^ LOL that is you being a tool right there. Icefrog is not behind it, DotA-League is. Hello? The largest European DotA community? How the fuck do you not know that? They have been running multiple DotA tournaments for years now. Farm4Fame, Pick League?

Icefrog hinting the tournament is no different than any tournament staff doing it through twitter. That would mean that Icefrog is behind ESWC and SMM as well. :O Snap now?

Razer has been a sponsor of many Garena tournament including EEDC, ADC, EDC and their Warcraft 3 DreamCup. Recently sponsoring SC2 Razer tournament. So really I have no idea WTF you are trying to imply with that statement of yours.

It is a good thing if E-sport players get paid, yes.

The problem is that they're being paid in the same way that movie actors are paid - They're not actually being paid for their skills, they're being paid to appear in a movie about their skills.

The contest itself is fixed.

HunteR_ : You accuse me of 'slanderous lies', and then can't even point out one 'slanderous lie'? Not only is that a red herring, it shows that you have subpar writing skills and can't even bother to stick to your own written outline. Fail!

Nobody has a vendetta against HoN. We just want the opportunity for the rest of us to get paid and compete too!

Therefore, since you wanna talk honesty, how about you tell us how much you/S2 are paying Tobi, how much S2 is paying you, how much the LOAD team is getting paid either individually or as a team, and the combined profits of your sponsors and/or the payments of any other parties I may have missed.

Then we'll talk honesty.

Would like to see your sources of information, anyways...

so?

S2 Games is playing dirty here, they want to ruin all efforts of DotA to promote their game as much as possible, this is hipocrisy to the max by them. If they really love DotA, they would be more careful with what they are doing.

One would think they are pointing at your head with a gun to play their game judging this commentary. If you like dota, play it, nobody is asking you not to.

S2 Games wants their game to be more popular than the game they copied? WHAT A SHOCKER OMFG!

For me, it's totally ok that HoN exists besides DotA, but they should respect the DotA community more, right now they try everything to make DotA look bad!

Yeah, S2, what were you thinking making tournaments for your game! You should be ashamed! Respect the dota community and stop doing tournaments (and releasing new patches since we're into this whole "let's ask stupid things" mood).

#91 Chairraider 2 years ago
HunteR_, you are so oblivious to things that happen outside of HoN.

You read IceFrog's Q&A #4? Or his announcement about half a year ago for "DotA-Fans"? I am no Einstein, but I can still tell you that DotA/IceFrog still is the future (I'd bet money on that).

And HoN "had" 3 million open beta accounts, the majority are/were DotA players.

And as we all know, mymym only tabbed into HoN because of the money from S2 and according to the results from that last poll I'd assume the same happened on Gosugamers. Not that I really care, their decision, and as long as they keep doing DotA I don't mind.

???

Our team (Loaded) competes to play for the prize money, just like every other eSport.

What delusional cloud are you sitting on.

You don't have a vendetta against hon? Your name is Honsucks sir.

How much I pay Tobi to cast is none of your business, it's my business.

S2 Games does not pay Loaded, nor Honcast.

That should sum it up for you.

Not that I need to divulge that information because whatever I say you'll just flame it and say more lies.

DotA and HoN can co-exist, I wrote a blog on our website ( http://goloaded.com ) about it.

We have DOTACAST.COM and STARCRAFTCAST.COM we do coverage for multiple games, and work with GosuGamers regularly with DotAcast.

I'm not sure why the HoN hate is here, the community is already trollish enough.
#93 HoNSucks 2 years ago
If S2 does not pay Honcast, why are you listed as an official, paid affiliate on their affiliate list?

How much you pay Tobi is the business of the community and directly relevant. While it is indeed a very bold, forward statement to make, I believe that these things directly affect the HoN community and any future/potential professional players who wish to migrate from DotA to HoN.

Even if the game royally sucks, if there's money to be made, a lot of DotA players will go.

We just want to know what the going rate is. In the end, imagine if you managed to get other DotA'ers in the same vein as Tobi and Drayich. Wouldn't that benefit your goals?

So then, just come forward and let us know what the price is.

Tobi has already casted HoN long before I met him.

The Salary of our casters/staffers is not something I discuss publicly, So sorry, I will not be divulging that information.

We're innovators, with a dream of taking eSports to the next level with high level shoutcasting with a great platform to build on for multiple games.

We're official partners with S2 Games for Heroes of Newerth for helping them run the HoN Launch event which I disclosed earlier in the post before. We believe in S2 Games, and Heroes of Newerth, and it's not my job to teach you how to become partners with Video Game companies and the agreements between us.

Put two and two together, we provide top notch esports shoutcasting coverage for the best RTS titles on the internet, why wouldn't they want us on board! We're hoping to partner with as many eSport organizations and game developers we can to help explode eSports into the awesomesauce it deserves to be.

:)

... The troll comment was obviously directed at you, your name is disrespectful *honsucks and I can't believe I spent this much time arguing with you and your false statements. I've made my case, and I'm done here.

Congrats again GosuGamers on the Tournament, it looks amazing.
