Breaking down EHOME's draft of TI5 CN Qualifiers final

Game 4: The Last game of TI5 China Qualifiers

Draft of the Final Game

The drafting phase

Undying, Drow Ranger and Viper being banned in all three games were also banned in this game. Gyrocopter and Queen-of-Pain - priority picks in all three games - were also picked here. Rubick, Ancient Apparition, Clockwerk and Leshrac were also the most contested. With that said, the beginning of the draft was very common throughout all the games as 10 out of 20 heroes were seen in all previous games.

EHOME set a new path to the drafting phase when they picked Razor as their 3rd pick. Whether it was an underestimation or neglecting towards this hero, CDEC didn’t pick any counter to their hard-carry Razor. Moreover, their last two picks were the heroes that Razor counters heavily. Countering four enemy heroes and being countered by none, Razor is the most epic pick of the draft.

The fourth picks for both teams were supports. EHOME got Witch Doctor which is a good team-fight hero with high anti-bkb damage and CDEC picked Skywrath-Mage which works well with Clockwerk as the ability Mystic Flare can deal massive damage if an enemy is inside the cogs. Skywrath is also an average counter to Queen-of-Pain.

The last pick Invoker by CDEC has to be the worst pick of the draft as it doesn’t counter any enemy hero being the final pick while it is countered by Queen-of-Pain in the laning stage and Razor during the team-fights. CDEC had other choices like Templar Assassin, Dragon Knight and Wind Ranger as they already had good nuke damage and all they needed was a hero that syncs well with Gyrocopter and counters Razor. EHOME had only two choices for their last pick – Axe and Batrider as they needed an Initiator who plays at offlane during the laning stage. So they picked Axe as Batrider was nerfed heavily in 6.84 patch.

Coming to the fourth game, EHOME was up by 2-1 and needed just one victory to win the series. In this game EHOME decided to go for a heavy team-fight strategy while picking counters to the enemy. Each and every pick of EHOME was thought-through and countered the enemies extremely well. It’s very rare to see a draft as excellent as this because it had a good sync with each other hero and it also destroyed the sync of enemy team.

Breaking down major areas

In 6.84 patch high-ground pushing was made easy by reducing the armour of tier 2 and 3 towers and any team with good pushing abilities would get a significant bonus. With this in mind, EHOME drafted Razor who can deal massive damage to towers but which also needs the Aghanim’s Scepter and isn't a good pusher before that point. Queen-of-Pain has good split-pushing abilities while Ancient Apparition has good defensive ability. CDEC didn’t draft for any natural pusher but they had Gyrocopter, Clockwerk and Invoker who can spam skills and make it difficult for the enemy to deal constant damage to towers.

EHOME has a major advantage in terms of execution as they have a great initiator hero Axe and a great team-fight hero Razor. "Tough to play" is the category which gives negative points to the hero that needs precise area or positioning to cast their spells or to the hero who has less margin for error. In the case of CDEC, Invoker, Clockwerk, Skywrath-Mage and Rubick rely heavily on positioning and even their abilities have a small aoe.

Explaining this matter in depth, EHOME has two front-line heroes while sieging or defending towers, Razor and QoP. Axe as a counter initiator or initiator. Whereas CDEC relies only on Gyrocopter as the front-line tanker and Clockwerk as initiator. Razor is a good counter to Clockwerk so he can’t initiate on Razor and QoP can blink out if she gets caught by Clockwerk. EHOME’s supports would naturally position themselves at a safe place and Axe would position himself on the sides to initiate hence Clockwerk doesn’t have a good target to initiate on. If Clock decides to initiate on Axe, he will just turn on BKB and CDEC doesn’t have any option to counter that.

Due to bad initiation opportunity Skywrath Mage + Clockwerk combo also won’t work. Moreover, Rubick doesn’t have any good skills to steal from the enemy to counter initiate. Granted, Invoker can use his skills but if the enemy is spread then his damage output would be quite low. CDEC also made their team-fight worse by not having a good anti-bkb hero. Meanwhile, if we consider that CDEC is pushing for towers and doesn’t need to initiate for a team-fight then also they don’t have a good disengaging potential if Axe initiates on their front-line hero Gyrocopter. With Gyrocopter in danger CDEC has to go all-in and again comes the problem of counter initiating as Clockwerk has no good target to counter upon. EHOME’s supports will always be safe until their three cores in the front-line are alive and CDEC has no quick way of killing them. Which in the end just allows EHOME to cast their spells easily and the Witch Doctor’s ultimate Death Ward would be unstoppable.

Now in spite of having four tough-to-play heroes, CDEC could have an advantage if the enemy drafted more melee heroes but a huge credit goes to EHOME for drafting four ranged ones which can easily maneuver and position themselves to take less damage. In this last category of Range Disadvantage, CDEC has a slight advantage as they also drafted four range heroes and a Clockwerk who has a larger distance of initiation than the enemy Initiator, Axe but overall CDEC is in a big trouble if their front-line hero Gyrocopter doesn’t have the Aegis of Immortality.

Individual Strength determines the output of a single hero without the need of help from allies. EHOME drafted a very well balanced draft that covers up all the categories of Individual Strength whereas CDEC lack a healer which is a great disadvantage to the team pushing against Ancient Apparition. Healers like Dazzle, Witch Doctor and Chen can help in resetting the push. In terms of Durability, EHOME had Axe and Razor who are one of the most durable heroes of the game and can be the front-line tankers whereas CDEC again had a major flaw in their draft as they had no front-line tanker. Gyrocopter needs either a healer or a tanker to help him disengage the fight and reset. CDEC could have also picked Earthshaker to help Gyrocopter disengage from Axe’s Call and Razor’s Static Link.

Escaper is a category which calculates how mobile a hero can be and how difficult it can make for the enemy to kill him. EHOME has QoP as a good escaper and CDEC has Invoker. EHOME has a draft that can disengage a team-fight easily whereas CDEC have to go all-in. In terms of an Initiator, the teams are equal as EHOME has Axe and CDEC has Clockwerk. Fast Farming category is also equal as CDEC has Gyrocopter and EHOME has Axe and QoP. CDEC has only one advantage in Right-click-damage as they have Gyrocopter that can dish out high Right-click-damage to a single target and in an aoe. Overall EHOME has a good advantage in Individual Strength.

Counter picking is the most essential part of a draft which helps in shutting down the enemy heroes completely and reserves a chance to make a comeback if the laning stage goes poorly. The counter picking of CDEC was horrible as they were down by -88%. In spite of Razor being a third pick of EHOME, CDEC picked no direct counter to Razor, which was a tremendous mistake. Whereas the Razor counters Invoker, Clockwerk, Rubick and Skywrath-mage!

Moreover CDEC had only one hero with high Right-click-damage as Gyrocopter and Razor would just use his ability called Static Link and its game over for CDEC. CDEC’s last pick Invoker was the biggest mistake in their draft as it countered no enemy hero while they had the opportunity of picking other good mid heroes like Templar Assassin, Dragon Knight or Wind-Ranger. In the matter of supports of CDEC, Skywrath Mage counters QoP by silencing her and disallowing her to escape for a minimum of 3 seconds but only until she gets a BKB and also counters Axe by frequent nuke damage in the laning phase. Rubick was a second pick and EHOME drafted smartly by not letting Rubick counter any other heroes in their draft ahead. With that said, EHOME had heavily countered CDEC and it would give them a good lead in winning the game.

In a nutshell, EHOME had advantage in Pushing, Individual Strength and Counters. CDEC had a slight advantage in nuking damage and low ultimate cool-down time. EHOME with 59% advantage in the overall calculation of the draft had a mighty advantage in winning the game.
