WSOP Europe Main Event Shatters Record

The decision to move the World Series of Poker Europe tournament series from the cramped environs of London to the sunnier shores of Cannes, France has paid off with new entrant records. Over the weekend's two Day 1 flights of the Main Event a total of 593 paid €10,400 to enter creating a prizepool of €5,692,800. That total easily beat the 362 entrants from the next largest WSOPE Main Event.

Day 1A saw 310 entrants with 170 surviving and Jamie Rosen leading with 142,700. Day 1 B saw 284 players enter and Lari Sihvo finished in the lead with 144,725.

Monday play will continue with a combined Day 2 and 199 players remaining.

Notables advancing to Day 2 include Robert Mizrachi, Tony G, Patrik Antonius, Jonathan Karamalikis, Joe Cassidy, John Racener, Barry Greenstein, McLean Karr, Victor Ramdin, Shannon Shorr, Erik Cajelais and outspoken defending champion James Bord.

Some notables who didn't make it to Day 2 included Michael Mizrachi, Sam El Sayed, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, Steve Billirakis, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier and Matt Giannetti. Mizrachi had reason to be disappointed when he got his aces all in against pocket kings and lost.

The first place prize is a sizable €1.4 million.

World Series of Poker officials are quite pleased with the turnout and decision to relocate to the roomier environs of Casino Barriere.
