Team Zealot wins final Open Division Cup leading into playoffs

As the competition heats up in the Open Division the games become far tighter with teams giving their all for the best seeding going into the playoffs.

On the one side of the semi-finals, Team Zealot faced wp.me. They've played each other three times previously, in the quarterfinals of cups #3, #4, and #5, with all three encounters seeing Team Zealot take the win. Wp.me was out for revenge this time.

While the late game was extremely equal on levels and structures, Team Zealot took a huge team fight at level 20 along with catapults whittling down wp.me's core and giving them the first win. Game two was all Team Zealot and they took their second win convincingly, being three levels ahead at 16 with a boss pushing to the core, all forts remaining and leading in kills 12 to 0.

On the other side of the semi-finals Team MAA faced Leftovers. The series went to 1-1 but Leftovers was forced to forfeit the last game as a player had connection issues, which left Team MAA to advance to the finals.

Two teams that are very familiar with each other, Team MAA and Team Zealot faced off in the finals as they have on three other occasions in the Open Division. Watching these two compete, you can see that they are truly the top talent in the Open Division, and the results back that up as they are first and second place respectively in the standings.

As Team MAA led after game one, Team Zealot became one of the first teams to pick Cassia in a competitive environment. The pick treated them fairly well, until Team MAA reached level 16 much quicker, team wiping them and getting a free punisher. Zealot had a strong fight back up to level 20 with a punisher pushing to the core, but they took the safe route, backing off and playing much more passive. That safety move treated them well as they waited for the perfect moment to take another team fight, exploding on Malfurion and Medivh, leaving them space to take the core and tie the series.

Going into the tiebreaker, Team MAA led in hero kills throughout most of the game, along with capitalizing much more on temple control leading into level 13. As MAA led in the early game, Team Zealot caught up going into level 17 as the competition started getting closer and closer. As MAA took temple in the top lane, Zealot chose to trade it for boss to open up the bottom lane. The end was close as a camp was pushing on Team MAA on bottom and Team Zealot on top. A well positioned team fight from Team Zealot was the final push they needed to take the victory and yet another open division cup win.

While the third place match was not broadcasted, we know that Leftovers defeated wp.me 2-0.

That concludes the European Open Division for the first half of the HGC for 2017! The top 16 teams will now fight in a playoff bracket in two weeks. The remaining top two teams will then move on to The Crucible where they will play the bottom two teams in the current HGC Premier League for their HGC spots.
