eStar wins MGA China Qualifiers

MGA China qualifiers Day 2 wrapped today with eStar beating EDG in the Grand Finals to qualify for the LAN finals.

Day 2 had the same structure as Day 1. An open bracket of five teams played off in a BO3 tournament with the top two teams advancing to the four-team upper bracket. The winner of the upper bracket go against the Day 1 winner for the single LAN spot.

From the open bracket, Brave Heart and Perfect both advanced to the upper bracket with surprising ease. The most notable draft was between Perfect and Brave Heart. Perfect went for the never-seen-before Murky-Abathur combination. Not to be one up’d, Brave Heart countered with Gazlowe. At this stage both teams had secured their spot in the Upper Bracket, so this was a fun lineup, not a sign of the Chinese Meta.

The Upper Bracket favorite was unquestionably team eStar. The number 2 ranked team in our rankings, eStar had only lost a series against their eventual opponent XTeam in the last few weeks.

In round 1, XTeam played up against Perfect. The series was quite competitive, with a close Game 1 on Haunted Mines but XTeam took it 2-0. eStar similarly took their round 1 match series against Brave Heart 2-0. eStar kept their momentum and won 2-0 versus XTeam.

The China Qualifiers Grand Finals was a surprisingly short affair. eStar finished their day by beating Day 1 winner EDG 2-0, to go a perfect 6-0 in the qualifiers. Certainly this will be one of the teams to watch in the LAN finals; they are unestablished against western teams.

Overall, the Chinese meta is similar to the West. Jaina, Sylvanas were all popular picks throughout the day. There were no particularly different trends, the lack of Johanna and Kael’Thas may have been the most surprising.
