WCG USA Open

[s]event_wcg[/s]

This past weekend the WCG USA Open Invitational Tournament was held in Hollywood, CA. 8 of the best USA players were invited to come and compete for 4 spots in the USA finals, 1,500 USD in prize money and of course, the ever popular bragging rights. 7 of the invited players showed up and many good games were played and much fun was had.

This years WCG USA qualifiers are much different than they ever were before. Instead of forcing the best players in the USA to qualify in either online or offline qualifiers, they decided to offer a quick route for the best players to earn a spot. That quick route is the USA open where the top 8 players in last years USA grand final were invited to play a double elimination tournament. All of the confirmed players came except for Cocoa, who has moved to Panama.

The Players

It was a star studded day in Hollywood - Spider-Man and Elmo were there!

Well, we also had some very well known BW players, including FroZ (3 time winner of WCG USA), Day[9] (Winner of WCG USA 2005), Tasteless[9] (the infamous BW shoutcaster), and of course Nyoken (always well known but even more-so after you read the results section).

Congratulations to Nyoken for beating FroZ in 2 Bo3's in a row to take home the 1,000 USD prize and all those great bragging rights! Despite being knocked into the loser brackets in the first round he percivered and came out on top.

There were many good and interesting games played in this tournament. You can read the SCLegacy summaries by mnm and sMi.NewB by clicking » here. There are mini-interviews there as well so check it out. You can download ALL of the replays » here. There were problems with the computers crashing, along with other organizational problems which Day[9] outlined » in this post on TL.net. The organizers of WCG have read his letter and are taking these things into account for the finals.

What Happens Now?

There will be 2 sessions of online qualifiers for the rest of the USA players to try and get a spot. The first one is for the Pacific/South region and it runs June 19th - June 25th. The second one is for the Northeast/Midwest and it runs from July 10th - July 16th. These tournaments will be held on the Game-On Launcher and run through the WCG-Zone. To learn more about how WCG-Zone works please read » this post. The online qualifiers will yield 4 players from each region who will compete in an offline qualifier (details TBA). The top 2 from each region will then go to the USA finals for a total of 12 players - the 4 from the US Open and the 8 from the offline competitions.

So, if you live in the Pacific/South region then start practicing, because the qualifiers open in about 1 week!

Big thanks to mnm over at SCLegacy for all of her help in taking pictures, collecting replays, and putting together those great player pic's up at the top of the post!
