Team Composition Breakdown: Playing Duck's Safety Zones

Here is the game in case you missed it:

Let’s break down this composition and see what we can learn.

Innate Hero Synergy

At first glance, this team may not look like it has innate hero synergy but there are a few things these heroes naturally do for each other.

Valla ETC Chromie Thrall Rehgar banner.jpg

Control All the Zones

Rehgar with Colossal and Earthgrasp Totem creates a difficult zone to travel through. E.T.C. with Mosh Pit creates an impassable zone. Thrall can drop Earthquake to create another zone that is extremely difficult to move through as well. Chromie can control one Zone with Slowing Sands and one with Chrono Sickness and Andorhal Anomaly empowered Time Traps. This composition should have no difficulty securing turn-ins once they get a few talents under their belts.

The Stand Still and Die Wombo Combo

Slowing Sands and Earthquake almost guarantee a high-value Mosh Pit. While a mosh pit is channeling Valla can spin to her heart’s desire with Strafe dealing massive damage to all of the enemies. Normally Chromie’s skill shots can be difficult to land, but these heroic abilities make it all too easy. Don’t forget, these heroics can be used to engage or disengage depending on what the situation calls for.

The Initiation Duo

E.T.C. has always been one of the best fight initiators in the game. Powerslide is a great initiation tool and can set up for the follow-up crowd control from Thrall. This duo bears the burden of starting team-fights and creates picks. They also threaten snap engages when their cooldowns are off, all and all working pretty well together for this role. If Thrall or E.T.C lands either of their heroics, Chromie can follow up with Slowing Sands and ensure positional advantage.

E.T.C. to Boost Valla’s DPS

E.T.C. has a sometimes overlooked passive called Rockstar. This trait boosts all nearby heroes attack speed by 20% when using an ability. Together, Rockstar helps Valla stack Hatred more quickly while granting her even more damage and movement speed.

Battleground Synergy

On Tomb of the Spider Queen, Ganking Potential, Waveclear, and Turn in Control are the main things you look for in a composition; this team has all three of those.

This Team has Ganking Potential

ganking potential abilities.jpg

Ganking potential consists of mobility, crowd control, and burst damage. E.T.C. has Powerslide to lead the way, Rehgar can use Earthbind Totem to follow up, and Thrall can then lock them down with Feral Spirit. The burst damage of Thrall, Chromie, and Valla can easily delete the crowd controlled targets.

This Team Has Waveclear

When using Valla's Multishot build, her wave clear is top tier. Thrall has pretty solid wave clear for a melee assassin with Chain Lightning and Feral Spirit. Dragon’s Breath is Chromie’s only wave clear ability but it can quickly clear a lane without any risk. Even Rehgar can contribute to wave clear with Lightning Shield.

This Team Has Turn-in Interrupt and Control

Chromie brings all of the shrine interrupts and control you need with her Sand Blast, Dragon’s Breath, Timewalker’s Pursuit, and Slowing Sands. Thrall’s Chain Lightning can help supplement this interruption. Rehgar’s Earthbind Totem can be used to scout turn ins as well, but it is generally not an effective use of the cooldown. With these abilities, E.T.C. and Valla should generally not have to move into striking range to interrupt.

Win Conditions

The win conditions for this composition are:

  • Threaten and win team fights with a solid wombo-combo.

  • Enable Chromies one-shot potential with multiple setups and slows.

  • Control the turn-in areas and prevent the enemy from turning in gems. This team can benefit from huge webweaver pushes.

  • Capitalize on sieging structures with the incredible zoning potential and poke damage of Valla and Chromie.

Here is a prime example of what makes this composition so strong on Tomb of the Spider queen. The combination of Thrall's earthquake and Chromie's Slowing Sands make it very difficult for Dignitas to approach the team fight with any momentum. Malfurion is effectively zoned and Varian is heavily slowed until he dies.
