Team Composition Breakdown: L5's Winning Team

This was the composition that closed out the series and won them the Super League season three title. So let’s take a look at the composition and see what we can learn about it. You can check out this match here.

Innate Hero Synergy

First of all, this composition is full of innate hero synergy. Kerrigan, Muradin, and Tyrael all are dive champions that create engages and picks. One statistic I would like to point out is that in hero league Kerrigan has a 56.8% win rate when paired with Tyrael. Kharazim also fits well with this composition because he is the most mobile healer and is most effective when diving with melees so that he can get his auto attacks off. Li-Ming brings ranged burst, poke, and much needed wave clear to this composition. She is also incredibly mobile and can keep up with the rest of the team when diving. So if I was rating the composition based on hero synergy I would give it an A, but how does this composition suit the map?

Picking According to the Map

Taking the map into consideration is critical to drafting a team composition. This team takes full advantage of Infernal Shrines because of these things:

Wave Clear with AOE

  • Kerrigan with ravage build is a must pick or ban on Infernal Shrines. She gets constant resets on the minions spawned by the shrines keeping her health and mana topped off.

  • Muradin, Tyrael, and Li-Ming all have excellent area of effect abilities for their roles and can clear the shrine minions quickly.
Another important factor on this map is innate health regeneration:

  • Kerrigan with Ravage build has this, Muradin has it with Second Wind, and Kharazim can passively heal allies by Taking Transcendence at level one.

Zoning and zone control is another critical part of team compositions on this map:

  • Tyrael with Sanctification is a great choice because the team fights almost always take place in one stationary location.

  • Kharazim with Seven Sided Strike compliments Sanctification nicely giving a high amount of damage and zoning.

  • Kerrigan creates even more zone control with Maelstrom, and Li-Ming adds to that zoning ability with Disintegrate, Arcane Orb, and Magic Missiles.

Overall I would give L5 an A on picking according to the map. The next question is how do they execute this well-picked composition?

Playing the Composition

This team is a dive heavy composition that is best played aggressively. Playing around stealth and looking for picks is critical. There is a huge surprise factor that forces the enemy team to always be conscious of places they could be hiding. They are extremely mobile and function best when moving forward.

The team also fights extremely well as a five man stationary unit when all the heroic abilities are up.

This is not a great team at burning the Punisher and the lack of ranged damage can make it difficult to defend when behind. Getting ahead with this team is critical because the snowball potential is extremely high.

The best way to win with this comp is by dictating the tempo and picking the fights on your terms.

Win Conditions

This composition has a couple of win conditions:

  • The first is to create picks around objective timings in order to gain the numbers advantage.
  • Kerrigan and Muradin can jump on an unsuspecting hero and set them up for the friendly team to burst quickly.
  • All five heroes have the ability to gap close to follow up on these picks.
  • This composition can surprise the enemy at any time from a bush which also gives them a solid way to come back if they fall behind.

The second win condition is:

  • To stack in a stationary location, pile on the heroics and push the enemy team off the shrine while they burn the minions.
  • These heroes kill minions extremely quickly and by the time the enemy team regroups on the shrine it is already secured.
  • These two win conditions are not that difficult to execute which puts the burden of execution on the enemy team.
