Hearthstone breaks the 70 million players mark, free packs incoming

Blizzard’s card game has hit a new milestone.

The growth of Hearthstone has been steady, according to developer Blizzard Entertainment and an official blog post published yesterday, announcing that the 70 million players mark has been reached.

This marks a 40 percent growth from a year ago. In April 2016, Hearthstone hit 50 million players ahead of Whispers of the Old gods, which in itself was an increase of 10 million compared to the numbers given in the February quarterly report of the same year. Traditionally, those numbers indicate the registered players, but a sizeable percent certainly don’t play Hearthstone religiously, it seems to be getting new attention at a respectable rate, at least.

It remains to be seen how those 70 million will affect the statistics that do matter: Hearthstone’s market share. Although SuperData’s recent reports do not show Hearthstone as a top revenue game for PC or mobile, it has at least managed to stabilize from a downward trend in February, when it hit “its lowest point since releasing on both Android and iOS smartphones.” This will perhaps come clear with the release of the first quarterly report for 2017, expected to come in the first week of May.

Meanwhile, recent trends and reception has been indicating a positive perception of Blizzard’s card game. Journey to Un’Goro has created the most diverse meta Hearthstone has seen in a while—maybe ever—while esports events such as the ongoing Hearthstone global games are regularly watched by tens of thousands during stacked playdays.

Three Un'Goro packs will be given to everyone to celebrate the milestone.
