One qualifier out of four done and the $25,000 tournament already has big names to carry the hype.

The open preliminaries for PGL Tavern Tales Spring are highly sought after. With just 128 slots available per cup, the brackets filled up momentarily. Players of big and lesser renown faced each other last night for the first of four qualifiers to determine the first batch of eight to earn seeds into the $25,000 main event at the end of the month.

2015 player of the year Thijs “ThijsNL” Molendijk headlines the list. The G2 marquee took decisive victories in the opening rounds but faced heavy resistance as he progressed through the list, taking victories in five games against Cipher and Charzuull to qualify for Bucharest. Petar “Gaara” Stevanovich is also a name that Hearthstone fans will recognize. A former Bucharest champion himself, Gaara’s spot into the main event was earned on the back of a 3-1 over Dima “Rdu” Radu.

Where Gaara and Thijs succeeded, other notable competitors failed, including Ekop, Orange, Hawkeye, Greensheep, AKAWonder, Hoej and others.
