Assembly almost had its first repeat champion

Assembly Winter 2015 winner Teun “Vortex” Eielts was stopped in the grand final by Czech player Robert “Synthetic” Vavra and missed his second championship.

As the €3,000 tournament unfolded, the main story to follow was the one of Vexed Gaming’s Vortex. The Dutch had his break-out performance a year ago on the same stage, defeating Filip “Numberguy” Samuelsen to take his first major gold at Assembly Winter 2015. Although he came close to dropping out in the group stages in this year’s edition of the tournament, Vortex ultimately made it to the playoffs and hope was rekindled.

The bracket progressed with Vortex beating Torlk and Blackout in the quarter and semi-final, respectively to make it to his second Assembly grand final. He was soon joined by a familiar face, Synthetic of team Majestic Lions.

The two had already sparred in the group stage where the Czech convincingly defeated Vortex 3-0 in the winners match to win Group B. Arguably the biggest upset of the opening day, Synthetic’s top spot came at the expense of Harald “Powder” Gimre who failed to recover from his opening loss against the would-be finalist and dropped out from the tournament early.

Although he was given a shot at taking revenge, Vortex didn’t go much farther against Synthetic, who needed only five games to be proclaimed the third winner of Assembly. He inherits the throne from Taiwanese player Wei Lin “Tom60229” Chen who took the Summer edition of the even last August.
