TidesofTime breaks Rdu's streak for the WPC championship

Tempo Storm's Drew "TidesofTime" Biessener adds another championship to his shelf, as he beats reigning DreamHack king Radu "Rdu" Dima in the grand finals of WellPlayed Cup.

In parallel to the M-House in France, another big event fought for the attention of Hearthstone fans this weekend. Organized by WellPlayed.org, WPC extended invites to eight players who battled online over three days for a total of $3,000.

Established names from both major regions and several of the big teams attended the event and so WPC boiled down to a war between continents and team brands, each player struggling to claim the $1,500 first place prize at the very end of June.

Up in the winners bracket, it was MYM's newest recruit Rdu who caught all the attention. Eager to shrug off the recent cheating controversy and the aftermath of it following the DreamHack finals, the Romanian played some solid Hearthstone, sending Show, TidesofTime and Darkwonyx to the losers bracket. With his grand final spot secured, Rdu's spot on the top of the GosuRankings seemed secure.

Knowing that a loss there means elimination, the lower bracket players had to play their best to keep their tournament life and lots of big names failed to do so. Kitkatz and ThijsNL were the first eliminated. The arena mayor Trump followed them alongside Tempo Storm leader Reynad who departed after a five-game team-kill series with TidesofTime. The latter continued to fight tooth and nail for a spot in the grand final and was eventually rewarded two five-game series later, one against Sjow and one against Darkwonyx.

This set up a Bo7 revenge match against Rdu and the American was determined to not lose again. Offering the DreamHack champion a taste of his own medicine, opening with a freeze Mage deck very similar to the one Rdu used to 3-0 Amaz in Jönköping. By the fourth game, Rdu had only his Warlock left and although he did manage to put Tides' Mage to rest, he could only keep for so long before losing to a Shaman in game five.
