DreamHack Masters: Malmö 2016 - Day 1 Recap

Brazil Luminosity Gaming vs. China TyLoo - 12:3, 4:4 (16:7)
Winner: Brazil Luminosity Gaming
Map: de_Mirage
MVP: Brazil Fernando "fer" Alvarenga - 25:14
LG start on the T side.

A lop-sided match, understandably so, where Luminosity Gaming were able to fly by the Chinese TyLoo. The Brazilian squad hijacked the driver’s seat, starting on the T side of de_Mirage. TyLoo showed very little resistance as the recent Major winners rushed into bombsites without hesitation, landing on a 12:3 note upon half time.

What ensued was retaliation from the underdogs; however it seemed that Luminosity were set on a victory. The Chinese were able to secure four rounds on top of the previous three; nevertheless LG took it away at 16:7.

Germany Mousesports vs. United States Team Liquid - 7:8, 9:5 (16:13)
Winner: Germany Mousesports
Map: de_Dust2
MVP: Germany Timo "Spiidi" Richter - 24:16
Mouz start on the CT side.

A close match between the two teams. Neither team showed a particularly dominant performance during the first half as round went in favour of both teams pretty much equally. Mouz gain a slight advantage closing the first half out at 8:7 on their CT side.

An acceleration from mouz was seen as they secured the second pistol round of the match, propelling the team to a lead. Round after round the Germans slowly grinded their way closer to the victor’s title. There was a slight hiccup from Mouz as they weren’t able to immediately close out the match, however they made it there in the end, finishing on a 16:13 note.

Ukraine Natus Vincere vs. Sweden GODSENT - 13:2, 3:9 (16:11)

MVP: Ukraine Sergey "starix" Ischuk - 24:12
Na’Vi start on the CT side.

A very dominant start from the CIS representatives. Round after round was secured by the finalists of MLG: Columbus, seemingly crushing the Swedish  advances. By the end of the first half, Na’Vi managed to string together a total of 13 rounds to GODSENT’s 2.

GODSENT were not about to give up. While they were whitewashed on their T side, the opposite was true for the defence. The round deficit did not fluster the team, as they slowly but steadily secured rounds. While this was a valiant effort, Na’Vi ended up sending the Swedes back to god with a 16:11 score.

United States Counter Logic Gaming vs. France G2 Esports - 13:2, 3:0 (16:2)
Winner: United States Counter Logic Gaming
Map: de_Dust2
MVP: United States Tarik "tarik" Celik - 19:8
CLG start on the T side.

CLG dominate right off the bat. On their T side the Americans managed to perpetually destroy the French defence, absolutely whitewashing their opponents. Effective entry frags, game sense and coordination lead to CLG securing a 13:2 lead on G2.

Not much to discuss concerning the second half as CLG took the pistol round, along with the following three rounds, cutting the match short, but sweet, with a 16:2 score for the Americans.

Denmark Astralis vs. Poland Lounge Gaming - 10:5, 6:4 (16:9)
Winner: Denmark Astralis
Map: de_Mirage
MVP: Denmark Finn "karrigan" Andersen - 22:16
Astralis start on the T side.

Expectations for this match were in favour of the Danes and it seemed the lived up to them. The initial half saw a decent performance, where Astralis were able to successfully push into bomb sites and secure rounds one after the other. Mistakes were made by both teams, seemingly less from the Danes, concluding the first half at 10:5 for Astralis.

Lounge Gaming were in a bit of a pickle at this stage as they weren't able to storm sites as successfully as their opponents, and when they did, Astralis found answers through effective retakes and frags. The overall round score was fairly level, but Astralis only needed so many rounds to close out the match. The Danes won 16:11.

Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. Denmark Team Dignitas - 13:2, 3:0 (16:2)
Winner: Denmark Team Dignitas
Map: de_Overpass
MVP: Denmark Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke - 24:13
Dignitas start on the T side.

An unexpectedly lop-sided match. Dignitas set a good pace for themselves going into the match. The Danes were executing bomb sites on their T side like no-ones business, allowing for a significant early lead. An astonishing 13:2 upon the conclusion of the first half.

The Danes land the coup de grâce upon NiP after securing the second pistol round. There was no chance at retaliation as all three rounds were secured and Team Dignitas continue to the upper bracket of their group, having demolished NiP 16:2.

Poland Virtus.Pro vs. Europe FaZe Clan - 10:5, 6:3 (16:8)
Winner: Poland Virtus.Pro
Map: de_Train
MVP: Poland Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski - 27:13
V.P start on the T side.

Virtus.Pro had a good showing on one of their strongest maps. It all started off with a fairly slow start, where both teams seemed to have pretty equal chances at taking away the match, however the Poles had other things in mind. Round after round was taken as we saw the plough turn up, culminating at a 10:5 half time score.

FaZe weren't about to give this game up without a fight. The European mix gave it their best shot, however it was insufficient to secure them the match. Virtus.Pro held the bomb sites, preventing the Ts from getting successful plants, finalising the match at a cool 16:8 in favour of the Poles.

Brazil Tempo Storm vs. France Team EnVyUs - 12:3, 4:11 (16:14)
Winner: Brazil
Map: de_Cobblestone
MVP: Brazil Joao "felps" Vasconcellos - 29-21
TS start on the T side.

An extraordinary showing from Tempo Storm. The Brazilian roster absolutely dominated their T side, exploiting drop zone to their best ability. Round after round went in their favour, destroying the Major Champions title holders, EnVyUs. Relentless aggression and god-like aim secured the Brazilians a 12:3 half time score.

Despite the poor initial performance, EnVyUs were back. At first despondent, the team seemed to have a complete moral shut down. Following this was an incredible show. The Frenchmen managed to string together an incredible amount of rounds, pushing the Brazilians to a 14:14 score after a sizeable deficit. Despite the incredible comeback, the game concluded with an astonishingly close 16:14 in favour of the Brazilians.
