WCG Updates

[s]event_wcg[/s]Three things:

1. WCG poll » “Which 2004 official event would you prefer to participate?” closed this month.
2. I Supect there will be no 1.11b until after WCG unless they make it this week.
3. USA and Canadian registration deadline is near. Participation system is up.

11823 people voted which usually means about 50-100 times that number actually looked at the poll. This would mean between 500,000 and 1 million viewers saw that poll, which is roughly what they had predicted. Out of these 11823, 58% voted for Starcraft:Broodwar. The nearest runner up was Frozen Throne with 14% followed by CS at 10%.

You could say that Blizzard “owns” WCG but you would be wrong.
» International Cyber Marketing Inc does. Around 60 Nations will be represented and this year they will be offering “2 Million” US dollars in prizes. It is obvious this year Samsung has taken the lead as a main sponsor judging by the amount of Samsung publicity in their website and events.

Blizzard, that is now owned by Vivendi, has in the past participated as a sponsor and despite the fact that most participants in previous WCGs have been Blizzard game players, it has remained somewhat on the side lines during previous WCG years. This year apparently they have made a few changes and perhaps will show a greater active participation. Personally I am baffled that they have not been more active in trying to get a piece of the pie.

As United States XG3 from Sclegacy so well put it, the main reason for the rather poorly and hasty made patch in Battle.net was mainly to allow and integrate Blizzard a little more to the WCG. I suspect in WCG 2005 Vivendi will give this event much more attention. After all what better way to market a game than WCG?

On a different page of this story, Blizzard did make a few mistakes with the last patch and now Mac Users cannot use Staredit properly. This sort of patch error usually in the past was corrected within the same week. Why have they not launched 1.11b yet you may ask then? The answer is probably WCG. It would create a minor nuisance if they threw in another patch now. The new launcher to log on the Battle.net for WCG is already out and registrations for Starcraft will soon be over. So I guess until WCG is over we will not have another patch.

Let me also give a reminder to all Americans and Canadians the deadline for WCG registration for the online ladder is coming fast. I think this deadline is May 31st, 2004. They have already the system set up on how to play online.

Instructions on registration and participation can be checked at » WCG

On a final humorous note, who ever is doing the WCG website proof reading would do better to ask Sweden Shlumpen and United Kingdom sailow from the Starcraftgamers Crew for a little help. At the WCG site battle.net is spelt as 'Battl.net' and Broodwar is ‘Brood wari’ and Frozen Throne is ‘Frozen Thronei.’ There are a couple other mistakes.
