Valve to launch test version - no patch update today

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 3 months ago
Valve's Dota 2 development team has decided to create a new version of the game for testing purposes and will therefore not give the game an update this week.

Valve announced that they will split the Dota 2 game in two, into a test version and another version with more stability.

Both versions will still be updated each week, but the test version will be one week ahead in new content and features.

We are working on a new update process that will allow us to build new features while minimizing the risk of destabilizing the game for everyone. To achieve this we are creating a new version of the game specifically for testing purposes. Everyone that has access to Dota 2 will find the new test version in their Steam games library, under the name “Dota 2 Test”. Instead of releasing the new content directly to Dota 2 each week, we will put it on this Test version first, where we’ll be monitoring it for any glaring issues. The week afterwards, we will update Dota 2 with the previous week’s Test version (while also releasing more new content in the Test).

As a result of this, both versions of the game will be getting updated each week. If you want to help test the new content, or just try it out ahead of time, you can play on “Dota 2 Test”. If you are more interested in stability and don’t mind being a week behind on new content and features, then you can keep playing Dota 2 as normal.

Unfortunately, the switch from previous update process to this one has been a little tricky, as we get the back end set up for Test, so there’ll be no update today. We still hope to have an update ready in the next few days.

Did I missunderstood something or haven't they added the DOTA 2 test client just yet?
If they did so far, Im wondering because I don't find it @my library so far..

still it's a pretty nice improvement and I'm looking forward to it! keep on! ;-)

I swear I don't understand this whole thing. What is this for? Why does anyone possibly need a test mode inside the beta? Either this makes absolutely no sense or I am utterly retarded.

I think it's pretty damn clear why they are doing this, for stability reasons, for Tournaments, to ehance the beta testing and focus on the patches' issues, etc.
???
I don't get how you don't get it

You have perfectly described the purpose of the beta itself. It is called beta because all the beta testers should be testing the game and find the bugs and glitches. I don't see why there's need for a test mode within the testing (beta) phase of the game. I'm not saying it is stupid or that I hate it and won't use it, I only think that it is redundant.

This is what I call, a BETACEPTION!

This probably came from that match between Fire and N9 (aL), where the phase shift bug was 'exploited.' This will at least result in stable cws and pro games. Another smart move from valve.

I actually agree with #22 in some ways, but the reason this is implanted is because even tho Dota 2 is in beta there is still tournaments, and for that they need some kind of stability.

This is STUPID to say at least. Why split the somehow low Dota 2 beta playerbase in two? We realize that this is BETA TESTING so a few bugs/errors and so on ar acceptable. Why make another beta of the beta? I cant see any benefit from this.

for thease guys saying here i dont understand why why why beta in beta????
You have to understand that this beta (dota 2 beta , cos i know your understanding is a bit limited ),is different from other beta games. There are already tournaments in this one , for nice money , so its understable they need some stability at least.
I think its a smart move ....

And for you DeeJay
I would understand if you play dota 2 on garena or battlenet at 5 in the morning and there is only 50 people in the room / channel and you have to w8 15-20 minutes for the game. But whenewer i start dota 2 , there is at least 10000 people on steam, so you game is usualy ready in 2 minutes or less.
You would not feel a difference if there is 9000 people less anyway.
So could you for jesus christ tell me , how the low player pool is a problem for you???

I am actually not so sure it is a great idea.. it might split the beta in half with people playing in the test version and people playing in the regular version.

I'm not amused... but I'll play the new versions I guess since I don't care if the BETA has some flaws q_q

Very good decision.Like some already said, there are tournaments and for this you need to have a stable game without bugs etc..So i think they have more possibilities to test out maybe more content every week by putting more heroes into the pool etc without being afraid to lose stability.Where is the prob to understand it?^^Think it could speed up the whole betaphase.

i believe this decision was made for the sake of the competitive scene and the stability of it. In particular, to avoid such situation like bug abuse in previous tournaments, its a great decision cant see why people even bother to complain

It doesn't matter. There won't be enough good people playing the "weekly" and all the bugs are going to make it to the "tournament" version every time.

#37 Dinozavre 3 months ago
#22 Most likely because there are 1000 tournaments already, people forgot it's in beta, so this is just to remind everyone.

when will the dota2 test version will be added to library?

#39 Phntm- 3 months ago
They implemented a beta within a beta because even though it's still in beta there are thousands of dollars worth of tournaments already going around for it and they need to provide a stable beta. Hence the need for a test version first to see possible exploits beforehand so that in tournaments they don't get exploited.

I think that this means one big thing, that the game wont be finished for another several months, making beta inside dota is only for tournaments to be played on stable map... I think (if we are lucky) final dota will be released fourth quarter of 2012...

#42 Bubi 3 months ago
Yes, i think this patch is for the tournaments to have a less experimental mode.
But i still hope the release is the next International Tournament @gamescom or wherever its gonna take place )

If they start the closed beta with a 1mil tournament they sure have something in the oven for the release
