SK-Gaming releases Dota 2 squad: 'Hard to see where Dota 2 is going"

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 3 months ago

SK-Gaming decides to release their Dota 2 team after only two and a half months.
- It is hard to see where Dota 2 is going and it is still in the beta version, so we couldn't find an agreement between both parties," says SK player manager Min-Sik "reis" Ko.

The Danish squad MonkeyBusiness put pen to paper in November 2011 to be SK-Gaming's new Dota 2 team. The miGGel-lead team finished at third place at DreamHack Winter 2011 and at a first place in the first edition of the BenQ Dota 2 Clash.

The team's announcement of the disbandment further reveals that the team agreed on talking about better conditions at the end of January 2012. SK-Gaming management does, in their statement, underline how Dota 2 is still in the beta version and that it is hard to see where the game is going. Min-Sik ends his statement with that he hopes "that they will find a new organization which can fulfill their needs".

Ex-SK carry Martin 'Angel' Olsen comments the split as follows:
It has been a pleasure working with SK, eventho it was only for a short period of time. After new year, we were to sit down and talk about future plans, and in the end we could not come down to an agreement, which lead to this decision. It was the best solution for both parts. I wish SK-gaming best of luck in the future. The team will from now on play under the tag dd. the meaning of it is free by all to guess.

SK-Gaming turned dd.:
Denmark Martin 'AngeL' Olsen
Denmark Sylvester 'Link' Hoelgaard
Denmark Brian 'MaNia' Strandby
Denmark Mikkel 'miGGel' Berg
Denmark Christoffer Borregaard 'Ryze' Winther
Denmark Alexander 'CalculuS' Rathcke

"which can fulfill their needs" likely points to a financial disagreement.

SK is known by giving close to zero fucks about their players unless they are top1 most of the time. This came in no surprise .

SK-Gaming are fools to let them go. Even if they did leave SK, SK-Gaming should've persuade them to stay, as they are in their best form now, with the entrance of ManiA. Hope they will do well under the tag "dd.".

For some reason I saw that coming I don't know why but since SK released an article about loda's comeback to dota 2! So I will go for a wild guess and say SK organization was waiting for their dota 2 team to lose any tournament so they can recruit loda's team :)

SK was underperforming, and I didnt really see this coming but it definately doesn't surprise me either. SK gaming's loss, as the monkey boys really are a good team that shut down alot of other top tier teams, I am sure they will get picked up by xP spsonsor after SK gets loda.

Dropping this team is in no way justified. They were finding some really good form recently, taking wins against teams like EG and AL. They are easily a top 10 team... I was even thinking they might be top 5 if the recent form with the mania pick up had continued.

Having said that, they should never have sponsored a team in the first place if this is their attitude towards competitive Dota 2 and the fact that it is in beta.

Pressure needs to now be put on sponsors to not do this weak ass bullshit where they hastily pick up teams just to drop them a few months later.

Sponsors are stupid picking up teams as fast as possible and then they're expecting to win everything by their team. Sad story.

I hope this will serve as a warning for other teams who might potentially be approached by SK in the future.

I'm looking at you, Loda.

#23 but i doubt that SK would do that to Loda if SK sponsor XP because they had a great history with loda & akke in terms sponsoring before their dota team.

Seems senseless to part their ways, Loda's team is obviously weaker for this moment, SK till this moment was one of the strongest teams in Dota2 for sure, i dont see any opportunity for this organization to hire any stronger squad.
Wtf is going? Feel really sad for "Monkeys", hope they will be able not to lose motivation after this experience.

If SK's argument is: "Hard to see where DotA2 is going" they cannot pick up any DotA2 squad in the next months.

When they will discover that DotA2 is the biggest game of 2012, all the competative teams which compete for the first places will be picked up already.

Why will DotA2 will be the biggest game? Tobi Livestream already had 13000 viewers on a little tournament, not even talking about the other viewers watching different streams. These numbers are still growing.

So with no team to pick up in the future SK already left the DotA2 scene.
I cannot comprehend this bussinesswise /)

^Versuta also had 13000 viewers, so around 30000+ viewers yes, but sadly it was not a "minor event" as you phrase it, it was an event with all the top teams in the Dota2 world invited.

From what I saw of The Defense matches for example, which is a high-reward online tour with topteams, they actually had less viewers than Infs Cup.

So arguing that as the reason dota2 will be huge is pretty invalid. Regardless, it's still sad to see sponsors leaving.

SK didnt drop the team.

They decided to leave SK organization for personal reasons.

SK is such a shady organization, I think they have a severe lack of knowledge of any game outside the FPS-genre. They have failed to pay wages to several players through the years aswell...

#29 I am disagree with you, nowadays Dota2 is one of the weakest cybersport, even they had International unfortunately it doesnt help so much :( . The prize pool of the tournaments are still very small, look at the Defence they are playing it forever just for 6000 for 1st place, the number of viewers are very small 30 000 its nothing compare to LoL and HoN. Sad to say but Dota2 will be always behind LoL, so SK organisation know about it and its all about the business, they dont give a f'''ck about Dota2 cause its not developing and its mistake of tournament organisations not SK.

#35 You my fellow gosugamer must be mad. Dota 2 is still in beta and there are LIMITED people who can play this game. When i mean limited i mean only people with KEYS or INVITES can play. A lot of the heroes, bugs and etc are not implemented or fixed yet. So you are happy to compare a beta game to an already released game that has been around for I don't know how many years. Use that brain of yours, even if you don't want to type properly doesn't mean you shouldn't think properly.
