SC2 beta!
Created 17th February 2010 23:38 (Updated: 17th February 2010 23:40)

So, I'm one of the lucky few who so far have their hands on the beta. I just played a game on the new battle.net, my first ever sc2 game played from home. Never really understood that this day would actually come! This is AMAZING! Trying to collect my thoughts to write something worthwile home.

First, my reaction to seeing the "SC2 BETA LAUNCHED" on the front page wasn't as big as I thought it would be. Most likely because this is bad timing fr me. Just got home from training, tired, really need to sleep. But of course I can't sleep with this. Then it finally sunk in to me: THE MOTHERFUCKING SC2 BETA HAS ARRIVED AND YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT! I logged on to my b.net account and there it was. Manage SC2 beta. I was the first in the entire GG.net crew who got this. Started spamming some people on facebook, the crew forums and of course the public forums. Fucking amazing stuff, this.

So I download it, and it feels like forever. Finally downloaded, I install it. Once installed, I start the game! FINALLY! First off, fix graphic settings. I'm on a laptop, and it's getting like three years old in May, so it's not the best setup. Still, SC2 runs on it. Just had to scale down some graphics. Also checked the "Disable Windows key" box (love that addition, btw!). Then registering myself, took some time til b.net2 accepted my nickname. I first tried with some variations of LordOfChaos (space or _ was not allowed), but it denied all of them for some reason (bug or someone else already took it, I don't know). So I went with Locray, the nick I usually use when playing on ICCup so that I don't represent GG.net when I play (even I lose my temper sometimes). With this set up, I was able to choose what level of player I was, I think they were "Beginner", "Expert" and "Veteran", with Veteran being the toughest saying something like "Extensive experience within competitive RTS games." Picked Veteran. Started my first game.

First, I've played SC2 before on DreamHack. Almost won myself a second betakey there last event in a SC2 tour. Almost. Doesn't matter now. I happened to play vs basicly only Zerg opponents then, always playing Zerg myself. So I'm used to SC2, these are not my first games.

So I start the game. First impression: Bad graphics (since I scaled them down) and still not perfectly smoothrunning, slight slight lag. But I can live with it. My opponent: Zerg. The map: Some four player map.

The game: I opened up 13pool, 12extractor (the new 12pool 11gas), went for queen asap, then speedlings when gas allowed it and then lair for Roaches (since they own in ZvZ!). I basicly just pumped lings after the initial build, got my queen and made a few more drones for better econ (the Queen has this spawn larvae spell, allowing me to basicly double a hatcheries production capabilities. Protip: USE IT!). Then pumping Roaches when lair and Roach Warren was done. Seemed I didn't actually need Lair for Roaches though, I do recall needing it at DreamHack though, so it's probably changed. Well, sitting on a useless Lair it will at least be good for a later mutalisk switch should it be needed. I basicly pump lings, and roaches (also forgot that roaches cost gas, and had taken drones of gas for more minerals, so mostly pumping lings).

I scout him late. About the time I start my lair. I'm still unused to the new buildings and stuff (takes a few games to get used to them, but give them a chance) so I basicly only pick up that he has a pool and some lings. I steal his gas (he has two so it's kinda useless, but I still wanted to do it). His lings kill my proxygas. I send a ling to see if he moves out, which he does. A pretty big ling force. When his lings arrive at my base my lings, having had time to reinforce while he was running to my base, destoyed his. By then I knew I had the game. After 6-8 roaches and a few more lings I attack and own him up. He GGs.

Sorry for this being jumbled and not wellwritten. It's late, I'm tired, and I'm not really thinking that clearly right now. Just excited! GG.net crew will be bringing you more and more updated. Personally I'll try to fix a livestream account during the weekend and stream some of this sweet sweet future to ya'll! Going back to more SC2 and more nonsleep for tonight!

The 1.16 issue
Created 22nd December 2008 14:57 (Updated: 22nd December 2008 16:55)

"Finally" I said when Blizzard released their new patch. 1.16! Wohoo! Apart from the necessary bug fixes, it included stuff we had been waiting for for a very long time from Blizzard. Personally I believed more was coming too in a next patch. I mean, why only include some stuff? We got the CPU saver, we got replays with text and we got a /r function. All saving us hassle and improving our gaming experience. Finally Blizzard was following up on what third party programmers had done for years!

There was a small "but", though. It seemed Blizzard had made a small mistake that had passed by unnoticed in their own testing. Games on the new patch were lagging. Most of us just figured that Blizzard would fix it in a week or so. In the meanwhile we could stick to ICCup which was still supporting 1.15, which was not strange considering that they probably don't want to change patch and all mid-season, given the inevitable hassle with a new launcher and all. They also announced officially that they would not change. Given that the next season was around the corner we all believed that Blizzard would have fixed the patch by then and ICCup would transition to 1.16.

"Does anyone get a bit of lag in bnet? Or is that just me.."
- ostojiy, GG.net member

Some time went. Kespa announced that they would continue on 1.15 since 1.16 was too buggy. That makes sense, when playing on that level and that much money involved you don't want bugs. Surely, this would put pressure on Blizzard to put things right. The biggest non-Blizzard body concerning StarCraft would probably get some alarm bells ringing.

And we believed the patch fix would come soon.

Now it's about a month since the patch was released, and here we are. It's become harder to find games on b.net because players don't want to play games with issues and bugs. Kespa still has their back turned to Blizzard's latest patch and ICCup is going strong as ever. And people are getting annoyed, then irritated, then angry, and now pissed.

"random interns doing the patches now huh"
- Carnac, TL.net admin

And our community has been split in two, one part on ICCup and one part on b.net. Our clans are split in two. Our clan leages are split in two. We are split in two.

And still, almost a month after initial release, no patch fix. In this day, with less players than ever, the BW community does not need this. This is a danger to us! I think I speak for everyone when I say "Blizzard wake up!"

Stealing the gas
Created 2nd June 2007 13:19

Well, I just posted it in the forums, but I wanna save it in my profile too ^^ so I post it here too:

Many players use this, but very many also don't know what this will result in. Stealing your opponent's gas does not set him back, it does not hurt him, but it does force him in to the kind of game you want him to play. If you, that is, know what it forces him to. Since I'm zerg and I simply know the zerg MUs better than the others, I will describe this for zvt, zvp, zvz, tvz and pvz.

ZvT
Generally you can say this forces him to either rush you or fast expand. However, it also depends on what build he has used before.
If he has opened with 8 rax, he will rush you more or less 100% (assuming you started wiht 12hatch at nat) and then continue with a one rax FE. This means that if you manange to take down his bunker rush, he is wide open to a ling counter, since he can't produce marines fast enough to counter your two hatches that are massing lings and also because you killed off some of his rines when you first killed his bunker. Either you can hit him right away (try to take his ramp), but it will most likely fail (but try anyway, just don't lose too many lings), or you can hit him when he tries to expand. Make sure to kill scouting scvs to not give away that you are massing lings. He won't have the rine number or any medics/firebats (as you stole the gas), so you just run him over.
If he opened with a later rax, but didn't go dual rax you can also steal his gas and then just mass speedlings til you get about 18-24 and run him over when he expands.
Third option is him going double rax. Steal his gas then and he will do a normal FE and it will most likely be a solid one. You can try speedlings, but if the map got a ramp it will most likely not be worth it (even if you succeed to take his expo he will just maynard scvs back to his main, retreat up the ramp and lift cc). On maps without ramp you might want to try it though.
Should be noted that if your opponent in some ways pulls of a successful wallin (like those you can make on Longinus) it is not really worth to go lings in any case.

ZvP
Stealing his gas will result in generally the same thing as with terran: he will either rush you or go FE.
If he has opened with FE, he will pretty soon have another gas available, but it will stop him from very fast tech. Instead you can expect a pretty high zealot number (unupgraded) pretty quick. Won't change the game dramatically though.
If he has done a single gate, he wants to do fast tech, so it will be more or less impossible to steal his gas (as he will take it before you anyway), but if you can he'll be stuck with one gate and no tech. Late zealots, late tech. Outmass him and break his ramp. Make sure he doesn't go forge or triple gate. Forge means cannon on ramp and then FE, triple gate means he's gonna mass.
If he has got dual gates, he can also add a forge and go expand, but he will most likely also continue pressure you with zealots all the time. However his tech will be very late and thus he will vulnarable to muttalisks, lurkers or lurker drops. Also mass hydras might work nicely, however you will have to do some cute micro.
If he's got a gateway and a forge already he'll go FE. Hydras will most likely do the trick to take him out here.

ZvZ
This is probably where the most dramatic game change will occur. If he's gone FE he can still normalise the game, but if not he will have to go more or less all-in mass lings, or switch to hydras, or try to expand and then switch to hydras.
Anyway, assuming he did a one base opening (like 12 hatch in base), and you stole his gas, he's in trouble. He will most likely switch to massing lings and try to take you out with them before your spire is up, or just take down the spire and so catch up to you. Due to your fast muttalisks, him making an expansion will be hard, since he will have to spore up on both bases but if he actually manages to get you on the defensive or deal damage with lings, this is the best way for him to go (unless he manages to kill you off with lings completely). From here hydras are pretty likely, but he might also just go for muttalisks, given that he has an extra base.
If he's done pool before hatch he will most likely do FE (if he had not just put down his second hatch in his main already) after pool and then follow the above.
It is of course also likely that he will just kill off the gas, but that will leave him far behind. Killing off the as with his first lings will ruin any possibility of a rush and if he doesn't he will be way behind in tech and forced to rely on mass lings.
If he has gone FE though, especially with hatch before pool, he can just take the gas at his nat and he will be slightly behind, but not enough so that a couple of spores and taking his main gas will fix. But he will be forced to play defensivly.

TvZ
Since almost all zergs do some form of FE vs T, zergs will generally have a second gas pretty early, reducing the effect of the gas stealing. However, the T can be sure the zerg won't do any form of extreme tech but mostly rely on the solid 3 hatch opening, even if he did pool before hatch.
If zerg on the other hand did go a one base build he will be crippled and his evil plans ruined (if he didn't go some form of extreme rush like 6pool). When saying one base opening I don't mean 9pool, and then expand, but more like 12hatch in base. Might be very nice to take zerg's gas if you went random terran (as many zergs will respond with a one base build then if they don't scout you early).
Be aware that stealing his gas might make him more prone to actually attack you with mass lings, so you will want to scout him properly to not risk having yourself run over by the swarm.

PvZ
Basicly the same as TvZ really. Can't come up with any major differences, apart from that stealing his gas in a one base opening won't hurt him THAT much, but will make him either take his nat asap and mass drones (if you for example went FE), or will make him go masslings and try to run you over.

Catching the noobs
Created 9th February 2007 23:46

This is something I posted in the starcraft forum a while ago, but I thought it would be nice to save it in blog form too ^^ and just to repeat it once more for everyone to read it, since I still think it holds importance! Here goes:

How to keep the noobs of today continue playing starcraft and thus enlargen our community?

A very important problem that we will have to answer one day, and the sooner the better. The situation today on bnet is that, for the noob, it is extremely competitive. Even if a noob has a fairly good understanding of the game, it takes LOTS of patience to keep up the fighting spirit until you get good enough to actually win ONE single game. It's perfectly normal that a person new to starcraft lose 20 games in a row. And that is their first bnet experience. And this is still if they play "1v1 LT BIG NOOB" games. Playing vs computers get boring, and face it, it doesn't prepare you for a real game, only gives you a fair understanding of what each unit does. Watching replays is all good too, but eventually you HAVE to get out there and try your wings, and you can't learn to fly from only watching.

I have gotten a fair amount of people interested of starting with starcraft, but almost all of them have given up after a week or so, due to the high level on bnet (compared to other games where public games are often easy to start playing immedeately, stacraft takes lots of practise).

Some others fall for the simplicity of UMS and fastest. These ways of playing often serve as good training grounds for aspiring players, and while some of course stays here, most of them get bored after a while, and then it only remains to leave or play normal melee maps. From here we get some new players. Personally I came this way, I'm an old fastest player.

And then we have the small amount of players who either fell madlessly in love from the beginning, or had the wisdom and patience to see the light in the tunnel and continued on pure stubborness, but these players are the exception, NOT the rule.

So, what are we going to do? I think we can all agree that we want MORE people in to our community. The more the merrier. I suggest these steps:

1. Convince someone to play starcraft. Most gamers have played this starcraft a little before, so they usually know what you're talking about. Offer yourself to train them, show them replays, and the major community sites (one should be enough to start with, don't complicate things).

2. Whenever you face a real noob on bnet, help him out. Don't just go 5pool to get it over with, let him play try his wings, tell him his major mistakes that you think he can improve quite quickly and last, but not least, introduce him to a community site. Just give him the link, as him to write it down so he doesn't forget and tell him to register there. The community sites make people stick with the game.

These two "simple" steps, and we will have a larger community and we can finally stop all this bullshit about our community dying.
