A noob Q about APM
Posted 24 May 2010 - 06:09 PM
My question is a fairly simple one... I have been watching numerous replays of pro-gamers, and I have been looking through them with the BW-chart program to see what they are doing and when.
What I have noticed is that their APM is usually over 300... Now on my games my average is around 70AMP. Whilst I know that that number is purely a measure of the skill level in terms of attention to detail of the player, I am wondering if anyone can give me any specific advice on things i could try in order to work at increasing that in a meaningful manner.. For example... tips on way to force one to switch between micro and macro more effectively? or perhaps setting myself a specific period of time ( a few seconds) before switching from micro to macro.
any tips and suggestions on things i should try would be much appreciated..
Thanks in advance.

I once was SO HAPPY when I had 100apm in a game, now I usually got around 220+, and that even though I never intended on getting a high apm, it just comes with improving, knowing what you are doing is the thing that makes you faster.

At the beginning, it will be really stressful and seem like a lot of effort. But eventually, much of the basic mechanics that you're doing (jump back home, build units, put SCVs on minerals, make depots, check on upgrades, switch back to army, etc.) become more or less second nature, and it frees up brainpower to think about the bigger problems of the game--i.e. "he just went 1gate, so I should think about an early contain"--stuff like that.
Eventually, you will never have time to wait for anything. I remember times where I'd sit there and wait for my minerals to reach 300 so I could make that hatchery. Now, I'm jumping back home, building lings, putting drones on extractors, microing mutas, and scouting. There's always something to do--just tyr to do it all as fast as you can. You'll slowly see improvements. But it takes effort.

Ive been trying to work at increasing my APM against Computer players and trying to do as much as possible....though its a bit problematic as the pc always does the same tactics over and over, which makes trying different things rather annoying....
(most of all the 5:40mins - 12 zealot charge.. sighs)
as it is I usually reserve keys 5-0 for hatcheries and 1-4 for units... I've been focusing on trying to never have spare larvae around even if i just throw away the units.. (just for practice) and i am pretty diligent at setting and moving my way points around to adjust to various circumstances.
also... whats the most effective method to get you drones to harvest at the start? I usually grab them 2 and 2, it feels a bit quicker than sending each manually.. yes/no??
