MVP Black's Reign of Terror comes to an end

There’s a storm brewing in Korea, and it has swept the undefeated champions off their feet. Tempest wins 4-0, ending Black’s 34-game win streak.

In a series that could not have been more convincing, Tempest has secured themselves the SuperLeague Championship and $70,000. If anyone still believed that they did not deserve to win against TNL in the semi-finals, those doubts are now dispelled.

Game 1 – Dragon Shire

Despite an early lead and an even earlier first Dragon Knight (01:30m) for Tempest, this was a very close game overall. It ultimately ended with a Dragon Knight push that took out a keep, then spurring on a risky dive manoeuvre for the core that almost backfired. This 23-minute victory secured Tempest the opening momentum for the series.

Game 2 – Cursed Hollow

The most one-sided game of the series. Tempest winning a team fight for their second tribute was the beginning of the end for MVP. They secured the top Boss, which lead to them cursing MVP and winning an aggressive team fight at the top keep. Taking out the keep gave Tempest a 3 level lead and they won the game before the 10th minute of the match.

Nothing tells the story more accurately at this point than the mid-game stats:

Game 3 – Infernal Shrines

With Falstad as the only damage dealer, Tempest’s stun-focused composition (based around Anub’arak, Muradin and a Seven-Sided-Strike Kharazim) would win engagements by picking off a poorly positioned opponent before the fight really began. MVP Black looked to be posturing for a comeback by securing a punisher at minute 18, but Tempest’s 20 vs 18 level lead meant they could just ignore it and push for the core. At this point, the only way MVP could win the series was with a reverse-sweep.

Game 4 – Tomb of the Spider Queen

Tempest won their first major team fight at 8 minutes with a convincing 4 for 1 trade. By minute 11, they had secured a Boss, leading to the destruction of the top Keep and a 2 level lead. Another dominating battle in minute 14 gave Tempest the opportunity to use their advantage to secure not only the game but the Championship.

As a whole, the series started off too close to call. With Tempest securing the first map, everybody seemed ready for MVP Black to focus and take the rest of the series. However, after being dismantled on Cursed Hollow, the reigning champions looked discouraged. Even after a lengthy mid-game break the performance put out by Black did not have the same quality we were expecting.

Congratulations to Tempest for ending MVP Black’s reign and securing themselves the title of best team in Korea. The next step for them is to live up to their newfound expectations and perform similarly at the Summer Championships. The question on everybody’s mind now is: What’s next for MVP Black? How will this affect the rumours of them leaving the game? In any case, we're excited for the potential rematch in Sweden.
