The eSports community interviewed

Always wanted to know how people involved in eSports get paid? PCWorld interviewed professionals, like eSports commentators, team and event managers, as well as game producers, to ascertain the answer on this and other questions.

Intel Extreme Masters, Major League Gaming, and Global StarCraft 2 League to mention a few are the most prestigious and highest remunerated tournaments in StarCraft 2. But how can organizers distribute thousands and thousands of dollars to players, and even make money themselves?

Marcus 'DJWheat' Graham, eSports commentator and former professional player himself, said that "(t)he money is coming from the sponsors." The players and teams get covered by "companies like Intel, SteelSeries, a lot of PC-based computer peripheral companies." Even clothing and food companies support eSports, e.g. Jinx, Dr Pepper, Old Spice.

It appears as if professional gaming is a big and growing business. It is no secret that more and more people watch streams, or videos every week. That's one of the reasons sponsors and game producers spend money on players, commentators and others.

Tom Cannon, Evolution Championship Series Director, organizing competitions for fighting games, says: "Exposure is exposure. Fighting-game players don't need PCs and components to play their game, but they're watched by an awful lot of gamers who do buy those products."
